FANNING AS JANE OF VOLTURI IN NEW MOON

From MySpace: "It must be Volturi day today, because Summit just released photos of the powerful coven online. We lucked out on our exclusive: feast your eyes on Dakota Fanning as Jane in "New Moon". When it was announced that the 15-year-old actress had been cast we knew we were in for a treat. Check out the photo of Jane and her bio below, then tell us what you think!"

JANE

Full Name: Jane
Status: Vampire
Group: Volturi Coven
Date of Birth: Unknown
Date of Transformation: Unknown but at a young age
Special Abilities: Ability to inflict debilitating pain with her thoughts

“This may hurt just a little.”

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION:

Jane is a high ranking member of the Volturi Guard. The Volturi were waiting to change her and her brother Alec until she was older, but humans—believing her and her brother to be witches—tried to burn them at the stake, which forced Aro to act while the twins were little more than children. Jane’s experience with the pain of burning alive shaped her into a potent weapon – she developed the ability to inflict immense pain on others with only a look.

VOLTURI

1) The Volturi include: Aro, Caius, and Marcus as the leaders, and then Jane, Alec, Demetri, Felix, Heidi, and several other unnamed members of the guard.
2) The Volturi are similar to a ruling body, and protect the secret of vampires by wiping out any “problems” as vampire law defines.
3) The Volturi live in an ancient Tuscan city called “Volterra”.
4) Aro and Jane’s powers do not work on Bella.

Director Chris Weitz on the Volturi --

"No matter how strange one of the characters is in a work of fantasy, I think you have to approach them as people and then so you start to think, 'They've been around for 2,000 years. How would they interact with one another?' The conclusion was that after 2,000 years you'd probably be more than mildly insane. No matter how cultured or gracious you appear on the surface. And I think that's what Michael Sheen managed to portray as Aro, the head of the Volturi -- on the surface he's terribly gracious, warm, a wonderful host and at the same time he's lethal and frightening.

It's also what Dakota Fanning conveys as Jane. She's innocent looking in appearance but she's absolutely deadly. The first thing I wanted to do was put them in a setting that wasn't Dracula's castle. There have been so many vampire movies and werewolf movies and horror movies where everything has been dark and dreary. Instead, their headquarters is surprisingly light and crisp.

And the characters that they play have a kind of a tactile reality to them in spite of how bizarre their situation is really. The whole point is not to leave Forks, Washington where everything has really been quite realistic and then suddenly go to a location that completely throws you out of the movie. And the set although it's huge and grand and magnificent actually feels like a real place.""

Like it or not Twilight is pretty big, at least for the younger generations today, so this is a pretty big part for Fanning.

I'm not really much of a fan but from what I gather this second one looks like it might be a bit better.

This Volturi clan is composed of some great actors so that's something to look forward to.

I've seen the first movie. It was alright. I meant to say, too, that it's good Cameron Bright found some work. The only thing I really know him from is 'Birth' with Nicole Kidman.
And, yes. Dakota is excellent in everything she plays in.

I knew of Cameron Bright for a while as I've seen him in a few things.

I think I first saw him in Godsend, which is actually a similar film to Birth and they came out back-to-back.

I then saw him in Aaron Eckhart's Thank You For Smoking and he had a brief role in the third X-Men.

He also did this real INSANE movie which is Paul Walker's Running Scared.

I need to watch 'X-Men' three. Would like to watch all of them before 'Wolverine' comes to DVD. I'll keep an eye out for him.

Gratuitous: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson get close in new New Moon photo
Published on Tuesday, Sep 8, 2009 By Katie Hasty

To help bide time between now and the new Twilight Saga: New Moon footage to be revealed at the MTV VMAs, the good folks at Summit have bequeathed unto us another film still from the movie, out Nov. 20.

There is much hemming and hawing to be had over this Bella/Edward photo, which seems to be shot in Bella's bedroom. But what scene? Are Edward's eyes gold or black? Is this pre- or post-Italy?

Well, Kristen Stewart looks pretty, Robert Pattinson looks foxy, so what more could you want...

Meanwhile, MTV is reporting that the place and date for the New Moon premiere has been established: the stars will hit the red carpet at Village and Bruin theaters in L.A. on Nov. 16, same spot as last year.

New Moon ticket pre-sales breaking records
Nov 19, 2009
by Kate Ward

No surprise here: Twilight fans are salivating in preparation to sink their teeth into the franchise’s much-anticipated sequel, New Moon. The film, which will be in theaters Friday, is already attracting record audiences for ticket sellers and venues across the country.

According to Fandango, who notes that their numbers are increasing every second, several thousand New Moon showtimes have sold out, making it the most the company has ever sold prior to a film’s release date. (And, yes, that means the film has even topped The Dark Knight, and movies from both the Harry Potter and Star Wars franchises.) AMC and MovieTickets.com report the same information.

Both the movie chain and the online ticket buying service have said the film has broken records set by Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. (New Moon even nabbed the No. 1 spot on MovieTickets.com’s list of top 10 advance ticket sellers of all time, breaking a nearly five-year-old record set by Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith.

The service is also reporting over 2,150 sellouts for the film, with over 200 in Los Angeles and New York.)

“You could say that Edward and Jacob slayed The Dark Knight and put a spell on Harry Potter to take the advance ticketing crown at Fandango,” says Fandango rep Harry Medved, who also says that 42 percent of 2,000 ticket buyers surveyed are younger than 24 years old.

“Theater owners are continually adding new showtimes and posting them to keep up with fan demand.”

So why have the numbers grown so much since the first film?

Obviously, the tabloid fodder surrounding its three stars — Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner—surely hasn’t hurt matters.

But the first film also drove 55 percent of Fandango’s surveyed ticket buyers to read the Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. Add to that the fact that most of the film’s audience is young and female — MovieTickets.com reports that 87 percent of their ticket buyers are female — and it’s no surprise that the sequel is beating its predecessor.

Hoping to profit even further over the fervor, AMC is planning on offering New Moon collector’s cups, as well as T-shirts, tote bags, and posters at their cinemas.

The fans, however, might not need any additional garb. According to Fandango, ten percent of fans plan on dressing up as characters from the film. And if you’re one of the lucky few who have scored Thursday night tickets — the majority of tickets sold on Fandango — be sure to cover your ears: The company says their stats show 51 percent of fans say they’re prepared to scream as soon as lights go down in the theater. Does that mean we’ll be deaf by the time we get to Eclipse?

Vatican sinks teeth into vampire film Twilight

The Vatican has condemned "The Twilight Saga: New Moon", a Hollywood teen film about vampires and werewolves, as “dangerous” and morally empty.

By Nick Squires in Rome
20 Nov 2009

New Moon is the long-awaited sequel to the highly successful Twilight film of last year, and opens in Britain today.

It tells the story of a vampire who breaks the heart of a high school student, Bella (Kristen Stewart). She finds solace with her werewolf friend, before travelling to Italy to pursue the vampire (Robert Pattinson).

The film, above, contained “an explosive mix” of good-looking protagonists dabbling in the supernatural, said Monsignor Franco Perazzolo of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Culture.

The film’s occult imagery represented a “moral void more dangerous than any deviant message”, he said.

At the Los Angeles premiere of New Moon this week, thousands of fans screamed and waved signs for their favourite actors.

The films are based on a series of books by Stephenie Meyer, which have sold 85 million copies worldwide.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon shattered the midnight opening record, raking in an estimated $26.27 million at 3,514 sites showing the movie starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

The previous benchmark was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which conjured $22.2 million at 3,003 sites for its midnight opening. That accounted for 38 percent of the picture's $58.2 million full opening day.

The full opening day record is held by The Dark Knight, which earned $67.2 million on its first day. Its midnight-only opening was $18.5 million at 3,040 sites.

The first Twilight drew around $7 million for its midnight opening and, by the close of its opening day, it had made $36 million on around 6,000 screens at 3,419 sites.

The picture experienced a tremendous fan rush on that Friday, but Saturday and Sunday did not keep pace, leading to an opening weekend of $69.6 million.

New Moon shows on approximately 8,600 screens at 4,024 sites this weekend.

New Moon Breaks Dark Knight's Single Day Record
Source: BoxOffice, Rick
November 21, 2009

After setting a new record for midnight openings with $26.27 million at 3,514 theaters, Summit Entertainment's The Twilight Saga: New Moon has also broken the record for a single day, earning $71 million on Friday at 4,024 theaters.

The previous single day record of $67.1 million was held by The Dark Knight.

It looks like The Dark Knight's 3-day record of $158 million may be in jeopardy now as well.

Isn't Eclipse do out at the end of June? That's just a 7th month wait - I'd say that's a good timeframe for this franchise. Something tells me that the following movies are definitely not going to top New Moon, though.

Record DVD Sales For New Moon
March 24, 2010

Despite an overall drop in sales of DVDs and Blu-ray discs, numerous exceptions continue to defy the general statistics.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon is the latest, with 4 million copies sold in its first weekend, Summit Entertainment said on Tuesday.

The figure surpassed the 3.8 million sold during the first weekend of home video sales for Summit's original Twilight, which eventually racked up sales of 9.2 million making it the top-selling DVD of 2008.

The figure does not include sales of digital downloads.

In reporting on the results, the Los Angeles Times commented today (Wednesday): "Given the 13 percent decline in U.S. DVD revenue last year ... gaining any ground is something of a victory."
