New York, NY (CNS) - Natalie Cole's life-saving kidney transplant surgery had been bittersweet for the singer as she also lost her sister a few hours later.
The Grammy Award winner was comforting her dying sister, Carol "Cookie" Cole, when she got a call from her doctors saying that a kidney from a 22-year-old patient had become available for transplant.
Her younger sister, Timolin Cole, told New York Post's Page Six, "This is all so surreal, and it is devastating."
"Our sister Cookie hadn't been to a doctor in 30 years, and last week she went in and they found a cancerous spot on her lung. They had wanted to start chemo right away, but Cookie said no."
The singer rushed to her ailing sister's side, wanting to comfort her until her last breath. However, she got a phone call from her doctors, saying that they need to start the kidney transplant right away.
Timolin continued, "She said, 'What do you mean? I can't deal with that right now! I'm here with my dying sister!' And they said to her, 'No, ma'am. We've got to do it now. You've got to be at Cedars-Sinai in two hours.'"
"I told her, 'Natalie, this is God's gift, and you've got to go now. Cookie would want this for you.'"
Natalie had her kidney transplant in Los Angeles on Monday. The surgery was a success, but Cookie, her adoptive sister who was actually her cousin, died a few hours later.
