View Full Version : My First Time
Smartboy 05-28-2009, 06:22 PM This is my very first time on the "Chit-Chat" board! Up until rather recently, I did not even know what it was! The reason that I am here now is to vent some frustration about my failure to stimulate any conversation on the "Sitcomes Online" Message Board. I have really been racking my brain to think of things to write about that other members might be interested in. My most recent thread was on the "Gimme a Break!" page and it is called "Brooke Shields". You would have to read the post to know why I gave it that name. In any event, the last time I checked, it had six views and zero responses. Other pages that I have been very unsuccessful in stimulating any conversation on for weeks if not months include, Caroline in the City, Mad About You, and Will and Grace. The Brady Bunch, Facts of Life, Friaser and Friends have also been on the slow side. Would anyone like to kick around some theories as to why this is?
Janice 05-28-2009, 06:38 PM Go easy. PM me if you're curious as to why.

I can understand your frustration but dont let it get you down. I have posted several threads here that have sunk without a trace and not one person posted on. I guess it depends on what people's tastes are. To be honest I would love to see more people post on the 50's and 60's sitcom threads but I know that there are a lot of younger people here who are not familiar or have any interest in older shows, and I can dig that. I would say keep posting, and sooner or later someone will post a reply.
Mr. Television 05-28-2009, 10:02 PM Yea a lot of the sitcom boards are dead. I wish more people would post over there but only certain ones seem to get all the action. At least your trying.
Hollow 05-28-2009, 10:09 PM if you look around here, threads usually have about 10 times more views than replies.
Nighthawk76 05-28-2009, 11:40 PM You can never really tell when a thread is going to go over well or not. About two weeks ago I created a thread on the Family Ties board called "Do You Really Think There Is A Family Out There Like The Keatons" which I was really very proud of and not a single person responded to it. However, a couple of months ago I created a thread here at Chit Chat called "Members Association" which I thought would sink without a trace, but it ended up being very popular. You just never can tell what will peak people's interests and what will not.
ekkostar 05-28-2009, 11:47 PM Most of the boards at Sitcoms Online are dead, I think it's been beaten out by LiveJournal and TV.com. I never really liked LiveJournal for TV shows because the atmosphere is so glossy and phony.
Schmoopie 05-29-2009, 12:08 AM Whenever I see a thread that has no replies, I try to post something so that the author knows that it's been read, but I hear what you are saying. It is frustrating when you expect a lot of responses and don't get very many.
Chocoholic 05-29-2009, 02:36 PM I feel the same way too sometimes. It seems like not many people post over at the boards for my favorite shows. If it wasn't for Chit Chat, I wouldn't bother. Thank God there are so many people here to chat with :)
TripperFan 05-30-2009, 12:20 PM That's why I usually come to chitchat mostly. Again, not every thread gets a response, but there's always something to talk about here. I think you'll find it will help when the other boards are quiet.
Welcome Smartboy!!
Penny Lane 05-30-2009, 04:04 PM The Mama's Family board used to be really active but lately it has been dead. The reason I think is that we have exhausted all topics there after so many years. And yes there are so many other boards like My Space and Face Book. Personally I prefer SO but lately I haven't had a lot of time to spend here and after almost 8 years that I have posted here it gets a little dull. But I still do log on almost everyday but I don't always post. As this was my very first message board I am quite sentimental about it.I just like to keep up with things and people.
JamesG 05-30-2009, 04:59 PM It's been mentioned here before but you really have no way of knowing if your thread will grow or disappear with zero responses.
However, don't be discouraged if your thread doesn't get any responses right away because you never know when your thread might "come back from the dead" so to speak.
I had posted a question on the Hope & Faith board and it wasn't until two months later when someone responded to my question. Then after that a small discussion had emerged.
Another time I asked about That 80's Show in the short-lived forum and the first response wasn't until about a month later.
There will always be new people coming to the forums and eventually someone may stumble upon your post. It could take weeks, months, or years so you never do really know.
Retro4Life 05-30-2009, 06:46 PM I was REALLY curious what this thread was about, given the title... ;)
But yes, I agree. I've started a few threads that went absolutely nowhere, with topics I really wanted feedback on and got bupkis, but hey, that's the way it goes. It's a crap shoot at best, as everyone has noted, and I don't get discouraged. I just keep plugging away; it's the squeaky wheel that gets all the grease, after all! :)
Keep on trying and welcome to the board. :)
Jessica 05-30-2009, 08:41 PM Welcome!
Smartboy 05-30-2009, 10:08 PM I would just like that thank everyone who has responded to this thread for all of their support and encouragement! Thanks a million!
Jessica 05-30-2009, 10:13 PM You're welcome. ^^
