View Full Version : TV Land and Nick at Nite - What a waste
Schmoopie 06-09-2009, 12:27 AM I tried to find an existing thread on this but the list was too long, so I'm starting another one.
I don't have TV Land, but I was thinking about this the other day. I just don't get why both of these have gone downhill. I've read so many things on this board about how bad TV Land has gotten and I don't really care for Nick at Nite anymore.
When Nick at Nite started back in the 80's, I think, they had a handful of classic shows; Donna Reed, Mr. Ed, Patty Duke, Car 54 Where Are You?, etc. Apparently Nick at Nite did really well, because they started adding more old shows and eventually dedicated a whole network to classic shows. Well then suddenly on Nick at Nite, the old shows were yanked and eventually the shows became newer and newer. Now, the 80's shows are great, but I think they should have stuck to the old classics. I didn't even know about Donna Reed or any of those shows until Nick at Nite came along.
And now I read that TV Land has started airing crappy reality shows and stuff like that. What gives? I just don't get it. I can see where TV Land would show newer (80's) shows because it's on 24/7 where as Nick at Nite is only in prime time.
Still, as popular as TV on DVD is today, you'd think that TV Land could focus on what it was supposed to be like at the beginning. Classic shows!
Andrea
I can see why NAN has evolved. I have a hard time seeing SpongeBob and Donna Reed on the same channel. So, I have nothing against them adding shows like Malcom in the Middle, etc because the newer sitcoms fit well with the newer shows during the day.
However I don't get TV Land....they say they "can't survive" on classic TV only and need the originals, shows like Roseanne, etc to keep them on-air so they will be downsizing the classics, although they will keep some classic shows. I find that hard to buy, but whatever. Save for movies, most of Hallmark's programming is what I call "classic" (MASH, Lucy, Little House, Golden Girls) and they seem to be doing just dandy. WGN America seems to be moving in to the more classic TV direction(although I doubt they will ever be all classics), so I have good hopes for older shows there.
I have nothing against newer shows, and actually enjoy a good bit of them and think networks like USA, FX, TBS, TNT, NAN, Lifetime, etc are doing well - I just think there needs to be a couple of networks airing a variety of shows from the 50s-80s.
tvparadise 06-09-2009, 11:18 AM Nick-at-Nite has evolved nicely. I'm not necessarily a fan of too many of their shows (I like Home Improvement and I'm enjoying what I've seen of The Nanny).
I don't think TV Land is as bad as many make it out to be. It still shows more classic TV than any other network. The movies/originals really don't take up too much of the schedule. I think off the clock and Paid Programming is the worst aspect of the network right now. I don't watch the movies/originals, but there is still a lot I enjoy on TV Land. I do think it was better 5 or so years ago and I'm sure it WILL get worse, but I'm going to enjoy it while I still can.
JulieSomoski 06-09-2009, 11:52 AM Nick at Nite has become one of the best cable channels this year. Their shows are great, and there scheduling is both smart and convenient. They evolved with the times, and their transition from classics to contemporary was nicely done, in my opinion.
browneyes106 06-09-2009, 12:13 PM TV Land is sort of my good side since they started airing Roseanne.

Same here. I've been watching TV Land a lot more lately with Roseanne airing.
OOliver 06-09-2009, 01:53 PM The soloution is easy - fire everyone at both NAN and TVL, and hire all of US! WE'll show them classic TV.
The shows I would air to replace 90% of the garbage on each network today: "Maude", "The Musnters", "The Bob Newhart Show", "Rhoda", "Mary Tyler Moore", "Phyllis", "Bewitched", "I Dream Of Jeannie", "ILove Lucy", "The Lucy Show", "Here's Lucy", "The Flying Nun", "Family Affair", "The Courtship of Eddie's Father", "Room 222", "Gidget", etc.

But Spongebob is Nickelodeon not N@N. It's not as if Family Matters and Fairly Oddparents really go hand in hand.

But Family Matters and Fairly Oddparents go better than Maude and Fairly Oddparents, doesn't it? NAN has evolved fairly into a network that airs modern classics.
Mr. Television 06-09-2009, 04:50 PM Classic TV fans always seem to get the short end of the stick. :ohno:
MickeyMac 06-09-2009, 05:50 PM TVLand and Nick at Nite have been a waste for ages. Once their abandoned their classic TV format and got more and more shows from the 70's that was their downfall. Thing went from bad to worse when they included all the stuff from the 80's on. Now both stations are sh*t.
Nick-at-Nite has evolved nicely. I'm not necessarily a fan of too many of their shows (I like Home Improvement and I'm enjoying what I've seen of The Nanny).

TV Land has a lot to work with, but unfortunately they choose to cram the same few shows down our throats every night. They have all of those series in the mornings, not to mention Beaver, Hogan's Heroes, Brady Bunch, Green Acres - which aren't even airing. I would like to see a decent sitcom block again from 4-8pm. They might as well air Beaver, they just renewed it again and haven't used a single play since 6/1. They have a pretty impressive stable of shows, but the ones that are so great are either airing in the morning or not at all :(
LOL - Maude and Fairly Oddparents on the same network - ouch!

NOW you're talkin', Partner! ;)
TVFactFan 06-13-2009, 12:29 PM TV Land has pulled me back in with the adfdtion of Married with Children.
N@N still has me with George Lopez, Family Matters, and the Nanny.
N@N still has been way better than TV Land in the past 5 years
ekkostar 06-13-2009, 06:45 PM I haven't watched Nick at Nite or Adult Swim in so long that I couldn't tell you if it were bad or good. With the availability of TV shows on DVD that aren't in syndication on Netflix, I feel like I don't have to watch the same stale reruns on N@N, AS and TVL anymore.
I did see The Nanny around 4am a few weeks ago but that was about it, I mean I still have my crush on Mr. Sheffield, but that doesn't justify my getting sick of the show when Lifetime ran it into the ground earlier in the decade. I really do wish that WGN would start setting up a good late night schedule to compete with N@N, TV Land Prime and Adult Swim. I need more WKRP and Newhart in my life.
James 06-13-2009, 08:17 PM They evolved with the times, and their transition from classics to contemporary was nicely done, in my opinion.
I'm afraid I disagree with you, Julie. I've always found those networks as havens for classics, with the "Big 3" networks havens for contemporary shows, hence the need for TVLand and Nick at Nite as "cures" for the "Big 3." Like they say, if it ain't broke...
yankeesrj12 06-13-2009, 10:08 PM I'm sorry to say it, but I disagree with most of you. What is a "classic" is now changing. As years go by, the classics will be shows from the 70's and 80's. In 30 years, the classics will be shows of today. You just have to change with the times. TV Land was right in what they were doing. If I'm not mistaken their ratings are higher than ever.

I agree. "Classic" is such a hard word to define anyway...something from yesterday could be considered classic. IMO, for a TV channel that's focused on classic TV (which TVLand has already said that they aren't anymore), I think 20 years or more after the debut date is good, and no more than 10 years after the cancellation. For Nick at Nite, I'd say anything that debuted between 15 and 5 years earlier.
Mr. Television 06-13-2009, 11:30 PM Classic and the 2000's just don't go together. Twenty years from now nobody's going to want to watch a rerun of some crappy reality show.
Retro4Life 06-13-2009, 11:33 PM Does Nick at Nite even do their yearly Top Twenty Five Episode Countdown anymore? I used to love those back in the 90's...

I think you're absolutely right about that-- more people will watch reruns of "MTM" and "Taxi" than will ever see reruns of, say, "Survivor" or "Big Brother." The first two are true classics, but the reality shows? I severely doubt it.

But who is to say that people won't watch reruns of reality shows? If a channel was airing reruns of The Real World/Road Rules Challenge right now, I'd be watching that religiously.

I wasn't implying that absolutely no one would see the reality shows; this is because taste is subjective. I was only trying to say that reality shows, in my view, will probably not become the classics that "MTM" and "Taxi" are. However, as I said, I wasn't trying to deny the fact that there are those who love reality shows. We are who we are, that's for certain.
hippiechick60 06-14-2009, 02:27 PM i just don't like them cause they don't show the monkees :)!
I think Viacom wants Nick@Nite to be for sitcoms from the 90s-2000s (well, by the looks of it, late 90s-2000s) and TV Land to be for more adult-skewing or adult-themed sitcoms, dramas, movies, and originals from the late 80s-2000s. I think we will continue to see older programming on TV Land diminished (we already are, with one of their highest rated shows being almost dropped because of its demos) and only in the mornings and maybe afternoons.
As I keep saying, Hallmark and WGN America both have shown interest in older shows and I think these 2 will wind up showing the most classic TV of any cable channels. Hallmark isn't concerned about demos as much as most channels (thus, they can probably air older shows that get older demos) and WGN seems optimistic about the older shows (Sunday nights have doubled in ratings) and more are coming in the fall, Pavan says. For classic TV, I'm forgetting TV Land and moving on.

Question: What is this "one of their highest rated shows" of which you speak?

Andy Griffith. It is gone from regular weekdays now and has a marathon this coming weekend....then it just has a couple weekend showings (a marathon one night for a couple hours and a daytime airing I believe) after that for the time being, at least.

Tubehead 06-14-2009, 11:28 PM I quit watching tv landcouple months ago. sometime i watchsanford andson or the jerfersonsthats about it. what gets me is that they keep adding thess reality show. they say billion people watch them. i guss some people watch them. but they keep getting rid of classic tv. i don't see why they can't show reaity show and classic tv. i wish they would bring back i love lucy or addthe lucy show. tv land used to be great. after they starte airing high school reuion they been going down hill. she got the look thegirls look ulgy looking wOMEN . they even had a grandmama on the show then gergeo forman. i used to watch it it got boring after the first epsidoes. then the courger. this should beE on vhi or e channel. then they show the same moive that come on tbs or tnt. today they had married with childern marthorn. i didn't watch it. tv land keeps saying their trying to get younger people to wacth. my brother 22 years old i don't he know if he knowss what tv land is. nowthey keep aring roseann. then they keep showing Andy Griffith. i recommed checking getting cable box if youhave comcast. they got retero channel they show Manugm pi,the a-team dragent and the incdabile hulk. they show them in prime time. beat that tv land. i also recommed checking out wgn. they show coach, alf,WRKP, AND BOB NEWHART SHOW ON SUNDAYS.
i also got growning pains season one for 10 doallors atBi lo gergeroy stores.
Jude The Obscure 06-14-2009, 11:48 PM I don't watch either station very much and glad with all the old shows on DVD, I don't depend on them to entertain me! :) But yes, I realize a lot of folks don't have the option to get DVDs of all what they want... :(
I wish Hallmark would go ahead and add some more old shows. I love the shows they have, but it seems like they're on forever and all the time. 3 hours of the same show is just too much. I bet we will see more classics pop up there.
Jude The Obscure 06-14-2009, 11:56 PM the current trend in programming is blocks/mini-marathons. no one reruns things one timeslot a day anymore for the most part. Even shows 4 seasons or less, get these blocks.

I know, but I was meaning maybe along the lines of double takes, like Nick at Nite, TBS, Lifetime, WGN, TV Land, etc do....not these huge blocks like Hallmark does with Golden Girls. They've just never had a large selection of shows on the schedule.
Jude The Obscure 06-15-2009, 02:10 AM Hey, you changed your user name  Just when I was used to you as 607080sTV :)
But Lifetime seemed to rerun GG in blocks too, IIRC. Or it seemed that way!

LOL, sorry bout that! I am trying to keep the same username on all of the websites I use so I don't keep getting mixed up
Yeah, Lifetime usually did an hour/double take twice a day, and maybe four episodes in a row....I don't know if they ever did 12 episodes a day though like Hallmark, lol.

That's becoming the norm, and it bugs the crap out of me. Instead of constantly trying new things, most channels are figuring out what works and scheduling it a hundred times a day. For a lotta channels, it's not necessarily what they air that's the big problem, it's that they air too much of it.
SOAPnet, for example? I have absolutely NO qualms AT ALL about them airing The OC and One Tree Hill on weekdays. Those are FABULOUS shows, I like them both, and they're sufficiently soapy, as far as I'm concerned. But The OC only made 92 episodes. One Tree Hill has about 130 episodes, but still, that's not enough for two eps a day. BH90210 has 296, so yeah, that makes sense. SOAPnet KNOWS that they could squeeze in an hour of Ryan's Hope at a decent timeslot if they wanted to.
