Mama Thomas: "RAAAAAHH-JAH! Get me a belt!"
Rerun: "Here I got one!"
Mama Thomas: "Oh Good Lord, Rerun! I wanted to spank him, not strangle him!"

Also:

SPANKING:
Phillip Drummond - In the beginning of DS he was for spanking.
The mom from Everybody Hates Chris
Homer Simpson - sometimes
Red Forman - His spanking is more of a "Foot-in-your-@$%!"

And LOL-ing at James Evans! He def. wasn't afraid fo laying it on anyone, especially the one episode where Michael's friend came over and disrepesected James.

James Evans: "You're in my house and I have the right to whup yo' behind!"

Accurate assessment. One exception. I think Ward Cleaver would've been a spanker, but once or twice in a lifetime type, for something really serious. I remember the Beave on a couple of occasions wondering whether he was gonna get, as he said 'clobbered'.

Sometimes I wonder how we can tell the non-spanking parents for sure; while we neither saw them spank their kids on TV nor implied it, they could have done it off camera. How do we know the Cleavers or Huxtables absolutely, 100%, did not spank their kids?

Ward Cleaver said that he didn't spank his kids. I think it had something to do with Ward's own father always taking him out to the woodshed back on the farm.

Even though Beaver always feared of being clobbered, he never was because Ward wasn't a spanking parent. I remember Ward or June mentioning that Ward didn't spank his kids.

I would like to point out, wheather or not Ricky ever spanked his kid, he DID spank Lucy, which I would think would be unacceptable in todays society.

The Lamberts in Step by Step: I think Carol would've been a spanking parent, but not Frank. Either way, I thought they both portrayed good, caring parents.

That kid deserved to be taken to the woodshed by Mama Harper! He was a real BRAT for what he did!

Pearl Bodine, The Beverly Hillbillies -- yes

Bill Davis, Family Affair -- yes (adopted nieces and nephew)

Steve Douglas, My Three Sons -- no (except perhaps early on)

Pearl Bodine, The Beverly Hillbillies -- yes

I don't know about Jed and Pearl, but Granny spanked Jethro all the time, which is comical because he was an adult.

Carla Tortelli, Cheers -- yes

Frasier Crane, Cheers and Frasier -- no

Lilith Sternin Crane, Cheers and Frasier -- no

Alex Reger, Taxi-- probably not

Tony Micelli, Who's the Boss? -- probably not

Chin Ho Kelly, Hawaii Five-O -- ?

Ben Matlock, Matlock-- ?

P.S. -- For me, spankings were routine (usually from my mom when I was a toddler) and not that bad. What was really bad was my dad's belt or an old razor strop that he used on me in later years! YEE-OUCH!!

Definitely non-spanking dads!
Danny Tanner-Full House
Jessie Katsopolis-Full House
Jason Seaver-Growing Pains

Jason Seaver is questionable--while nobody was ever actually sentenced to a spanking that I recall, there was a dialogue between Ben and Mike that went along the lines "Dad's gonna ground you"--"Yeah, well Dad's gonna ground you and spank you." Could've been Mike's wishful thinking of course.

Rochelle: Everybody Hates Chris - she always seems to find ways of beating her kids but ends not really doing that.

Lois: Malcolm in the Middle - She wasn't afraid of doing something torturous to her kids.

Even though Beaver always feared of being clobbered, he never was because Ward wasn't a spanking parent. I remember Ward or June mentioning that Ward didn't spank his kids.

I always think of that episode where Beaver has Wally write at letter to his teacher (as their dad). Wally writes something like, "I beat him, his mother beat him..."

Regarding Roseanne being a "non-spanking" parent, I do recall one time when she gave DJ quite a licking. It was in the "Driver's Seat" episode.
