View Full Version : When it rains, it pours...
PZelda 06-01-2009, 05:44 PM ...Blah.
I'm running into the same predicament Tara ran into late last year/earlier this year.
I went in for my yearly female exam almost a month ago. Was told I would get the results from that appt in a few weeks. The "few weeks" ended this morning, when I got an email from the nurse who did my exam.
The results came back abnormal, showing mild signs of pre-cancerous activity. It's not the first time I've had abnormal results... My yearly exam last year was abnormal as well. Last year, my nurse just told me to come back in for another exam six months after the original yearly exam. That was May '08 and November '08, respectively. November put me in the all-clear, as far as I know. Because the abnormal results have occurred AGAIN, this means I have to go in for a colposcopy. That's COLPOscopy - not to be confused with COLONscopy (ew). It's not a LEEP, at least (eek!), but still. UGH. I go back to the doc in two weeks to have this done.
****! This is putting a serious delay in the plans I had for myself. :( Geezus. I turn 24 in two months, this shouldn't be happening. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing.
Sure could appreciate thoughts/good vibes my way. :) And don't worry, I'm not going to leave you guys hanging. I'll definitely update after I've had my appt & find out the results.
TripperFan 06-01-2009, 05:52 PM Hey Sweety - please know that if it IS something, it'll be in the very early stages and the treatments are so much better than they used to be - safer AND you don't lose your chance for children.
Al, you're strong - I'm sure you'll be fine. And of course, you'll be in all our throughts and prayers so we'll beat this **** for ya like you guys did for me. :D
I'm going for my annual squish of the t*ts myself tomorrow, along with ultrasound and a bone density test and I'm a little nervous. Just cuz as you say, when it rains it pours and this year, even SO seems to be involved in a few floods.
This sure sucks, but at the same time, this is why we do need to keep up on our annual visits - so stuff can be caugh and treated early with excellent results.
:bighug:
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 06-01-2009, 05:56 PM Ugh, I'm sorry to hear that Allison. I hope everything turns out to be fine.
bandito 06-01-2009, 06:01 PM I hope everything goes well for you. :)
PZelda 06-01-2009, 06:02 PM Hey, thanks, Cathie! :)
I don't think I'll have any kids, but it's definitely good to know that most likely won't be compromised, at least.
I've never had any serious health problems that required medical attention before... This is definitely getting my attention!
Oh god, the mammogram. I am SO not looking forward to that when I reach 40. I'm sending YOU good vibes your way for your appt tomorrow! I'm sure you'll be just fine. :) I know the appointment part is no fun at all.
Thanks again!
Nighthawk76 06-01-2009, 06:16 PM I'm very sorry to hear this, Allison. I'm sure that everything will work out for the best though. :)

browneyes106 06-01-2009, 06:57 PM I'm sorry. I will keep you in my prayers.
Doodyville10019 06-01-2009, 07:19 PM Allison, I'm sort of in the same boat.
I had my mammogram with x-rays done back in March - the doctor found some abnormal tissue formations on my right breast that MAY or MAY NOT be cancerous. The doctor told me the same thing that your doctor told you - come back in six months for a follow-up mammogram (with an MRI this time around) to see what's going on with the tissue. My husband gave me the best advice - don't worry about it now and wait until September (my follow-up month) and see what happens then. Trust me - with my birthday the following month (October), I will be plenty nervous when follow-up time comes around.
In the meantime, I can ask you to do the same thing - hang tight, don't worry about it and wait until your follow-up time - THEN - and ONLY THEN - start worrying about it. There's nothing more you can do until then.
Mr. Television 06-01-2009, 07:20 PM Wow Allison. I'm so sorry that you have to go through all this. You will definately be in my thoughts and prayers. I'm sure everything will be okay. :)
MickeyMac 06-01-2009, 08:01 PM PZelda I hope everything works out and you get a clean bill of health.

Theda Bara 06-01-2009, 09:29 PM Allison, Hon, be strong; the colposcopy procedure takes about twenty minutes and is not as horrible as it sounds; relatively painless; even if you do need to have the LEEP done, that is also not that bad; hang in there, sweetie; and if you need someone to talk to (because you know I have been there) send me a PM.
Crimson and Clover 06-01-2009, 09:45 PM Im sorry Allison. I hope everything turns out ok. Ive had the colposcopy done the procedures not that bad.

Schmoopie 06-02-2009, 05:54 AM Hi Allison! Wow I wish I would have posted about this earlier becuase I went through almost the exact same thing back in April. I had started my cycle in late March and by late April when I went for my physical, I was still bleeding heavily. Totally not normal for me! Scary! So when they asked about my last cycle, I told them that it had been non-stop. They scheduled me for an ultrasound (an inner and outer) and found a cyst that "may or may not be begnine" . God I hate when they say that!
Anyway, so the same day that I went for the ultrasound, I had a mamogram. Compared to the ultrasound, the mamogram was pretty painless. Only minor discomfort when I was rearranging my arm so they could take the pictures. I'm 41 and that was my first one. They told me that they might have to call me back in if they find anything unusual.
Sure enough about a week later, they call me again and tell me to come back in (ASAP) for another mamogram. I had to go to the main branch hospital of my clinic for the exam. It was very thorough, but there was a little more pain involved. OMG, I was so freaked out when I looked at the pictures. I saw this white spot about the size of the end of my finger. Then they told me that the picture was enlarged and that what they found was only about 7 centimeters long! Turns out everything was okay in that department.
Then I had to go back to my other doctor (they had refered me to a gynocologist) and have a biopsy done on the cyst. It was kind of scary, and not very fun. Kind of like having a pap test, but it took forever. The doctor and her assistant were in there so it was like having day surgery. They injected this stuff into me and OMG, it gave me massive cramps, like I usually get during my cycle. Fortunately it went away fairly quickly.
They called me about a week later and told me that they found no cancer or anything, so I was VERY relieved!
My cycle finally stopped (ironically the day after I got those test results!), and started again weekend before last. However, I was still bleeding up until Friday, which is still kind of long for a cycle. I'm in Maui right now so I'm going to schedule a follow up with my doctor when I get back. As of right now, nothing is going on (cycle-wise), so I'm hoping that everything is back to normal.
Very scary moments though, since I don't usually have health problems like that. I had SIX doctor's appointments in SIX weeks! Crazy!!!!

OMG, that bleeding thing is very concerning! I am so glad you didn't wait any longer than a month to have that looked at. I know of someone on another message board who had pretty bad cycles like that, but I think hers lasted 2 weeks and she'd have to change tampons/pads every 45 minutes. It was really inconveniencing her in her life. So she finally went in for an, I think, ablation? She wanted them to tie her tubes, but they're trying that first. So far, so good. :) Your situation is different tho - hers weren't caused by a cyst. THAT part actually happened to my stepsis when she was about 16/17 years old. Scary!
If I'm reading that right - the cyst is still there, right? It hasn't burst or anything? I'd want that lil devil out of me ASAP! Hang in there - hopefully everything gets better for ya soon!
I'll be sending good thoughts/vibes your way. :)

Thanks again, guys. Definitely going to update!

 Oh I know - I've got enough else going on without having to think of that. I know something is there though. They ended up doing 3 mammograms on the right breast alone. I know there's a pea sized cyst near the nipple on that one at least (been there for years). But I do have a quarter size lump under my right armpit and it's discoloured in that area too. I thought it was a bruise, but it hasn't turned colour by now like it would have if it were a bruise.
What concerned me and the technician, is that the ultra sound on the right breast HURT so much it wasn't funny. They're not supposed to hurt at all! I could barely stand it the whole time she was imaging it and I can take a lot of pain.
They said my doctor should have the results in 3 - 5 days (course he's such a bonehead, I know I'll have to phone them and then it'll take another 2 days of them looking around their office for the report).
Don't worry about ovarian cysts too much - I've had plenty. My mother had one that took her ovary with it when it burst but she went on to have 3 children naturally. She was just glad when it was gone finally. They are nasty when they burst though - pain all down your leg - it's weird.
Jonathan 06-05-2009, 10:50 AM Good luck Allison. I hope this is all bening.

I'm sure everything will be fine, but it sure is scary not knowing what the future will bring. Thanks for the info on the cyst bursting. I didn't realize it would cause so much pain. I still need to go back to the doctor to check on mine. Actually I had forgotten about it, so thanks for the reminder!

...Bleeding for a whole month?! Oh my gosh. Were you cramping the entire time as well? I'm glad it wasn't cancer though. Thank goodness you got it checked though.
Last year, a friend of mine would bleed on and off for about two months. She'd bleed for a week, then not for a week, and it would continue. Sometimes two weeks. The worse part was that she was cramping a majority of the time, even when she wasn't bleeding. She got checked, but they didn't find anything wrong. No cancer, no cysts. It was strange. I don't think she's had similar episodes after though, but it was very scary when it was happening.

Is she on the pill? Sometimes birth control has a strange effect on a person's cycle. I know like the BEST periods, ever. I never have bad cramps, nor do I bleed a lot; but, I always had problems...

She's not on the pill. I know she was under a lot of stress at the time, but I wouldn't think stress would cause such problems. Maybe I'm wrong...?

PZelda 06-16-2009, 09:56 AM Ugggghhhhh. The appointment was this morning.
When the gyno applies the vinegar solution -- which burns like BURNING FIRE, just so you guys know -- it is to check for any white spots that may pop up. If white spots show up, then the gyno has to biopsy. That is what happened today, which was VERY decidedly UNPLEASANT. Holy crap, I almost started hyperventilating and I NEVER hyperventilate. :dizzy:
ANYWAY. Now starts another period of waiting - I was told that my gyno would phone me with the results in 7 to 10 days. Soooo I will definitely update again then!
ZeldaGilroy 06-16-2009, 10:15 AM ^Sounds like it was awful! Sorry. :( I hope you get good results soon. I know the waiting is hard.
TripperFan 06-16-2009, 11:26 AM She's not on the pill. I know she was under a lot of stress at the time, but I wouldn't think stress would cause such problems. Maybe I'm wrong...?
You're darn right it can cause problems! It's a known fact that quite often just before a woman's wedding, she'll come on whether she was due or not because of the stress.
I use to bleed up to six weeks constantly heavy flow - along with severe front and back cramps, clots, fainting and migraines. I ended up anemic from it. They did all the tests and everything came back fine.
Once I got on the pill that really helped a lot. I hated having to go off it, (because I was still smoking after age 35).
Midol would do nothing for me. Only the warmth of a heating pad. It got so bad, I didn't care and I'd go into to work with a heating pad. If I didn't, there's no way I could have worked.
In my early 40s I had a D&C for the bleeding (which came back just prior to menapause). It didn't help, so they did a further treatment (Balloon Therapy).
Stress tortures the body in ways we're not even aware of yet. Believe me.

Yah those biopsies are a party ain't they? If guys had to have this done to them, they'd quickly find another way of doing it!!
Hang in there and keep good thoughts. I have a good feeling everything will turn out to be o.k.. It could be the stress from work doing this to you even Al.
That reminds me, better call my idiot doctor for the results of my test. I don't think he normally even looks at them.

A party, indeed. A party that leaves ya begging for a Vicodin, Xanax or even Valium.

OK, so I finally got the results back a few days ago. However, I got my results back the day Michael Jackson died, so in all the craziness going on, I completely forgot to update.
I have what is called cervical dysplasia. My results still showed mild cancerous changes to the cervix. If a female's pap is abnormal, that's ideally what one would want to end up having -- if it's mild, it means it will more than likely clear up on its own within a year. In the meantime, I have to come in twice for the next year for paps, just to make sure everything clears up. In the event it gets worse, my gyno will refer me to a specialist with the possibility of surgery (laser or LEEP). But I don't think that will happen. I was told that mild dysplasia is actually a pretty common occurrence in females in my age group.
So, I guess that's that.

That is exactly what I had, except mine was not mild. I am so glad that everything turned out to be okay; and, yes dysplasia is very common...
