Friday the 13th sequel talk from the Platinum Dunes team

Brad Fuller and Andrew Form discuss 3-D, better kills and Jason in the snow
Monday, Jun 15, 2009
By Daniel Fienberg

Earlier this year, Jason Voorhees returned with a vengeance. Platinum Dunes' reboot of the "Friday the 13th" franchise slashed its way to a $19 million opening day on Friday, February 13, on its way to a $40-plus million opening weekend.

"You can never expect that to happen," acknowledges producer Brad Fuller. "We can't imagine that we'll ever have an opening like that again. We've love to, but that's one for the record books."

But records are made to be broken and Platinum Dunes is in development on a "Friday the 13th" sequel, with Damian Shannon and Mark Swift working on a script.

Speaking with a select group of reporters on the set of their upcoming remake/reboot of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," Fuller and producing partner Andrew Form sound proud of the achievement on the first "Friday the 13th" film.

"We did love the movie," Fuller says. "It felt like the movie came out at a time where there were a lot of very down horror movies and upsetting horror movies and we had a great date, obviously and the movie, it was a party. You know, we went to theaters. We watched it. It was a party in the theaters. Audiences were screaming at it and loving it. It was one of those fun horror experiences and I think that for audience members who were looking for the same DNA as the original “Friday the 13ths,” they were very satisfied with that and for people who were looking to pick us apart, and there are a couple of those. This will come as a shock to you, but there are. They were disappointed with it. But at the end of the day, I think it's a really fun horror movie and it's not so gristly that it becomes fetishishy and eliminates a good portion of the audience."

That doesn't mean, though, that the producers are without ideas on how to make a sequel top the achievement of the first movie, which delivered roughly two-thirds of its box office gross in that initial weekend, with nearly a third coming on opening night.

"If we're vulnerable on [the first film], it's that people thought our kills weren't clever enough, so whatever we need to do to make those kills seem clever in the second film is what we're going to do," Fuller says. I don't think that turning him into a space-going astronaut would be the direction that we're going to go in... That's a criticism that really goes to my heart, that I feel like I've failed the fans if those kills aren't original or that they're not unique or grisly. You can read the comments and see where the truth is, and you can see as a producer where maybe that kill could've been better or we could've done something more clever here. However we can bring more clever kills to the second one, that's what we're going to do."

So the original was both not gristly enough to be fetishistic, but also potentially not gristly enough. That's a fine line for the prolific Platinum Dunes team to walk. One potential innovation that seems like a no-brainer after the winter success of "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" would be bringing the "Friday the 13th" franchise back into 3-D for a sequel.

"It's certainly been talked about," Fuller says. "The financial ramifications of doing a movie in 3-D on a budget that size, ‘cause it's not like they're going to say to us 'Yeah, well why don't you make a sequel and here's twice as much money,' it doesn't go that way. Our movies are virtually all the exact same budget and I guarantee you if we make that movie i''ll be the same budget as the original. And we'll say 'Hey do you want to do it in 3-D?' and they'll say 'Yeah, let's talk about it' and then when they see that it's six or seven million dollars more they'll probably opt out unless something that we are not expecting happens. I suspect it will not be in 3-D, although we'd love to make a 3-D horror movie. We'd love to do it; they just don't throw that money our way."

Form throws in another complication, adding, "I don't know if we have the time to be ready for it. If it does all happen, it'll happen quickly because the film does need to shoot before the winter does come and ‘cause the date would be summer next year. So, we've talked about how much time to get ready for the 3-D and then how much post time you need which is a lot longer than a non-3-D movie to get it into the theaters and then financially. But I mean from day one when we started talking about the sequel we talked about it being in 3-D."

Indeed, "Friday the 13th Part 2" (or whatever they decide to call it) probably would have to begin production later this year, prompting a question from reporters about the idea of Jason Voorhees in the snow, which Fuller admitted would be something fresh, though he emphasized that he wouldn't want the entire movie to be set in a wintery setting. In fact, Fuller wanted to make it clear that, for now at least, talk about the sequel is merely talk.

"'Friday the 13th Part 2,' we don't have a script, it's not green-lit, and we have no idea what's going to happen," Fuller says. "If it gets green-lit and we're able to mount it in a reasonable amount of time, we would hope the movie would open on August 13, 2010."

Stay turned for more "Friday the 13th" scuttlebutt.

While New Line Cinema has already announced an August 13, 2010 release for Friday the 13th: Part 2 3D, it appears the film has yet to get the go-ahead.

"Still hoping for some good news that will take us back to Crystal Lake," Platinum Dunes producer writes on his Twitter page.

Regal is Ready for Friday the 13th: Part 2 3-D

November 16, 2009

Pimping the "Digital 3D experience," Regal Entertainment has a calendar posted on its official site revealing the array of 3D pictures coming our way.

On there you'll find Piranha 3D, Resident Evil: Afterlife and Friday the 13th: Part 2.

This talk of Voorhees returning to the screen in 3D backs up what we reported in October. Again, however, Platinum Dunes recently stated a script is in the works, but it hasn't received the green light.

Also, if it is going to be in 3D, the next Friday installment will have to have a higher budget than the reboot we saw earlier this year.

Is New Line/Warner Bros. willing to invest in that? If so, and if it gets the green light, Friday the 13th: Part 2 looks to be hitting theaters August 13, 2010.

Fuller Responds to Friday the 13th Part 2 Rumors
Source: Brad Fuller
November 17, 2009

Plenty is being said about Friday the 13th Part 2. None of it true, it appears, well as far as some rumors are concerned.

Over the weekend, a site called Pajiba reported that Jason Voorhees is being killed off in the upcoming Platinum Dunes sequel and that it could be the last Friday the 13th. Even if true, we've seen Voorhees die before only to return again.

Still, rumors ran rampant and Fuller said, via his Twitter account, that it's all bull and "I am working on 'F13 part 2' everyday." And no, contrary to other reports, Richard Wardlow is not directing.

Friday the 13th: Part 2 is anticipated to arrive in theaters on August 13, 2010.

No Surprise, Friday the 13th Part 2 Bumped
Source: Box Office Mojo
December 10, 2009

Platinum Dunes' Brad Fuller has said time and time again Friday the 13th Part 2 is not a greenlit project.

And while the August 13, 2010 release was discussed, there was nothing ever official about it. So, when Box Office Mojo reports that the sequel to Friday the 13th now has a release date of "TBD" (which they have), it shouldn't really come as any surprise.

Although, Voorhees fans - including myself - were hopeful they'd hit that date.

Platinum Dunes isn't a company that rushes their projects along. Look at the first Friday the 13th. It was shot in the first half of '08 and was released in February of this year. If the sequel is greenlit, they might follow the same production model allotting time for test screenings, etc.

Also something to consider? If it is going to be shot in 3D, they'll need more time for that as well.

Its time to clear some things up.
December 21, 2009

Let's talk Friday 13th.

We have busted our ass to get that movie going! The script is great- dare I say, better than the first. Shannon and Swift have outdone themselves.

We are working with New Line to get that movie going.

I had hoped to be able to tell you that we started prepping the movie, but that isn't the case. We are hoping that New Line decides get us started early next year.

Friday the 13th Sequel Dead and Not Happening
Wednesday, April 21, 2010
By: MrDisgusting

On Twitter @Mayroth_Tucker3 asked Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller, "Hows the 'F13' sequel coming along?" to which Fuller replied, "it is dead- not happening."

Bummer news after hearing that New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. were aiming to have the film in theaters for August 13, 2010.

We checked in with Fuller who added, "Right now there is no movement on "Friday 13th: Part 2"." The sequel to the 2009 Friday the 13th remake penned by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift was going to be shot in 3-D and feature the return of Derek Mears as the new Jason Voorhees.

Considering the redo made a whopping $40m in its opening weekend, and with Elm Street looking to open huge next Friday, this comes as a major shocker.

What Are You Missing from Friday the 13th: Part 2?

Everything seemed in place:
A potential release date.
A script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.

So what happened with the sequel to last year's Friday the 13th?

Last week, Platinum Dunes' Brad Fuller dropped the bomb - although it came as no surprise to those following some of the insider rumblings - that Friday the 13th: Part 2 isn't happening.

Multiple sources gave us the dirt pointing much of this decision-making to business decisions and money, but we turned to Fuller himself who tells us, "There's just no movement on it right now. Paramount and New Line are simply evaluating if they're going to make it and that's what's happening."

That said, where did the script turn? "Camp Crystal Lake was going to open, I can tell you that. And a portion of the movie did take place in the snow."

There you have it Voorhees fanatics. While this doesn't sound like the doom and gloom news you got last week, it doesn't look like we'll get to see Jason on the big screen as soon as we hoped.

Today, We Were Supposed to Get Friday the 13th Part 2

August 13, 2010

August 13, 2010 is upon us.

Disciples of Jason Voorhees might recall today was the day that Platinum Dunes - Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form - had penciled in as the release date for their sequel to 2009's Friday the 13th, starring Jared Padalecki, Amanda Righetti and Derek Mears.

Needless, to say, a return trip to Crystal Lake hasn't happened and it doesn't look like it's going to be happening any time soon. Why not? You can say it's a bout of bad luck.

When Shock Till You Drop caught up to producers Fuller and Form on the Chicago set of A Nightmare on Elm Street in June of 2009, the duo were excited to continue the Voorhees-orchestrated killing spree.

Mark Swift and Damian Shannon were confirmed as a writers and it was revealed that we would see Voorhees lurking about the Crystal Lake grounds in the snow.

"Whatever we need to do to make our kills feel clever in our second film is what we're going to do. I think turning Jason into a space-going astronaut isn't the direction we're going to go in.

But that's a criticism that goes to my heart. I feel I failed the fans in that those kills were not original enough," said Fuller.

Shooting was anticipated to begin at the end of 2009, but as the end of the year neared there was no green light from the studio.

Come Halloween ‘09, Fuller stated, “Still hoping for some good news that will take us back to Crystal Lake."

In the meantime, Mears was once again locked to play Jason, however, no other cast members were confirmed.

3D talks and a release date rumors persisted in the ensuing weeks.

Then, in December, Box Office Mojo updated their release listing for the title to "TBD." As Platinum Dunes continued to focus their efforts on A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th Part 2 went cold.

April of 2010, Fuller frankly told fans of the series, via his Twitter account, that the sequel was "dead."

For clarification, Shock talked to the producer who told us: "There's just no movement on it right now. Paramount and New Line are simply evaluating if they're going to make it and that's what's happening."

He also revealed that Platinum Dunes was taking baby steps away from the horror genre with plans for a Monster Squad remake and an action film in the works.

This leaves Friday the 13th Part 2 in a state of limbo, in spite of the first film's box office draw (nearly $100 million worldwide). A script most certainly exists. But much like Platinum Dunes' first Friday outing, the road to getting the film in front of cameras is going to be a bumpy one.

Multiple parties have a stake in the franchise and all of them need to be appeased before Jason runs amok. The masked killer has overcome many hurdles - including death itself - so never rule out his resurrection on the big screen again!

Warner Bros. has officially announced the follow up to 2009’s Friday the 13th relaunch and have even given a release date! Friday the 13th part 2 will reportedly pop into theaters on Friday, August 13, 2010! Nothing has been official in regards to what the plot will be this time around, but after the confusion that MMA fighter Tim Sylvia was already working on a sequel, Brad Fuller shot that rumor down by stating that Derek Mears was his Jason. As for the plot, it has been hinted that Crystal Lake may finally be presented in a wintry setting, but that has yet to be confirmed. Friday the 13th part 2 will be the 13th film in the 30 year old franchise.

Platinum Dunes is currently locked tightly in post production and touching up their current project, a remake of 80’s classic “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (trailer) featuring Jackie Earle Haley in the role of Freddy Krueger, a role made famous by Robert Englund. Drop in often as more news will be coming!

Too bad. But I did watch Friday The 13th Part 3-D on Friday.
