View Full Version : What kind of neighborhood do you live in?
Brad Russ 06-02-2009, 07:19 AM My neighborhood is kind of interesting. I wouldn't quite call it a Ghetto, as it has some of those characteristics, but it also has somewhat of a Suburban quality to it. On my part of the street, you basically have the blue collar, 9 to 5 working class types, and that's also what we have across the street. Awhile back though, some measure passed where they were going to put lower income people, and people on section 8 into our neighborhood. Now I'm not saying that all section 8 people are messed up, hell, I'm on social security and food stamps myself, but statistics do show that there's alot of poverty, drugs, violence, and unemployment in that community, and we've seen it affect our neighborhood dramatically. Around the corner where the apartment complexes are, is where all the crazy stuff goes on, and is where drug, gang, prostitution, etc are running rampad. My neighborhood's called Rockwood, and I believe it still has the largest Latino population in Oregon, about 80 percent. Shoot, there's about 20 Mexican restaurants in a 3 block radius. lol!! So yeah, it's very multicultural, and non-white races probably make up about 3/4 of the people here. I'm not complaining though, other then running into the occasional bigot, I haven't had too many problems with people here. So basically my neighborhood can best be described as a melting pot of all types of people. How would you describe your neighborhood??
browneyes106 06-02-2009, 09:20 AM The neighborhood I live is near a college, law school and medical school. So a lot of under undergrad and grad students that live in my area as well as professors and a lot of the people who work at the teaching hospital. There are a lot of different races in my neighborhood due to an educational environment. But in the neighborhood I live there is a lot of theft and car vandalism. Overall the area I live is an ok area.
Penny Lane 06-02-2009, 10:53 AM I live on a road sort of in the country about 10 miles west of Flint, Michigan. It's middle class made up mostly of GM workers and retiree's. Most homes including mine were built in the 70's.

I really like your house, it's cute. And your neighborhood seems nice. I loved Michigan when I visited there back in 2007. The people were really nice, and it was just a cool place with alot of history. I stayed at the Marriott where GM's headquarters is located. Those were good times. Hey, can I trade you neighborhoods?? ;)

MickeyMac 06-02-2009, 12:09 PM I live in the downtown area of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Its convient cause its near a lot of spots, and thats great cause when the weather is nice I can walk to places. In my area there are a lot of historical homes that have been turned into apartments. Mostly college kids and young adults live there. Its pretty diverse but mostly black and white people. Its safe for downtown, I havent had any problems. Its also right by one of my favorite hangouts the library.

We not that far away from each other. I'm in Kalamazoo.
Doodyville10019 06-02-2009, 01:19 PM I live in one of the western suburbs of Chicago. Where my husband and I live is directly in the approaching flight path of O'Hare Airport, so it gets very noisy around here all day and most of the night. We've gotten used to it, though.
As far as people go, we are one of the few non-Mexican-Americans living in our apartment building. There are only three other Caucasian tenants (besides us), so it gets interesting sometimes when there's a problem at the washing machines (which there recently was) if you're not good at speaking Spanish. The building next to ours is completely Mexican-American, so just about everyone in the area speaks Spanish (thank goodness I know enough to get around!), so it's hard to get to know anyone or make friends.
Other than that, it's pretty quiet - hardly any crime or gangbanging or stuff like that.
MrCleveland 06-02-2009, 04:06 PM A quasi-ghetto.
I live across the street by a group of hillbillies that live on the system, a few rentals, and once it was quiet...now it's rowdy.
I'd like to live in Garfield Heights. It's like the city...but it isn't.
Ohio8 06-02-2009, 05:02 PM It's semi-integrated. It's mostly middle-class whites, with a few black families.
Theda Bara 06-02-2009, 06:20 PM I live in an affluent neighborhood; where the average home will cost you a million (because I live near the beach); most of the people that live in my area, are Caucasian, middle-aged to retirement, former doctors or lawyers; there are a few Asian families.
Nighthawk76 06-02-2009, 06:35 PM I pretty much live in a typical middle class midwetern neighborhood.
phoebe7165 06-02-2009, 08:01 PM I just live in a typical residential neighborhood. The closest store is about a minute or 2 drive, C-store, and a strip mall with Domino's & a take-out chinese place.
Number 9 Dream 06-02-2009, 10:40 PM I live in a private community right near the beach (which only a five minute walk at the end of my block), so the area is pretty quiet and essentially a typical upper-middle-class neighborhood. You can't even park your car in the street after dark (which really pisses me off because our driveway can get pretty crowded when we have family get-togethers), but other than that minor squick, I'm pretty happy with where I live.

I so envy you and Tara!!! I would love to live near the beach, and it has infact been my dream since I was very young. I remember going to the beach a couple years ago, looking at the houses, and just wondering how peaceful, and great those people's lives must be. I envied them too. lol!! I think I'll achieve my dream one day. Don't know how, but it'll happen. :)
dawsongirl 06-02-2009, 11:05 PM Typical Midwest suburb, like Mike said. Nice area, but it has a real odd melange (hodgepodge, medley, mixture, mishmash, combo...lol) of houses. A brand new, $200K house could be right next to a $50K dilapidated shack. We have houses from the early 1900s and new ones. We have people who care about their houses and people who don't give two ****s. Some people have big lots, some tiny. The house across the street is worth $500K, but the *******s who live there are total white trash. Out yelling at their dogs at all hours...hell, yelling period. They let their dogs roam in the road and into other people's yards. Ugh. We're also near wooded areas, so I've seen raccoons and wild turkeys and ducks wandering around. I hear owls at night. Overall it's nice.
My previous neighborhood was similar, but it was a lot more uniform, all the houses were built around the same time, etc.
comedyfreak 06-04-2009, 03:59 AM I live in a so-so neighborhood, on weekends and sometimes during the day they blast loud mexican music. It drives me crazy, being a day sleeper I often have to use earplugs to sleep. My house got robbed and ransacked a little over a year ago. I'd love to live in a better quiet neighborhood.
Schmoopie 06-04-2009, 06:21 AM My neighborhood is really nice. We are fortunate that we live where we do because some of the houses on our street are really close together. Our house faces a cul-de-sac, and the house next door is built back from ours. We have a private driveway, plus a shared driveway. The shared driveway goes all the way to the next door neighbor's house. We live right behind a geenbelt, and even though there is an older neighborhood behind us, it's not too bad. The wierd thing about our street is that there are literally three neighborhoods on one street. The furthest one was already built when we moved in. That one has about fifteen houses. They started building houses in between that one and our neighborhood, but there are still a lot of empty lots, because of the economy, I guess.
TVQuack 06-04-2009, 06:32 AM I live right on the edge of a small college area, not too crazy thankfully, most of the people are professionals that live nearby.
InspectorExstead 06-04-2009, 08:01 PM I live in a typical suburbian town. Lol. The high school and middle school are both about a block or two away from my house, and all of the major stores/restaurants are less than a 5 minute drive away. As much as I hated living here in high school, the town has definitely grown on me. The beach is a short 15-20 minute drive away and so is the city. I wouldn't mind living closer to the beach, especially during the summer though. ;)
Tubehead 06-07-2009, 06:45 AM i don't live in neighorbhood. i live on hill with my anut dain and my cosuion mandy and my cosuion tiffany and my grandpapa.we don't have to worry about bulgers and stuff. Kalmazoo is very nice. I spent a summer program at Western Michigan University, and I loved the town. Very safe, and I remember it being very clean too.
I grew up in Northville, Michigan (right between Detroit and Ann Arbor). I miss it. :(

I hope your neighborhood isn't being plagued too much by the GM situation. Flint has been burned by that company before.
littlebelle 06-07-2009, 12:50 PM A bunch of crack houses n ****. LOL, just kidding. I live in unincorporated King County, right next to white center. There's some weirdos, but also some really nice people. Take a look for yourself- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Center,_Washington

How far do you live from where the old Kingdome used to be?

Ummm about 20 minutes or so. The kingdome/safeco field is in what we call "Sodo" which is outside of downtown in the industrial section.
Hollow 06-08-2009, 02:46 AM honestly, i don't know anymore. 10-15 years ago we were all pretty closeknit (especially us kids), held block parties a lot and such. most have moved away since then. there's a house next door to me and it seems like people are always moving in and out of it, but i never know who they are.

Yeah, the same thing has happened in my neighborhood. When we first moved here in 1974 we were all young couples with young children and we "neighbored" a lot. But then so many divorces. It changed everything. The homes have changed hands several times over. Now I only know a handful of people on my road. In fact we are about the only original family left. I sure do miss those early days. They were so good!:(
If you ever come back this way, we should get together and hang.
Definitely! :)
HuntingtonM15 06-08-2009, 03:34 PM I'm another who lives in a typical, middle class, midwestern neighborhood, and I'm in the suburbs of Detroit.
Chocoholic 06-08-2009, 04:08 PM My neighborhood used to be considered rural when we moved here in the mid 90's. Now, they've added several upper middle-class subdivisions near me.
Janice 06-08-2009, 04:27 PM I live in a condo complex, so I'm sort of insulated from my neighbors. It's on a cul-de-sac. On the two streets that lead to my building, there are simple well-kept houses. It's a working class neighborhood. The people in my condo building are very nice. One older woman is sick, and we just gave her a small potted silk arrangement the other day. My husband did a little handy work for another neighbor, and she baked us an apple pie. It was the best pie I ever had in my life. She owns a catering business. We've been here for 10 years. We left for three and a half years for my husband's job. We lived in a gorgeous townhouse there in a rich town. Old money. Still, there really is no place like home, and I missed this place. I hated the stairs there. I prefer one-level living. I honestly think I'll live here for the rest of my life. We're very happy here. :)

Which suburb if you dont mind my asking?
Dude111 06-05-2022, 07:47 AM My neighbourhood is kinda quiet, suburbs I guess you would say....
Would be nice having more about to do things with sometimes.....
We live outside the city limits where the houses are not too close together and there is some farm land across the road from us. But developers are trying to buy up all the land to build sub-divisions where the houses will be really close together. I dread it when they buy the field across from us and start building.
Caroline13 06-06-2022, 09:53 PM Lovely tree lined area about 1 mile from Ocean and most in my area are condos and apts and about one LONG block from my place homes are in the millions.
