(Foreboding voice): Remember, this is about the character. :)

Obviously, the actor left, but there must be some explanation for a character disappearing. I wrote this http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3334476/1/Happy_Days_1970What_Happaned_to_Chuck_Cunningham maybe 10 years ago and finally posted it a few years ago despite the fact I didn't write as well then.

It made sense to me, that a tragic death could keep them from mentioning him - my grandparents had that experience with a stillborn baby, but there are a few other options.

@2 makes it even more plausible - but wouldn't there be some residual shock in the season right after his last appearance, even if it was 4-5 months later on the calendar?

3. Remember that we see less than 1% of each week of their lives (1/2 hour out of 168.) He could contact them, etc.. And, since Marion's comment about their 2 children was breaking the 4th wall in the finale, technically it doesn't have to be canon. (Plus, parents can misspeak.)

4. Makes sense condiering that he wasn't in a lot of episdoes int he first 2 anyway, and it would be like the Cunninghams to help someone like this, hence their acceptance of the Fonz.

5. I don't recall the series enough, but...would it be possible for him to just be there but not in the time we don't see? Not as a close family member, perhaps, but if he was a distant cousin or just adopted at 17 or something, say?

He's on the island of misfit TV characters with Judy Winslow (Family Matters), Carl Dixon (Good Times), etc.

I think Fonzie killed him and the Cunninghams were so stunned they decided never to speak of him again. I think they were afraid if they didn't take in Fonzie, he might hurt them as well.

Of course, Fonzie later committed the atrocity of introducing his cousin Chachi to the family -- Arthur Fonzarelli was a cruel man down deep.

One series whose page has not received any posts in years is that of "Nurses"! Well, I think that you could make a case that there was also a character in that show who suffered from "Chuck Cunningham Syndrome"! I remember, at the start of the series there was a dark-haired nurse from Texas. Her name was Sandy. If my memory is correct, by the start of the third and last season, she was history. I do not remember any explanation as to whatever happened to her. What do you guys make of that situation?

Chuck became a drag queen and moved to Chicago where he starred in his own burlesque review for many years before retiring to Key West. The family never recovered from their discovery of his 6" red stilletto heels and went into complete denial that they had ever had an older son.

Not necessary, as we all know that people didn't have sex in the fifties.

That's why I said 'making love' instead of sex, that word didn't exist

I don't think that existed either - everyone slept in twin beds back then, remember??

Anyone whose ever watched Happy Days knows Mr. and Mrs. C never had sex or made love. They did however occasionally "get frisky" with each other!

When I was a kid, I wondered how they had sex since they slept in separate beds.

Me, too. How exactly DID Ritchie Petrie, Little Ricky Ricardo and the Cleaver boys come into being, anyway??

I am going to have to confess that I do not know who Ritchie Petrie is. Any explanation would be most appreciated! I remember Lucy and Ricky's twin beds and so I get the reference to Litte Ricky. I never really got inot "Leave it to Beaver". Did they ever show Mr. and Mrs. Cleaver's beds. Also Mr. and Mrs. Howel slept in twin beds with a night table in between! Maybe this is why it was implied that they never had children! That is, unless you count Thirsten Howel the 4th who magically appeared on the movie with the Globetrotters! Also, in most of the "Flintstone" episodes, both couples had twin beds. This makes it hard to picture Pebbles ever coming into existance! In the episode in which the Rubbles adopted Bam-Bam, it was stongly implied that they could not have children of their own. However, because they had twin beds, it would have been hard for them to try!

There is only one explanation for his disappearance since he was a grown man

"He moved out and got his own place in another state"

Because if he had moved to a place in Milwaukee he would have still been able to visit and if he had went to college he would have came back home to visit.

So he had to move out of state for some kind of Job

He could have moved to the other side of the world and it would still not explain why, in the later episodes the Cunninghams said and did things to imply that they only ever had two children!

Because he got into a huge fight and disprespected Howard and Marion and they decided to not talk to him anymore once he left because he made it clear he wanted no more dealings with his family on his way out

Ritchie Petrie is Rob and Laura's son on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

I think Chuck joint a cult like Scientology and they cut him off completely from his family forever.
