View Full Version : Censoring the "n" word
Jude The Obscure 05-28-2009, 10:47 PM Noticed when TV Land restarted the Jeffersons from episode 1, the part where George accuses Tom and Helen that Tom would call Helen the "n" word if they got in a fight--it was edited out!! All these years of syndication, cable reruns and even plays on TVLand and now they are gonna edit it out?? WTF???
MickeyMac 05-31-2009, 03:49 PM 1.) TVLand is a joke
2.) Political correctness is a disease.
The n word should not be censored at all. Yeah its harsh but some black people (not me) use that word, and lets be honest some white people use it too(not saying anyone here does).
BigManMike 06-02-2009, 02:19 PM I've noticed that, too. Episodes 1,6,7,12,24,79,117,121,149,and 168 have the n word in them. When shown on TV Land, those episodes are rated TV-PG-L, aside from the rest of the Jeffersons episodes that are rated TV-G when shown on TV Land. But why is the TV-PG-L rating needed if the n-word is censored from it? That is what I find strange.
Jude The Obscure 06-02-2009, 04:51 PM I just couldn't believe that after all these years.....they just now edit it out? I grew up watching this show on prime time TV! and the endless syndicated reruns.... are they doing the same for AITF reruns??
And why Sol hasn't commented on this??
Retro4Life 06-02-2009, 10:29 PM Yeah, the thing that the "PC" crowd doesn't understand, I think, is that by simply using the "n" word, you aren't endorsing it. You're just reflecting the way people sometimes talk, for better or for worse. By sugarcoating everything, the censors are really diluting the comic (or dramatic) power of the episode; the further away from our common experiences the dialogue and plots seem, the less we identify, and the less we enjoy.
gidgetgrape 06-02-2009, 11:00 PM I'm against censoring those episodes just because when we start editing/forgetting history, we repeat it.
Jude The Obscure 06-02-2009, 11:19 PM it's like some old movies that never get played anymore because of a few reflections on what society was like "back in the day"

But TV LAND don't edit when Tom calls George a N*gger in season 2-LOL
BigManMike 06-04-2009, 09:28 AM Another strange thing. In Episode 7 in Season 1, George is talking to Uncle Ward, who he called Uncle Tom, about who Uncle Tom was, and called Uncle Tom the n-word there. That episode is TV-PG-L on TV Land. But in episode 84, Part 1 of George and Louise in a Bind, in Season 4, when George and Louise are tied up by the burglar and they are flashing back to some old times, that scene is flashed back to of George calling Uncle Tom the n-word. But that episode is rated TV-G on TV Land. I don't understand what it is about TV Land's censorship and ratings. They just aren't consistent and don't make sense.
