http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/27/technology/business-computing/27disk.html?_r=1

General Electric says it has achieved a breakthrough in digital storage technology that will allow standard-size discs to hold the equivalent of 100 DVDs.

Nathaniel Brooks for The New York Times

The storage advance, which G.E. is announcing on Monday, is just a laboratory success at this stage. The new technology must be made to work in products that can be mass-produced at affordable prices.

But optical storage experts and industry analysts who were told of the development said it held the promise of being a big step forward in digital storage with a wide range of potential uses in commercial, scientific and consumer markets.

“This could be the next generation of low-cost storage,” said Richard Doherty, an analyst at Envisioneering, a technology research firm.

The promising work by the G.E. researchers is in the field of holographic storage. Holography is an optical process that stores not only three-dimensional images like the ones placed on many credit cards for security purposes, but the 1’s and 0’s of digital data as well.

The data is encoded in light patterns that are stored in light-sensitive material. The holograms act like microscopic mirrors that refract light patterns when a laser shines on them, and so each hologram’s recorded data can then be retrieved and deciphered.

Holographic storage has the potential to pack data far more densely than conventional optical technology, used in DVDs and the newer, high-capacity Blu-ray discs, in which information is stored as a pattern of marks across the surface of a disc. The potential of holographic technology has long been known. The first research papers were published in the early 1960s.

An anonymous reader alerts us to an interesting development that
Kaspersky Labs stumbled across. They purchased a new M&A Companion Touch
netbook in order to test a new anti-virus product targeted at the netbook
segment, and discovered [0]three pieces of malware on the factory-sealed
netbook. A little sleuthing turned up the likely infection scenario — at
the factory, someone was updating Intel drivers using a USB flash drive
that was infected with a variant of the AutoRun worm. "Installed along
with the worm was a rootkit and a password stealer that harvests log-in
credentials for online games such as World of Warcraft. ... To ensure
that a new PC is malware-free, [Kaspersky] recommended that before users
connect the machine to the Internet, they install security software,
update it by retrieving the latest definition file on another computer,
and transferring that update to the new system, then running a full
antivirus scan."

I haven't actually been watching the show so can't say for myself whether I think she has any talent or not. In your opinion, would you say she does have talent, even if it's being blown out of proportion?

I would disagree on her being old and ugly, though - I hear she's 48, which I don't consider old - I don't even consider 60 to be old. I feel sorry for her at the moment, though, apparently she's being treated in a clinic, seemingly for some mental health issues.

yeah, she is talented, i don't mean to sound like she isn't. just sounds like a typical voice you'd hear at a college recital. i think it's really cool that she made her dreams come true like that despite so many disadvantages, but when people talk about how incredible and amazing her voice is, i just wonder who else they've been listening to, lol. then again i guess most people don't listen to that style of music very often. while this little girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOeWz2k4tTI&feature=related)'s voice isn't as mature as susan's, i think she's much more talented because it's usually damn near impossible to develop that much technical skill by her age. all of her performances have made me teary eyed. it's a shame that she hasn't gotten more public reaction, but it's probably because most people weren't phased by her talent because she was cute.

you know that family guy scene where peter removes the picture frame from the wall, enters a password in the hidden keypad behind it, enters the elevator that appears, goes down, exits into a huge high-tech building, goes through the skeletal identification conveyor belt, goes through the hand and eye identification, walks through a bunch of automatic doors, and gets some guy to assist him in opening the locks to that storage thing all just so he can look at a porn magazine he hid there? that's pretty much what using windows vista is like.

Dear David

This is a friendly reminder to let you know your gym membership expired last week. Your membership is important to us and we would like to take this opportunity to show our appreciation by offering you a 20% discount on your membership renewal. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

All the best, Jeff Peters

Dear Jeff,

Thankyou for your friendly reminder and the kind offer to reduce my membership by twenty percent. I own a calculator but I could not work out how to do percentages on it so have estimated that I save around $372.10 off the normal price of $420.00 - Please confirm that this is correct and I will renew my membership immediately. Also, do I get a Fitness First sports bag with towel and drinking bottle included in the price? I own my own legwarmers and headband.

Hello David

How did you come to that amount? Our half year membership fees are actually $460 but with the 20% discount as an existing member your renewing membership fee would be only $368 for the six months saving you almost $100 off the normal price. We are not Fitness First so do not have those bags.

Dear Jeff

By the power of Greyskull that is a lot of money but I admit to being in desperate need of increasing my body strength. My ten year old child often turns the taps off in the bathroom very tightly and I have to go several days without washing. I feel bad constantly having to ask the lady from next door to come over and loosen them for me, what with her arthritis and limited wheelchair access to my apartment. To be honest, I originally joined your gym with full intentions of attending every few days but after waiting in vain for someone to offer me steroids, I began to suspect this was not going to happen and the realisation that I may have to exercise instead was, quite frankly, horrifying. My aversion to work, along with the fact one of your employees, Justin, was rather rude, telling me to 'lift this', ''push that' dulled my initial enthusiasm of becoming muscular and I stopped attending.

Regards, David.

Hello David

Not sure how to take your email, nobody here would offer you steroids, it is illegal and none of our staff would do this. Justin is one of our most experienced trainers and if you found him rude while he was trying to be helpful and just doing his job then there are plenty of other gyms you could look at joining instead.

Cheers, Jeff

Dear Jeff

Yes, I have noticed that there are many gyms in my area. I assume the low qualification requirements of fitness trainers means that there is an over supply of these buffed but essentially otherwise purposeless professionals. I knew a guy in high school who couldn't talk very well and collected sticks, he used to call the teacher 'mum' and during recess we would give him money to dance. Then sell him sticks to get our money back. He went on to become a fitness instructor so I view gyms as kind of like those factories that provide a community service by employing people with down syndrome to lick stamps and pack boxes. Except with more Spandex obviously.

Dear Jeff

I was, at first, quite surprised at your response; one minute you are inviting me to renew my membership and asking me for money, the next insulting me. After doing a little research however, I have learnt that mood swings are an expected side effect of steroid abuse. As another side effect is a reduction in the size of your penis, this gives you understandable cause to be an angry person. I have also learnt that Spandex contains carcinogenic properties so this does not bode well for yourself and your shiny friends. If I woke up one morning and my penis was a quarter of the size I would probably take my anger out on those around me as well. There are probably support groups or websites that could help you manage your problem more effectively and picture based books available on the subject for people with limited reading skills. When I am angry I like to Listen to music by Linkin Park. The added angst and desire to cut myself works similarly to the way firefighters fight forest fires by burning off sections, effectively canceling each other out and I find myself at peace. I understand that you guys usually listen to Pet Shop Boys or Frankie Goes to Hollywood so this may be worth a try.

Regards, David.

Suzanne Somers angers me. I had a dream once, no...a nightmare once with her in it. She was in the same room as me and I was terrified and kept trying to get away.

i should bring some explosives to my job tomorrow in case my supervisor has me continue doing the same damn thing i've been doing all week (scanning books on the shelves) which is supposed to be split between me and my coworkers. one person shouldn't have to have scanned 7,000 books in three consecutive days.

note to the police or any dingdongs who report me to them: i'm not really going to bring any harmful items to my job tomorrow, kthx.

A few years ago I never thought I'd feel sad about Michael Jackson dying. :o But the more I learned about his life, the more sympathy I had for him. And now it's hard to believe he's really gone. Either way, he was such a huge icon. He really had some great music, too.

When I heard he was doing more concerts I thought maybe he had a chance for some redemption and for the attention to be shifted to something more positive. -_- I think that's what's really saddest to me, he went out being viewed in a negative light by most people, but now that he's gone everyone is remembering him fondly. Poor guy had such a twisted life. I hope he finally has some peace and happiness now.

me too. for a long time, all people usually said about him was what a whacked out, perverted, hopeless loser he was. i made fun of him, but it was always done affectionately/jokingly because his weirdness is what made me like him so much. i'm glad that all i've heard about him since his passing are positive comments about his music legacy, rather than crap about the child molestation charges and whatnot. i'm sure there are some haters out there focusing on that, but at least they're being greatly overshadowed.

Looking for a pool manager for our hotel pool starting in July 2009. You must be certified and have prior experience lifeguarding. You will be in charge of several lifeguards for this position. Contact if interested.

From Mike Partlow to ***********@********.org

Hi, my name is Mike Partlow. I am interested in the position of Pool Manager for your hotel. Here is why I feel I am qualified for the position:

- I am an ex Navy SEAL. Water is my blood.
- I have saved countless lives on 3 different continents. I once saved an entire submarine crew from drowning in the artic.
- I am highly trained in underwater combat. I am prepared to handle any situation that may danger this pool.

I will make sure that this pool is safer than the Hau River during US occupation. Under my watch, pool casualties will be minimal. I will oversee a lifeguard "hellweek" style training program that I will make sure all the lifeguards under my command complete prior to serving for the hotel. Saftey of all pool guests is my top priority. I will also make every pool guest go through an intense underwater survival program before they are allowed to enter the pool.

Nobody drowns on my watch. NOBODY.

I look forward to working with your hotel.

- Mike

From Mark ******** to Me

Mr. Partlow,

Thank you for your application. Unfortunately, you seem a little over-qualified for this position. We already have a program in place for our lifeguards and do not want our guests to have to go through any extreme measures in order to use our facilities.

Thank You,

Mark ********

(Note: Bear spray is basically just pepper spray that you use if you are attacked by a bear.)

Me: “Hello, thank you for calling [outdoor supply store]. How can I help you?”

Customer: “Yeah, um…I bought some bear spray from you earlier today and now my skin is burning.”

Me: “Your skin is burning? Did the bear spray come into contact with your skin?”

Customer: “Of course! I sprayed it all over myself!”

Me: “Did you read the instructions?”

Customer: “No, I thought it was like bug spray.”

Me: “Sir, you’re not supposed to spray it on your skin. You’re supposed to spray it in the bear’s eyes. You should probably go take a shower.”

Customer: “So I can’t repel the bears by putting bear spray on my skin?”

Me: “No, sir…are you sure bear country is the right place for you?"

i don't know if any of you heard about this, but Burger King actually ran a campaign where they would give you a free Whopper if you deleted 10 of your Facebook friends :

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10211898-36.html

the "Whopper Sacrifice" phenomenon, a Burger King ad campaign on Facebook that promised a coupon for a free hamburger if participants deleted 10 people from their friends lists on the social network. It was a wild success: the Facebook application was installed nearly 60,000 times in a matter of days, nearly 20,000 Whopper coupons were sent out, and well over 200,000 Facebook friends were deleted. Facebook members even created unofficial groups, offering to let other members add them as friends and then delete them for Whopper Sacrifice purposes.

Yeah I just really feel bad for Michael. I don't know what he did or didn't do or whatever, but his life just sounds like it was hell. He got so much crap from his own father let alone the rest of the world, and as crazy as he might appear, he's always seemed to me to really mean well and have a big heart. I don't know. I think he's a child that never grew up because his actual childhood was tarnished. That obviously really affected him. Poor guy.

Which of the following behaviors exemplifies self-respect?

a. Tim is proud of his accomplishments, recognizes and enjoys what he has done well, and does not need the recognition of others to feel good about those accomplishments.
b. Jane constantly seeks ways to prove herself, not acknowledging accomplishments she has already achieved.
c. Mary sets unrealistic goals for herself in order to challenge herself to greater accomplishment.
d. Norman puts up with a significant amount of verbal abuse from his friends.

 that made me laugh myself to tears for some reason.
