Simon Cowell is reported to be in talks to buy the rights for Saturday Night Fever.

The Britain's Got Talent judge is interested in remaking the cult dance film with producer Robert Stigwood, who owns the rights to the screenplay.

Simon, 49, wants Zac Efron, 21, to play the lead role and rapper Timbaland to rework the classic soundtrack.

‘The charm offensive has been in full swing and they made a breakthrough over the last couple of weeks,’ a source tells The Sun.

‘Robert is keen to get some assurances the original won't be completely butchered. Simon has been drawing up a list of people he wants to get involved. When that meets Robert's expectations, the contracts will be signed.’

John Travolta, 55, starred in the 1977 original as dancer Tony Manero.

Breaking News! Rumours have been rampant over the last several hours that Simon Cowell is going to remake the 1977 John Travolta classic Saturday Night Fever with High School Musical star, Zac Efron in the lead role. However, it was just confirmed that Saturday Night Fever wasn't going to be remade but instead, a prequel to High School Musical was in the works. ;)

Has anyone reminded Simon that disco died a long time ago? I know it's sort of made a comeback, but you don't hear of any disco songs making Casey Casem's countdown these days!

Actually Andrea, if I read the article correctly, Hip hop producer Timbaland is rumored to redo the score, so this won't be about disco, probably more up to date music, which really defeats the purpose, I think.

I WOULD watch if someone did a parody of High School Musical, Glee, etc. I think THAT could be hysterical.

I think the Wayans Brothers already did with the movie, "Dance Flick." :)
