LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chastity Bono is having a sex change to become a man. A spokesman for Bono, born a girl to Sonny and Cher, says he "has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity" and began the sex-change process earlier this year.

Publicist Howard Bragman said Bono is proud of his decision and hopes "that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue."

The 40-year-old writer, activist and reality-TV star came out as gay 20 years ago, Bragman said.

In the book "Family Outing: A Guide to the Coming-Out Process for Gays, Lesbians, & Their Families," Bono describes the realization of being "somehow different — specifically different from who my mom expected me to be."

A message left with Cher's representatives was not immediately returned Thursday.

Bono's second book, "The End of Innocence: A Memoir," details how relationships with Joan, a lover, and Sonny and Cher changed after coming out.

In 1995, Bono posed for the cover of the gay magazine The Advocate and began working for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

They just... know. That's all. They know in the same way we know we're heterosexual, homosexual or even asexual.

I have nothing but respect for transgendered people, and find part of this thread to be in poor taste. People who are in the process of transitioning to the other gender prefer to be referred to the other gender when they still look like their original-born gender. They're going to get there eventually, and it's a LOOOONG and very expensive process involving therapy, hormone pills and the like.

I wish Chaz the best of luck in his transition. :)

I respect Chastity Bono for being true to herself, but I wonder if this is really the right decision. I question if she's going to be any happier at the end of the day. I think this has got to be hard on her mother too.

I agree. I've read where some people who have gotten sex changes weren't any happier than they were before. I guess only time will tell.

I'm old enough to remember Sonny and Cher putting Chastity on their Variety Hour in the 70's. (She just came on for a few seconds, didn't sing or dance or something, lol).

I do think that some people are kind of born with the wrong bodies. I've known people who just seemed like they weren't comfortable being a man or woman. And ultimately it's her choice and she has to live with the consequences. Something tells me Cher will be very supportive. I wish her all the best.

Chastity's gender issue must be a serious problem for her. Anyone willing to go through this long and painful procedure must really be positive that it is the right thing for him/her. I am sure that most of us can't understand what she is going through. I can only wish her success and happiness.

I haven't been through any gender issues myself so I probably don't understand how it really feels, but I like to think that I can still empathise somewhat. I can imagine what it must be like. Her happiness is what matters, so if she's happy with this and really prepared for it, then more power to her.

It's exactly how I expected Cher to react. She's always been super open-minded and cool. I so :heart: her - she can sing, act do comedy - the whole nine yards - AND most importantly she has a big heart. I hope one day I'll have the honor of meeting her.
