LOL, I was just about to ask why Growing Pains is listed as returning but isn't. Thanks to those above for pointing out that it really isn't back lol - one airing at 4 in the morning. Why bother?

Do they really need 2 hrs of Degrassi? Put Growing Pains in there at 12PM just like ABC Family in the old days of 2002.

I know. I bet it'll be gone when they become TEENick. Way too old for The N. Viacom had no business acquiring it in the first place....surprised it isn't on TV Land. Actually I think it would be good for them.

TVLand would make tons more sense, because The-N...just doesn't. The core audience of The-N didn't grow up watching it in first-run and miiiight have seen the reruns on Disney in the 90s, but that's it. The Brady Bunch made more sense when it was on The-N because we at least watched that a lot when it was on TBS, kinda like how Saved by the Bell makes sense.

I wonder why they just don't pull out all of those old 90s Nickelodeon shows that people have been wanting them to air for years.

One Sunday airing at 4AM!!! That's all it gets lol. Nobody will probably ever bother tuning to that. I know that I would normally be asleep at such times.

MTV airs it for an hour each weekday morning at 9am central, 10am eastern, etc. I don't know if they're airing all of the episodes because they just started a few weeks or so ago, but they showed the season five finale this morning.

It doesn't air in local syndication on any channel in your area? My CW station's been showing it on weekdays for I think almost three years now, but they only do seasons three, four, and five (which is okay with me because, IMO, those were the show's peak years).

It's definitely all on DVD.

Thanks. you know i never looked into if it's airing in my area, i know my local CW station airs mostly court shows and talk shows in the morning and old sitcoms in the early evening. Most of my other local stations only air talk shows during the day, we very rarely get any sitcoms on our locals anymore. Except a random Will & Grace, Friends or Fraiser now and then.

How many seasons are there btw?

Do i need to watch the original Degrassi to understand what's going on or are they seperate entities?

Your CW might air it on the weekend, so you could check them. My station aired it weekday afternoons at 2:30, then switched to 8am.

There are 8 seasons, with the second half of the 8th season premiering on The N next month. I think there's around 170 or so episodes so far.

No, it's definitely not required that you watch the original series to know what's going on. The main ties between the original series and TNG is that the main character on TNG, Emma, was born on the original series because her mother, Spike, was one of the regular characters. The principal from the original series is also the principal on TNG for the first couple of seasons. One of the teachers, Mr. Simpson, was also one of the teens on the original series, and he ends up marrying Spike. Joey is Mr. Simpson's best friend and he too was also a major character on the original series. Joey's ex Caitlin is another, but she was only around for a season or two of TNG. They all are usually supporting characters, but they do have storylines of their own. Spike and Snake (Mr. Simpson) get married, have a kid, Snake has leukemia, Joey and Caitlin get back together, Snake cheats on Spike with the new principal, etc. But again, they're mainly supporting. About 90% of the main action revolves around the new characters.

Feel free to ask more questions :) I never get tired of talking about this underrated little gem.

there are 8 seasons right? if it's a high school show, what happens when the characters graduate? do we see them in college or does it go right to a new group of high school freshmen? is it a new group of kids like every three seasons?

JT

Well, the show's timeline is pretty normal for the first five seasons. In the beginning, the main focus is on the Class of 2006 (who is in the 8th grade at the time) and the Class of 2007 (who is in the 7th grade). Each season takes place over one school year, so the older kids graduate at the end of season five, like they're supposed to. Things got screwy for season six...they decided to make it so that each season takes place over a semester, so the younger kids graduated at the end of season seven, in 2008. The thing is, they still referred to them on-air as the Class of 2007. Which was weird because Natasha Bedingfield performed at the prom, singing Pocketful of Sunshine, which wasn't released until 2008. So yeah.

Seasons six and seven split the focus on the c/o 2007 in high school and the c/o 2006's freshman year of university, but they introduced a lot of newer, younger characters during those seasons, so for season 8, the main focus is on a bunch of new characters. The c/o 2006 characters pretty much disappeared, and we only followed three of the c/o 2007 characters to college.

Basically, I suggest seasons three, four, and five. That's when all of the best characters are around. The first two seasons are good, but the characters are all so young that the stories aren't terribly mature. Six and seven are okay, too, but the show was all over the place between focusing on the college kids, the c/o 2007, and the younger kids. Eight is okaaaay, but as somehow who watched the show from the very first episode, it's kinda hard to watch all of these random new characters.

Cool thanks for the information! i am so excited to try out this show! I know that i've seen some of the actors on commericals and they all seem very interesting to me!

Isn't there a gay character on the show?

JT
06-26-2009, 02:19 PM
Yes indeed! The show has been quite LGBT-friendly since the very first season. Two of the main characters, Ashley and Toby, are step-siblings because his dad married her mom. It turns out that Ashley's dad left her mom because he came out of the closet and decided to move in with his boyfriend. That's just a one-episode deal, though. We do see them again a few seasons later when the two men get married.

The first major storyline was at the very beginning of season three. Throughout the second season, there was a recurring character named Marco, but he became a regular in season three. A goth girl named Ellie had a crush on him, and so he decided to date her, but he soon revealed to her that he only dated her because he didn't want people to think he was gay. Ellie understood and accepted it and they became best friends, but they continued to pretend to be a couple for a while. Ellie got tired of pretending, though, and they "broke up." Marco's friend Spinner wanted to hook him up with a girl named Hazel, but Marco wasn't feeling it, and he ended up coming out to Spinner. Spinner was the only one who really had issues with it, but he soon came around. All of the rest of his friends were perfectly fine about it, he started to date Paige's older brother Dylan, and he came out to his mother. Marco then found Dylan in bed with another guy and ended it. He met a closeted guy named Tim and convinced him to come out to his parents, but Tim got mad when he realized that Marco wasn't out to his father, which prompted Marco to come out to him in the middle of the school play. Dylan returns and they reconcile and move in together after Marco graduates, but then Dylan chooses to leave Canada to play pro hockey in Switzerland. Marco has some random episodic storylines afterwards, mostly centering around him coping with not having Dylan around anymore. Truly random and lazy writing, IMO...he becomes addicted to online gambling in one episode and thinks about becoming a prostitute in another. After Dylan moves out, he shares an apartment with Paige and Ellie, and when Paige moves out on her own, Ellie and Marco almost flirt with having a relationship...which is just plain ridiculous. Since then, all of those characters have pretty much faded into the background. "Degrassi Goes Hollywood" is a new TV movie premiering in August that is gonna kinda sorta wrap up their storylines for good, I think.

In season four, Paige is forced to work in the concession stand at the movie theater with Alex, a girl that she had never gotten along with. The become friends as they work together, and in season five, they begin to comfort each other. At the party for the premiere of a movie that was filmed at the school, they get very close. Paige goes home with Alex, who has to deal with her alcoholic mother and her abusive boyfriend. They end up going to Paige's house, where Alex kisses Paige. Paige tries to fight her feelings, but they end up kissing again at school, and Alex's ex-boyfriend Jay tells Paige's friend Hazel, and soon, everyone knows. They start a relationship, but it ends rather quickly as they realize that they have different plans for their lives. Paige goes away to college but after having somewhat of a nervous breakdown, she returns to Toronto and starts to rekindle her relationship with ex Spinner. She finds Alex working as a stripper, though, and convinces her to quit, leading to a second round for them. They break up again for basically the same reasons they broke up the first time...different life plans, values, etc. Alex leaves for good and the last we hear of her is that she's living with her aunt. Paige goes on to have a relationship with Griffin, who moves in with she, Ellie, and Marco. Turns out Griffin is HIV positive, so Paige gets tested. I don't think we ever really learn the results of the test, but after a few more episodes dealing with her career in fashion, Paige is written out. She'll be back for the TV movie, though.

The latest storyline deals with one of the new characters introduced in season eight. Riley is the stereotypical jock and star of the Degrassi football team (a football team that we have barely ever heard of until season eight). He also has a very short temper. He becomes friends with Peter Stone, one of the few bridges between the old characters and the new characters, and the two spend lots of time together. One day, while playing a boxing video game at Peter's house (he's 18 and lives on his own), Riley tries to give Peter some tips on how to box, but their faces get a little too close and Riley kisses Peter. Peter has time to think about it and confronts Riley at school and tells him that he'll keep his secret, but Riley only wants to beat him up for even wanting to talk about it. Things cool down, though, and Riley apologizes for being an ass. Later on, Riley starts to date a girl, Anya, and at the same time, he gets back into contact with a guy he once knew that he had mutual feelings for. He also deals with the pressure of being a football star by taking steroids, and gets into a very violent argument with Sav, Anya's ex-boyfriend. He stops using the roids, but still stands at a crossroads regarding his sexuality. I have absolutely no clue what's gonna happen in the future.

Wow this is all fascinating to me! sounds WONDERFUL! i can't wait to start watching them. So it seems from what you describe like i should not get really hooked on any one character because there's a lot of cast turnover? and yet somehow people still LOVE the show? I know Shanea Grimes was on the show right? what character is she? and isn't there a girl name Emma on the show?

Nooo, the cast turnover isn't too bad at all. Most of TNG's original teen cast stuck around for a long time. The thing is, several characters left and came back around the time of seasons five, six, and seven. Sean was gone for all of S5, returned for S6, and made a guest appearance in S7. Ashley only made a guest appearance in S5 but returned full-time for 6 and 7. Craig was a regular from the second season through the sixth, but he's made guest appearances since then. Most of the original TNG cast has been pretty much written out. Terri left after season three, JT was murdered in season six, and the rest were gradually phased out over seasons six and seven. Only Emma, Manny, Liberty, and Spinner remain as "regulars."

The only huge cast overhaul came with season 8. Before that, most "new" characters were introduced in a recurring role (except for Craig, who debuted as a regular in S2, and Peter, who debuted in S5). Hazel recurred in seasons 1 and 2 before becoming a regular in 3, Marco and Ellie recurred in season 2 before becoming regulars in 3, Jay and Alex recurred in 3 and 4 before becoming regulars in 5, and so on. Shenae Grimes played Darcy Edwards, who recurred in 4 and 5 and was a regular in 6 and 7). Of the main S8 cast, Danny and Derek have been around since S4 in a recurring role but became regulars in S7 when they entered their high school years. All of the other current main characters either debuted in S6 or S7, some as recurring and some as regulars. Many of them were actually students at Lakehurst High, which is Degrassi's rival school. JT dated Mia, a Lakehurst student, in season 6, and was murdered by some of her classmates. In S7, Lakehurst is destroyed in a fire and most of its students are transferred to Degrassi, introducing characters Damian (who graduated at the end of S7 and was written out), Jane, Johnny, Lucas, and Sav. The other new characters were introduced as either previously unseen Degrassi students (Holly J, Anya, and Chantay, who recurred since S4) or new students (Riley and Blue). Also, there are new freshmen characters, including Clare (who recurred as Darcy's little sister), Alli, KC, and Connor, and there is also Kelly, who is Emma, Manny, and Liberty's male roommate at college.

There are also tons of recurring characters who never quite make it to regular status, but still have a presence. Rick is Terri's abusive boyfriend who puts her into a coma. When he returns to Degrassi, he's shunned and bullied so much that he brings a gun to school and kills himself after shooting Jimmy. Kendra is Spinner's adoptive sister who dates Toby. Many other recurring characters who don't really have a story but frequently pop up in school scenes and such.

The most visible characters over the series are definitely Emma, Paige, Craig, Manny, and Spinner:

* Emma Nelson was the original focus, like I said, because she was actually born on the old Degrassi series in 1989. She's the main protagonist but gets into all sorts of drama over the years and has a complicated romance with Sean Cameron. She's known as "the cause girl," for standing up for issues that she believes in and lead the charge against Rick's return to Degrassi before befriending him. She had an eating disorder and was also tested for gonorrhea after giving oral sex to Jay in a ravine. After graduating, she goes to Smithdale University with BFFs Manny and Liberty and starts dating Kelly.

* Manny Santos is her best friend and at first, she was only Emma's cute sidekick, but in season 3, she gave herself a makeover and became sorta the school sex symbol. She's very ambitious and doesn't take any crap from anyone. She served as the spoiler in Craig's relationship with Ashley (Craig got her pregnant but she aborted it) as well as Spinner's relationship with Paige, and later dated Alex's ex-boyfriend Jay. She was known as "the school slut" for a long time, especially after a video of her drunk and showing her boobs was spread across campus.

* Paige Michalchuk is the head of the Spirit Squad (which is basically the cheerleading squad, of which Manny, Darcy, and Chantay are members) and one of the break-out characters. She was raped, had a relationship with one of Degrassi's teachers, dated Spinner, dated Alex, set fire to her dorm, among other things.

* Craig Manning was raised by an abusive father and comes to Toronto to live with Joey, his late mother's second husband. He's an aspiring photographer and musician and has relationships with Emma, Ashley, Manny, and Ellie. He's diagnosed bipolar, becomes a crackhead, and spends some time homeless. He eventually gets his life back together and goes on tour.

* Spinner Mason was sort of a bully at first, usually picking on the younger kids. He dated Paige but cheated on her with Manny. He was ostracized from by his friends after it was revealed that he and Jay ultimately caused Rick to shoot Jimmy (it's complicated), and so he joins the Friendship Club, which is basically a campus worship group. He meets Darcy there and dates her, but he finds it hard to completely give up his not-so-Christian lifestyle and they break up. He's still around because he works at the Dot, which is a small cafe/diner just around the corner from the school where everyone hangs out. He also deals with, at one point or another, ADHD, testicular cancer, and being expelled from Degrassi.

I single them out because they easily drive the storyline in the most episodes, but there are several other major, major characters who were on the show for a long time, such as Ashley, Jimmy, JT, Toby, Liberty, Sean, Ellie, Marco, and Hazel.

Yeah, it is. There whole primetime lineup seems to be The Assistants and Degrassi. :rolleyes:Well, that's Viacom for you. Just look at TV Land, MTV, vh1, etc....the only decently-run property they have anymore is Nickelodeon/NAN and maybe Comedy Central, and the ratings show.

Yeah, that sucks about the removal of SBTB and no Growing Pains...but IMO they were probably too "old" (now THAT makes ME feel old!).

Imagine if Saved by the Bell and Growing Pains moved to TV Land? Something like this would be decent for TV Land if that would happen:

6-7PM Cosby Show
7-8PM Growing Pains
8-9PM Saved by the Bell
9-10PM Home Improvement
10-11PM Married...with Children
11PM-12AM Roseanne
12-1AM Saved by the Bell
1-2AM Married...with Children
2-3AM Roseanne
3-4AM Home Improvement

With everything else remaining the same, but Little House gone from weekdays. Sorry to bring up TV Land on The N's thread, lol.

Eww shouldn't FH's contract be expiring soon? Viacom has had the rights since 2003!

Anyways, I don't see it lasting too long. Remember The Brady Bunch? It only lasted a month on the network!
