Interesting choices for the soaps!! How come Thorsten Kaye is nominated in the Lead catergory and his on-screen wife Alicia Minshew is in the Supporting category?? Another interesting fact is that all of the Lead Actress nominees are previous Emmy winners - Susan Haskell and Debbi Morgan previously won in the Supporting category. Yet another cool fact is that a real life couple are nominated in the Lead catergories (Thorsten Kaye and Susan Haskell).

It's usually been 5 - when they said daytime drama is a dying breed, they weren't kidding!!

Emmy rules state that no more than 40% of the shows that qualify can be nominated. Passions didn't put itself up for pre-nomination, so the 40% came out of the 8 remaining shows (AMC, ATWT, B&B, DAYS, GH, GL, OLTL, Y&R). 40% of 8 is 3.2.

Here are my picks...

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
ALL MY CHILDREN
DAYS OF OUR LIVES
BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL
Y&R and OLTL were totally robbed. Y&R almost always manages to be a step above the rest, and OLTL was on fire for most of the first half of the year. AMC was no-doubt the best out of these three, especially once Charles Pratt took over as headwriter, even though he leaves much to be desired. Intersting, no matter which soap wins, it should be exciting: DAYS hasn't won this award since 1978, AMC hasn't won it since 1998, and B&B has never won it at all.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR
Thorsten Kaye (Zach, AMC)
Peter Reckell (Bo, DAYS)
Anthony Geary (Luke, GH)
Daniel Cosgrove (Bill, GL)
Christian LeBlanc (Michael, Y&R)
I'm not a fan of Kaye's at all, I wasn't too acquainted with Reckell's work, and Geary is nowhere near deserving of the award. Cosgrove still has a way to go, IMO, but he's a great performer. I pick LeBlanc because he consistently delivers.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS
Debbi Morgan (Angie, AMC)
Maura West (Carly, ATWT)
Susan Flannery (Stephanie, B&B)
Susan Haskell (Marty, OLTL)
Jeanne Cooper (Katherine, Y&R)
Very, very hard decision. Flannery didn't do much in 2008, and Haskell only returned to OLTL part-way through the year. Maura West is always able to turn ATWT crap into gold, but Debbi Morgan has been a non-stop force since the day she returned to AMC. Jeanne Cooper should get a second win next year for her work in 2009.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR
Vincent Irizarry (David, AMC)
Jacob Young (JR, AMC)
Van Hansis (Luke, ATWT)
Bradford Anderson (Spinelli, GH)
Jeff Branson (Shayne, GL)
It has to be Vince. Jacob Young lost his appeal years ago, and Bradford Anderson is only a runt in this category. Van Hansis has let his contempt for ATWT's shoddy writing devalue his performances big time (and I don't blame him - Luke/Noah sucks). Jeff Branson stepped into the role of Shayne on December 1, so him winning would just be wrong. Irizarry has been rocking it since returning to AMC, and it's high time this soap vet gets an Emmy.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Melissa Claire Egan (Annie, AMC)
Alicia Minshew (Kendall, AMC)
Julie Pinson (Janet, ATWT)
Tamara Braun (Ava, DAYS)
Bree Williamson (Jessica, OLTL)
I won't even go into boring analysis. Melissa Egan took Annie from being a boring, boring, boring character in 2006 and 2007 to being one of the most enjoyable parts of AMC during 2008. The closet competitor is Bree Williamson, who turned in some great performances as Jessica on OLTL, but this is Melissa's award.

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTOR
Cornelius Smith Jr. (Frankie, AMC)
Darin Brooks (Max, DAYS)
Blake Berris (ex-Nick, DAYS)
EJ Bonilla (Rafe, GL)
Bryton McClure (Devon, Y&R)
Again, no boring analysis is required. Cornelius Smith jumped into the role of Frankie and ran from day one. He is, no doubt, the greatest new find over at AMC in many, many years. He holds his own with vets Debbi Morgan and Darnell Williams, as well Beth Ehlers, Ricky Paull Goldin, and others. I can't think of any time where I was unimpressed by him. Brooks and Berris might have done some good work, but Bonilla and McClure were both stranded by their soaps in 2008.

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTRESS
Meredith Hagner (Liberty, ATWT)
Rachel Melvin (Chelsea, DAYS)
Kirsten Storms (Maxie, GH)
Julie Marie Berman (Lulu, GH)
Emily O'Brien (Jana, Y&R)
Really a process of elimination here. Hagner has only stepped up her game in 2009, with the storyline with Parker and Liberty getting married, so I wouldn't award her for 2008. Melvin, Storms, and Berman are all interchangeable as far as I'm concerned. Melvin is a tiny step above the shrill GH girls, but I'd give it to O'Brien. She's done better work in 2009, but her '08 performances were enough to earn an Emmy, especially against the other 4.

Very AMC-heavy. I think the AMC people are very deserving, but I think a huge disservice was done to many folks from Y&R and OLTL. Robin Strasser! Jess Walton! Just to name two! Those two shows were generally considered the best of 2008, but they were horribly snubbed.
