View Full Version : Horror Anthology Film "Trick r' Treat" 10/6/09
JamesG 06-07-2009, 02:19 AM Trick r' Treat was originally supposed to be released in October 2007 but it kept getting pushed back until now. It is now going to be released on DVD (unconfirmed at this point for Blu-ray) on October 2009.
The film will feature 5 horror stories centered around Halloween and they are all intertwined by the appearance of a mysterious little trick-or-treater wearing a sack.
The stories will be:
1. A suburban couple learn the dangers about blowing out a jack-o-lantern before midnight; starring Tahmoh Penikett.
2. A principal who is a serial killer teaches a young boy about the true meaning of Halloween; starring Dylan Baker.
3. A girl dressed as Little Red Riding Hood is stalked by a hooded figure at a Halloween festival; starring Anna Paquin.
4. A group of pranksters learn about the horrible truth surrounding the local urban legend on "The School Bus Massacre".
5. An old hermit is visited by a mysterious little trick-or-treater full of mischief; starring Brian Cox.

I love horror anthologies. There hasn't been a good one in a while. I'm not expecting this one to be greatness but I look forward to it.

I love anthologies/vignettes too. I think this movie could be good because it is centered around Halloween and maybe the stories will somehow be connected in the end.

Yeah it looks like it'll be cool. Also, I saw that the chubby kid from Bad Santa is in this lol and I want to see what he's going to do.
browneyes106 06-07-2009, 04:22 PM I love that kid in Bad Santa. He was so obsessed with the advent calendar lol.
JamesG 07-15-2009, 04:16 PM It has been confirmed that Trick r' Treat will be released on DVD/Blu-ray in Oct. 2009.
Here is the cover art that has been just released:
Torgo 07-15-2009, 07:28 PM I've been wanting to see this- and when I saw the trailer and the kid from Bad Santa popped up, that totally sealed the deal for me. I love that kid!
I really like anthology horror. But recently they're to few and far between, and sometimes we end up with crap like Creepshow III.
I've been collecting them on DVD, and have some of the harder to find ones on VHS. There's been a few good 'cheesy' ones like Night Train To Terror(which had 3 cheesy films edited down into it), and there's one from the director of Bloodsucking Freaks, called Blood Bath which is a lot of silly fun.

Not to be confused with the awful Campfire Stories(2001)

Oh yeah, that Bad Santa kid rocks. It's too bad he hasn't been in a lot of stuff.
I love anthology horror. Some of my favorites are The Vault of Horror, Creepshow I-II, and Nightmares.
Television I love Tales From The Crypt, Tales From The Darkside, and Masters of Horror.
I'm also waiting for the DVD release of Fear Itself. I didn't get to see many episodes of it when it aired last year; it pretty much is the network tv version of Masters of Horror.

The only other movie I saw the kid in was the one where a group of kids get stranded at the airport during Christmas.
Those are great, I also like Trilogy of Terror(Zuni Fetish Doll!), Dead of Night '45, Kaidan, The Offspring, Tales from the Quadead Zone, and Screams of a Winters Night(a neat little low budget one from the 70's- it was the first anthology I saw where it had characters sitting around a fire telling stories)
For TV I also like Tales From The Crypt, and From the Darkside, also Monsters, Darkroom, Twilight Zone, Ray Bradbury Theater, The Hitchhiker
I totally missed Fear Itself when it aired, I'll have to rent it when it comes out.

Another one I forgot to mention before is Alfred Hitchcock Presents. I know of Twilight Zone, and I think everyone does, but I really haven't seen many eps. of it. One I remember is the one with the goblin on the plane.
I also did not see the revival series with Forest Whitaker. Is that one worth it?
My dad actually has some original Tales/Vault of Horror comics from back in the day. He also had a hardcover book that is a compilation of some of the old comics. I inherited it from him.
I forget the name of it but my favorite story in there was the one with the cop and the prisoner out in the desert. The guy is handcuffed to the dead officer. They made an episode of this one.
browneyes106 07-16-2009, 01:46 AM Not to be confused with the awful Campfire Stories(2001)
Campfire Stories was awful. I remember watching on Showtime and I was so glad I didn't rent it because sometime later my cousin and his wife told me they rented it and wished they hadn't spent $3.00 on the rental.

Alfred Hitchcock Presents is great, I wish Chiller would put that back on. Another good one is Night Gallery.
The last Twilight Zone, and the ones from the 80's were 'hit or miss' for me. Some episodes were really outstanding, some of the ones with Whitaker were remakes from the original. One I enjoyed was a sequel to an episode from the original. The episode with Billy Mumy where he wishes people into the cornfield, in the sequel he reprises his role, and his real life daughter plays his daughter.
I'd say the one with Whitaker is worth renting.
Whenever SyFy channel marathons Twilight Zone I always DVR them, the last time they played some from the 80's, which was nice since I hadn't seen those in awhile.
That sounds like a great 'Tales' collection to have. I don't have any of those, I do have a bunch of the DC horror comics from the 70's- The Witching Hour, Ghosts, Secrets of the Haunted House, House of Mysteryetc. A few from Marvel. Also, some of Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery, a couple of Twilight Zone comics. And a stack of the Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella horror magazines.

I don't remember how I saw it, I've been trying to forget:lol:
browneyes106 07-16-2009, 02:17 PM Another great anthology show was Night Visions on Fox.
JamesG 07-16-2009, 02:43 PM Though it was made for a younger audience I still love Are You Afraid Of The Dark?. It was one of the few shows that aired on Nickelodeon to show blood and a little gore.
However, I'm not too familiar with it when they brought the series back in 1999 for a year. By this point I was in high school and my interest in Nickelodeon was not as great as it used to be.
I also loved Goosebumps that used to air on FOX. I still have a few VHS tapes from this show when they were first released; one I have is "The Haunted Mask".

I also loved Goosebumps. The Haunted Mask and Say Cheese or Die were my favorites. Last fall Cartooon Network aired reruns right before Halloween.

Yeah, I didn't see much of the Are You Afraid Of The Dark? revival. I know that they had on Elisha Cuthbert as a Midnight Society member.
I have one VHS of the show. I had won a Nickelodeon contest and the prize was an autographed "Alex Mack" book and the VHS of "The Tale Of Cutter's Treasure". That was a two part episode that had Charles Dutton as a guest star. I always loved how all Nickelodeon VHS were orange.
I have a few eps. that are my favorites:
-the one where Nosferatu comes out of the movie theater screen.
-the one with the vampire in the hospital during the night shift
-the one with the comic book villain coming to life, "The Ghastly Grinner"
For Goosebumps I liked the one with the alien librarian and the one with the piano teacher who takes kids' hands.

JamesG 09-01-2009, 06:34 PM EXCL: Trick's Release a True Treat for Dougherty
Source: Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
September 1, 2009
"All of these screenings have been awesome, because rarely, as a filmmaker, do you get to see your film with an audience this many times," says writer-director Michael Dougherty, joining ShockTillYouDrop.com for a quick lunch on a summer afternoon.
He's fresh from a screening of his horror anthology film Trick 'r Treat in San Diego where it played to a packed audience. "With a wide release film maybe you'll drive around on opening night to a couple of theaters but every time this has been with a film-loving, enthusiastic audience. From Screamfest to [Ain't It Cool's] Butt Numb-a-thon, it's been really cool."
Since its completion in the summer of 2007, Trick 'r Treat has shouldered the unfortunate distinction of being "the film Warner Bros. wouldn't release." The "why" of the matter is still unknown. Regardless, the film has enjoyed a festival run and is finally making its DVD and Blu-Ray debut on October 6.
Dougherty, now on the press circuit, says he's thrilled people are embracing the film. Something he had to do all over again months after it was completed. "I stepped back and didn't want to see it. I was done. But Butt Numb-a-thon was when I was re-introduced to it and I fell in love with it all over again."
Looking back, he's grateful and surprised by the cast he attracted which includes Anna Paquin (True Blood) and Brian Cox (both of whom starred in X2: X-Men United which Dougherty co-wrote), Dylan Baker, Leslie Bibb, Rochelle Aytes, Tahmoh Penikett and Lauren Lee Smith.
"It was a dream come true because we got my first choice on every single role. You create that dream list of who you want and assume you're never going to get them, because that's usually the case, or maybe a couple. But every actor said yes." Cox even showed a certain exuberance when he came to getting into his character, Mr. Kreeg, a Halloween "Scrooge" of sorts who doesn't follow any of the holiday's traditions and is visited by "Sam" the film's sinister little character. "He designed the look for [Kreeg]. He wanted the long hair, the nose, a prosthetic scar on his face. He really worked with the makeup people and we warned him it'd be two and a half hours of makeup each day, but he said he'd do it. On his final day, on the final shot, he reached up and ripped his face off like in V. 'Never again,' he said."
Pressed for his take on what's behind Hollywood's palpable contempt for anthology films, Dougherty seems to be in the dark as the rest of us, but he offers this: "It's really weird studios don't like anthologies. Especially, a format which had a genuine golden era in the '80s. When you think back there was "Amazing Stories", a reboot of the "Twilight Zone", a reboot of "Alfred Hitchcock", "Tales from the Darkside", "Tales from the Crypt" and feature movies of those things. There was a good eight years of horror and sci-fi anthologies then it went away like someone pressed a button and it all went away. No one has really tried to bring it back."
Granted, there have been some attempts with Masters of Horror and Fear Itself. But both faded away. That doesn't deter Dougherty from scheming a potential Trick 'r Treat series.
"I would love to maybe do it as a cable TV show or a Sci-Fi Channel show," he says. "It would be amazing to see if it became a mini-series or special event TV show. Could you run enough Halloween-themed stories? What I would love to do is bring together all of talents - both established and merging - because there is an amazing group of horror filmmakers right now. I think it's time to put the old masters and the new generation together. That's the fun of the anthology format is that you can bring together different voices."
More on Trick 'r Treat to come. Expect the Blu-Ray to be packed with all sorts of treats including Dougherty's original "Seasons Greetings" animated short (featuring Sam), deleted scenes, a commentary and a featurette on the history of Halloween.

comedyfreak 09-02-2009, 08:22 AM Dark Horizons shows the release date of Oct. 6th. It looks like it could be good.
Number 9 Dream 09-02-2009, 12:50 PM Are You Afraid of the Dark? was a great show (although the episodes became cheesy as time went on). The early episodes were pretty creepy. I love the one with the girl trapped in the mirror, the one with the creepy clown at the funhouse, and the one where girls get lost in the woods and they're saved by the ghosts of girls who'd gotten lost years earlier and never been found. That was a great show (along with Salute Your Shorts, but that a whole new thread!) :D

Yes, Are You Afraid Of The Dark? was great. I actually remember the first ep. I saw; it was the one with the scarecrow that comes to life on the farm.
I can't comment on the 1999 revival since I never saw those eps. I have heard from people who saw it that those were better in terms of technical aspects but the stories did not have the same charm as the original. One person even commented that they seemed like Animorphs eps.
Btw, Salute Your Shorts was great too.
