I think it was disciplinary. But, discipline in 1981 is a lot different than discipline in 2009 - hopefully for most children. I'm not saying it wasn't wrong, people just had different views back then. The whole spare the rod and spoil the child bit. When I was a kid in the 80s, a father came to school and whipped his son in front of our class. It was awful. I remember sitting in my desk frozen. I can't imagine something like that being allowed today.
