I've had lots of jobs getting paid a low salary and i hated those jobs. These jobs are modern day slavery to me. Ya'll may not look at it like that but that's what it seems to me. People can't survive on a low salary.

You should be thankful that you've got a job at all these days, no mater what the salary. There are millions out there who don't.

I know what you mean. I was looking at the employment ads on craigslist here in Atlanta, and they had a position where they wanted you to have 5 years experience in Administrative duties, computer skills, ability to plan meetings, work legal cases for attorneys, and be willing to work 6 days a week. The pay was $7 an HOUR. Who can live on $7 an hour? And they want someone with all kinds of experience. Good luck to them- lol.

Well you as a grown man have to figure out a way to extend your education background and develop certain job skills.

I completely agree that salaries today are ridiculously low, especially for retail and so forth. I work in an office and I've been there almost 8 years, so I make pretty good money but if I look back on what I started out making 10 1/2 years ago in the same field, it's only about $5 more per hour. But I'm definitely not complaining. I don't see how people can survive on less than $10 an hour these days. That used to be a lot of money to me, but now it's just the norm. I consider myself very fortunate to have a job, though.

Its unfortunate that there are some low paying gigs out there, but with everything that is going one I think people should be thankful they even have a job. So many people dont.

Solomon i don't wanna go to college or a job trade school to further my education and learn some job skills that pay good because i'm not a good student. I wasn't a good student in middle school and high school. I basically got passed along and graduated on time because i probably had a C average. I'm not good at studying and taking tests. I have a learning disability and that's why i've only been able to get low paying jobs. My fulltime job i have now is the most money i've made since i've been working. Yes i'm lucky that i got 2 jobs because most people don't have one. But i still think it's wrong for some jobs to pay a low salary no matter what the work is. Some jobs figure just because the work isn't that hard and it's not challenging such as jobs like fast food places, Walmart, Target, dollar stores, movie theatres, 7 Eleven, restaurants that people at those jobs should get paid a low salary. Some of these jobs don't even give the workers medical and dental insurance and everybody needs that. These jobs don't do nothing but exploit the workers and i see that everyday especially with these immigrants. That's why i said it's slavery to me. Just another form of slavery.

Isiah, you are even worse than Solomon when it comes to complaining about
life in general. You are down and you don't seem to want to better yourself
and you blame other people for it, like your employers or other black men
or women in general. I would hate to be you.

FYI, having a learning disability does not mean that you cannot succeed. I have a learning disability, too. I see a learning specialist every week, a psychiatrist twice a week, and I work my ass off to get good grades. Sure, I complain every day, and wish I didn't have to struggle-- but really, please don't complain if you don't even try.

First off- you've slandered a bunch of companies of which you have not even verified their salaries or benefits. Seriously, do you know what Target pays employees after 6 months of employment? No? neither do I.

And any secure, established institution you make look for employment would surely not employ illegal immegrants. And if they did, they would do so in such a manner you would be able to establish or be able to hold them accountable.

And throwing around the word slavery is offensive.

I'm no genius, but your context is self-serving, self-appeasing crap.

That's more venom than I'm used to. Perhaps you should walk a mile in his shoes. :p

Rant on !

I know from experience that bringing home 300 for two weeks work can make you bitter and sad. At my old job and sometimes at my current one, I have people questioning my intelligence or releasing their anger at me or both. At my current job the money is good and my co-workers, fantastic, but the company is run by ******** chimps. They always mess up the paychecks, they change the rules on what they value in an employee, they give you little reward for doing a great job, they don't provide a clean working environment, and they make promises they rarely keep. What used to bring me pleasure turns in to the daily grind, and it's slowly grinding away my humanity. I've had to walk out a few times because of it. I think to myself "How dare I quit ?" "Don't you know people are jobless?" "It's the most money I've ever made". "How dare I throw it away?" I have a sizable savings account for the first time in my life. The company is grossly incompetent and the rules change ever day, but somehow I make it through.

Rant off !

Well thanks for listening, back to lurking mode.

You are so right about that. I wasn't the greatest student in school for a long time and it wasn't until the last two years that I stumbled upon a form of studying that was easy and so good, it was like having a photographic memory in exams.
I even failed math and dropped it after grade 10. I was always horrible at math. Then, after 20 years of working, I was laid off and they gave me tests and assessments of where my strengths and weaknesses were. I aced the math portion getting a 98% (meaning I was better at math than 98% of the population). A total turnaround from school.
It's what motivates you when and how you find the right way of learning and studying that works for you.

I tend to at least partially agree with Isiah - it's very tough when you've gone through the schooling they tell you too and you've even got a degree but you're working for $9.00 an hour anyway.

OH Nuts!

If possible, look into getting some kind of free vocational testing. If you're learning disabled, that may qualify you for some type of free testing/training though a state or city agency. Almost everyone has something they're really great at doing, sometimes it just has to be unearthed.

Also, just because a job is low paying does not mean that it's not hard work. I think fast food jobs are quite hard and the pay does not match the skills involved in many cases.

A really great skill to have? Being able to work well with others. Taking the time to think of their needs and how to be of service to them. Not in a groveling way of course, but just taking the time to do little courtesies. That kind of mindset often opens doors to something better.

OH Nuts!

I can i.d. My current jobs pays extremely well and I'm lucky (& very grateful!) I have it and can sock away $$ esp. in this economy. I occassionally have my moments when I feel the way you do, but I usually just step outside the office and make a phone call to a trusted friend and vent, and my resolve immediately returns. I've made up my mind to cry all the way to the bank. I also use the expression "I am not my job" and focus on something nice I can do for myself. Buying a DVD (DVD set) of a fav show often helps. Also doing something nice with a friend on the weekend. Hang in there. I hear you!

Cyberalias81, i can definitely relate to how you feel at your job. I've had several jobs that i hated because i didn't get along with a lot of my co-workers, i didn't like the work and i didn't like the salary. It's easy for people to talk about situations they've never been in. So that's why i ignore people's advice who've never been in my situation. I know most people on here can relate to what i'm talking about because most people hate jobs that pay a low salary. Dlemond i don't have to know those jobs salaries that i mentioned. I'm willing to bet those jobs i mentioned pay a low salary and don't give their employees health and dental insurance. I used to work 3rd shift at Target and i hated that shift. Plus i hated the work i was doing which was stocking the shelves with merchandise. I think i was making $9 a hour. I'm glad i got fired because like i said, i didn't like working 3rd shift and i didn't like the work i was doing. I like working first shift because i like sleeping at night and getting up early in the morning.
