Jon and Kate Gosselin, stars of the popular TLC reality series Jon & Kate Plus Eight, will announce on Monday that they will file for divorce, according to Radaronline.com. The website is reporting that a source confirmed that Kate recently met with a divorce lawyer, and the couple had previously decided to separate by mid-July, but is now moving up the timetable. TLC has scheduled a special one-hour edition of the show for Monday; in a teaser spot for that episode, Kate says, "We've made some life-changing decisions." (The parents of eight are contracted for 40 episodes this year.) TLC declined to comment on the matter when contacted by EW.com.

The kids always end up the losers in a case like this. I agree they deserve much better!

I'm sure being exploited on TV didn't help matters much either. Poor kids!

I hope this means their dumb show will get canned at the end of the season.

After seeing what happens when cameras are in your home 24/7, I don't know why any married couple would allow it. History has shown that your relationship is going down the tubes once the cameras roll. And with 8 children, these two had a lot more to lose than the usual. Very sad.

I never really liked Kate from the beginning, she always talked down to Jon. It sure never looked like a 50%-50% partnership to me. :(

I feel so bad for the kids. :( I really really hope that the announcement isn't divorce, but that the two plan to end the series and work out their problems privately, alway from the limelight.

I think two things:

1) If the scrutiny was getting too hot to handle, you cancel the show. They could have done that at any time.

2) As far as their marriage, the damage is done.

I feel so bad for those poor kids. First, they're exploited for "entertainment" and now this. I really hope Jon gets sole custody. He seems to be the more reasonable, level-headed parent. I always got the impression it was Kate who insisted upon the show.

^ I don't think it's good when one parent gets sole custody unless the other parent has been truly abusing the children. Children need BOTH parents in their lives whenever possible.

And especially 8 children - that's tough for any single parent to handle, let alone a father.

They should have gone into the show with a condition on the contract that said should trouble start in the marriage, then they have the right to cancel the contract and show in order to WORK on their marriage. It's hard to say what the contract says, but if it were my world and marriage, I'd tell them they could sue me, but I'm not continuing the show as long as my marriage is crumbling.

After months of speculation, the 10-year marriage of Jon & Kate Plus Eight's stars Kate and Jon Gosselin appears to be coming to an end, a source close to the situation tells PEOPLE.

Documents to initiate a legal split were filed in Pennsylvania Monday afternoon.

Fans who have watched the couple's popular TLC show – or read the voluminous coverage of the Gosselin marriage in the press – will hardly be surprised: The duo had long maintained a tense relationship, with Jon recently telling PEOPLE he wanted a less high-profile life, while Kate appeared to remain committed to their TV career.

TLC puts J&K +8 on hiatus

Jon & Kate Plus 8 will go on hiatus until August following the Gosselins' separation announcement on Monday's episode, TLC said in a statement.

"TLC continues to support the Gosselin family and will work closely with them to determine the best way to continue to tell their story as they navigate through this difficult time," the statement read.

The network said Monday's upcoming episode will be a retrospective clip show on Jon and Kate's 10-year marriage. The next new episode will air Aug. 3.

"During this time the family will take some time off to regroup and then a modified schedule will be in place to support the family's transition," the statement concluded.

TLC ordered 40 episodes for the season — the series' fifth — but only six have aired.

During their separation announcement on Monday's highly anticipated episode, both Jon and Kate said the show will continue. They said their children will remain in the Wernersville, Pa., home while they will alternate living there. "We interview separately, we'll film different things," Jon said. "Me and the kids, her and the kids."

Jon and Kate never used the word "divorce" to describe their plans in the episode, but Kate filed for divorce in a Pennsylvania court hours before the episode aired. On-screen text later in the episode said that legal papers were filed Monday to dissolve the Gosselins' marriage.

In the papers, Kate said her marriage is "irretrievably broken," and that she's willing to "negotiate a fair and reasonable" settlement with Jon, according to the Associated Press.

"Over the course of this weekend, Jon's activities have left me no choice but to file legal procedures in order to protect myself and our children," Kate said in a statement. "While there are reasons why it was appropriate and necessary for me to initiate this proceeding, I do not wish to discuss those reasons at this time, in the hope that all issues will be resolved amicably between Jon and myself. As always, my first priority remains our children."

Jon said in a separate statement on Monday that Kate filed divorce documents and that he is "deeply saddened" to be divorcing.

"This afternoon, Kate filed for divorce. Our kids are still my number one priority. I love them and want to make sure they stay happy, healthy and safe. My job is being the best, most supportive and loving father that I can be to my kids, and not being married to Kate doesn't change that," he said in the statement.

"This will be a difficult transition for all of us, but Kate and I will work out a schedule that enables our kids to have plenty of quality time with both of us at home in Pennsylvania. In terms of my marriage, it's no secret that the past six months or so have been very difficult for Kate and me. We are no different than other couples and parents who are facing a crossroads in their marriage. I am of course deeply saddened that we are divorcing."

Apparently, the episode that aired on Monday got 10.6 million viewers and some of TLC's highest ratings ever, reaching nearly 12 million by the final 15 minutes.

The amazing thing is, the episode airing last week only had 2.92 million viewers. That means over 9 million viewers tuned in to hear Jon and Kate announce the divorce. Those ratings are just astounding to me - the sad thing is, American is only interesting in watching this couple's marriage deteriorate.

I used to love this show but I only watched for the kids. I feel sorry for all 8 because such a life altering incident and it's being made public for all of America to see. It would help a lot if Jon and Kate would learn to put up and shut up and just do what they gotta. That Kate I don't know, seems to me like she pushed him away and now she's playing victim.

Don't anyone get it?!It always been about the money;they could have given a rats :cuss: about their marriage, nor the kids. She's a shrill shew whom always seems to me that she was disinterested in her kids while John thought that he was the next comming of TOM CRUISE.And for anyony thinking that they are going to give up their high profile lifestyle, forget about it!!!
