Thursdays

Kitchen Nightmares

Fox Fall is usually "yuck." So that is how I predict they will go. Is that how I would have done the schedule? Absolutely not. It never goes the way you seem you think it would go.

Your schedule sounds good, Pavan. Knowing FOX, though, they could do anything for fall. January is pretty predictable at FOX, though.

Definitely gameshows on Fridays again. Til Death should probably go to Sundays at 7pm, as they're nothing else but burnoff. FOX is airing Lie to Me repeats Thursdays at 8pm in late summer, with Bones repeats back on Wednesdays at 8pm - could this be a sign of what they'll be doing in the fall?

Kitchen Nightmares I'd probably leave on Thursdays at 9pm. It isn't a winner in total viewers by no means, but with CSI declining, it could definitely snatch up some of that demo, the same demo Hell's Kitchen always does wonderfully in.

I don't think Lie to Me will be moved. I think it does well enough on Wednesday and Thursday is always a weird night for Fox with stupid shows like Bones and in the spring they usually need to work in Hell's Kitchen so Lie to Me would probably eventually be moved if it was rescheduled in the fall for Fox's experimental day (Thurs.). It won't be moved to Mondays either since 24 and House do so well for them--- they ain't gonna fix it if it ain't broken. That basically leaves only Tues. and Wed. open for Lie to Me--- and Tues. is another of Fox's experimental days due to Idol's mid-season takeover. Wednesday is Lie to Me's day, Monday is reserved for House and 24, and Tues. and Thurs. are usually reserved for horrible shows that Fox knows will be canceled my mid-season or moved to a day like Friday to make room for its big money-maker, Idol. My one sincere hope is that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles isn't replaced by a new stupid comedy (like Til' Death) just because it's low-budget and we all know that Fox really doesn't care about the new shows they introduce--- the only reason they greenlight some of those stupid comedies or **** like the Osbournes Reloaded is to fill a timeslot. Terminator wasn't a stupid filler show, it was a deep exploration of human surivival and hope, a story of how a mother and son cope in a constantly changing world, and a fantastic action-adventure show as well. I'm still holding on to a little bit of hope for its renewal, but let's face it, we're dealing with Fox here and it's probably as good as terminated. But I will be fuming if Fox replaces it with one of the aforementioned filler shows.

Does anyone else think that Fox should give Terminator and Dollhouse another shot?

I absolutley don't understand what do you do with Fringe starting january ?
"Fringe will leave in January". Do you think the show will be cancelled ???
Because I don't think FOX will have aired the full season before January !

And if FOX announced 22 new episodes for Fringe but plans to cancel it in january, this is stupid.

Pavan

I just don't think Fringe will last 22 episodes next season. Just because 22 episodes are ordered, doesn't mean all 22 will air or even produced if the show starts off flat. If it is subpar, Fringe will for sure be moving in January, if not totally pulled.

I agree. Fringe is a bust after Idol. But, it would look much better if it can maintain or grow out of that 9 million in the fall.

It looks like Fox might renew Dollhouse afterall. I'm stunned.

Surprise: Fox leaning toward 'Dollhouse' renewal
In an underdog comeback that blows away NBC’s will-they-or-won’t-they hand-wringing over “Chuck” (psst, they almost certainly will), sources say Fox is -- and this could change before Monday's upfront presentation -- leaning toward bringing back Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse” next fall.

The low-rated Friday night show was last seen given up for dead by the media in a field somewhere.

But its DVR numbers are strong, online streaming is strong. It’s a sci-fi show, which tend to bring in nice ancillary revenue such as DVD sales for sister-company studio 20th TV. And it’s said that Fox execs rather like the series, especially the latter half of the season. Besides, a show airing in the fall on Fox is a bit like running in midseason on most networks -- it’s not their strongest part of the year and maybe ... maybe ...

All right, fine.

A “Dollhouse” pickup would be stunning, and tough to explain based on the show's ratings, which concluded at a 1.0 among adults 18-49. Maybe Fox executives are just sick of being vilified on Whedonesque.com. Maybe Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly, who wisely renewed “The Office” at NBC after a disastrous first season, knows something we don’t.

Either way, we love that the “Dollhouse” decision is turning from a presumed demise into an 11th-hour negotiation. To paraphrase Hannibal Lecter: The broadcast world is a more interesting place with Joss Whedon in it.

What’s to talk about?

Well, money, of course.

Fox wants “Dollhouse” cheaper.

All the networks want every show cheaper this year, if they can haggle it.

Which night "Dollhouse" would air on is unclear, though hopefully the series will not return to Friday. It's tough to see "Dollhouse" surviving a summer hiatus followed by a return to the Friday gulag.

Fox's official decision could go down to the wire before Monday; will post updates this weekend if the winds shift, but as of Friday morning ... the rough draft plan of Fox's fall includes Joss Whedon's show.

A ray of hope for Dollhouse at least. But Pav, what I don't understand is why Fox moved Terminator to Fridays in the first place. It sometimes seems like they WANTED the show to fail. They NEVER promoted it... they NEVER took advantage of the fact that a new movie was coming out until the night of the season finale when they aired the sneak preview of Salvation, and they sent it to Friday nights, where not even shows as bad as 'Til Death are sentenced to live out the rest of their existences. Terminator was a good, quality show that could've been a gold mine for Fox... but nobody seemed to care since Fox didn't seem to care. But I believe numbers for the season finale were pretty good compared to the rest of the latter half of the season. Terminator always does good amongst DVR ratings and the Season 2 DVD set already hit the top 100 on Amazon (at one point it was number 12). If Dollhouse has a shot at renewal, I think Fox should realize the err of their ways and give Terminator a better shot on a BETTER night. Interest for the Terminator mythos is just now peaking with Salvation only a week away. I just don't understand Fox--- probably never will.

It looks like Dollhouse got renewed.

Surprise: Fox RENEWS 'Dollhouse'
UPDATED: In a stunning move, sources say Fox has renewed Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse” for next fall.

The official announcement will not be made until Monday at the network's upfront presentation, but sources confirm a deal has been struck for another 13 episodes. Fox plans to continue the show on Fridays next fall.

The low-rated series was last seen given up for dead by the media in a field somewhere.

But the show's DVR numbers are huge (averaging a 40% bump), online streaming is strong. It’s a sci-fi show, which tend to bring in strong ancillary revenue such as DVD sales for sister-company studio 20th TV. And it’s said that Fox execs rather like the series, especially the latter half of the season. Besides, a show airing in the fall on Fox is a bit like running in midseason on most networks -- it’s not the network's strongest part of the year and maybe ... maybe ...

All right, fine.

The move is tougher to explain than most, especially based on the show's ratings. A “Dollhouse” pickup is a shock, an underdog comeback that blows away NBC’s will-they-or-won’t-they hand-wringing over “Chuck” (psst, they almost certainly will). In fact, "Dollhouse" might very well be the lowest-rated in-season scripted drama to ever get a renewal on a major broadcast network. Almost certainly if based on where the show concluded -- a 1.0 among adults 18-49.

Basically this is a case of a bunch of minor decision-making factors successfully ganging up on the biggest factor (ratings). In addition to DVD sales, streaming and DVR influences, Fox received some serious budget concessions from 20th TV and Whedon to continue the show, with 20th now shouldering a greater portion of the load.

Another factor was the show's unaired 13th episode, which Whedon shot on a shoestring budget for the "Dollhouse" first season DVD set. Whedon presented it to the network as an example of how "Dollhouse" can achieve a high-quality production with a lesser budget.

The renewal also means Fox is bringing back all three of its freshman dramas for a second season -- "Fringe," "Lie to Me" and "Dollhouse" -- which is a nice boast in challenging year for broadcasters.

Along with NBC renewing low-rated "Friday Night Lights," and strongly considering modestly performing "Chuck," and the CW stations considering bringing back very weakly rated "Reaper," there's seeming trend this spring toward networks looking beyond live-viewing ratings when contemplating the fate of shows with passionate fanbases that they can monetize in non-traditional ways.

Last year, in the wake of CBS canceling fan favorites "Jericho" and "Moonlight," the sense was that vocal minorities could no longer sway the suits.

This year, cult TV shows have been like creatures in a George Romero movie; you can never trust that they're dead.

Fox trots 'Dance' into fall
Hoofer showcase may partner with 'Glee'
By Nellie Andreeva and James Hibberd

May 15, 2009, 11:18 PM ET
Fox is dancing into the fall, adding an in-season edition of summer reality series “So You Think You Can Dance” to its fall schedule, sources said.

The network and producer 19 Entertainment this week started casting for the first- ever fall “Dance.”

Fox may be summoning the hit summer series to fall duty to help launch its heavily promoted new music comedy series “Glee.”

“Dance’”s performance show is rumored to stay on Wednesday, leading into “Glee.”

“Bones,” whose renewal is pending, is expected to stay on Thursday, possibly paired with “Dance” result show. “Hell’s Kitchen,” may also return to the Thursday 9 p.m. time slot where it performed so well this season, perhaps in midseason.

Newly renewed midseason drama “Lie To Me” could get one of the cushiest Fox slots -- Monday 9 p.m., following powerhouse “House.”

“Fringe” may stay on Tuesday, paired with hot new comic book drama “Human Target.”

Meanwhile, “Dollhouse” -- which the network just renewed for another season -- is expected to stay on Fridays.

Sunday's animated lineup will feature newcomer "Cleveland" joining veterans "The Simpsons," "Family Guy" and "American Dad."

Meanwhile, newly picked up live-action comedies "Sons of Tucson" and "Brothers" are expected to be held back until midseason.

Fox will announce its official schedule Monday at its upfront presentation to advertisers in New York.

'Bones' renewed for fall
Pact for show's fifth season held up on license fee
By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER

Fox and sister 20th Century Fox TV have finally finalized a deal to bring "Bones" back for fall.

In what has become a common tale this upfront season, pact to renew "Bones" was held up as both sides haggled a new license fee for the show (Daily Variety, May 15).

"Bones" is entering its fifth season this fall -- the year in which dramatic license fee increases are usually triggered, as studios look to recoup their early costs.

Since both Fox and 20th are News Corp. companies, the price isn't as big an issue as what it means for the show's profit participants. Given that self-dealing lawsuits are commonplace, the studio and network wanted to make sure a deal was in place that could be signed off by everyone.

The "Bones" deal repped the toughest negotiation between studio and network so far in the new News Corp. reporting structure. With the departure of Peter Chernin, who had overseen both sides, the studio and network now have separate reports.

"Bones" exec producer Hart Hanson broke the news of the show's renewal via his Twitter account.

Hanson, who said he had received news of the pickup from a Fox exec, had earlier expressed confidence that a deal would be made.

"Business is business," he said. "It takes a while to get all of the major players on the same page. Tough business."

"Bones" was never really in danger of not returning. Show has helped Fox finally develop a scripted series pulse on Thursday nights for the first time in years.

But 20th did do its due diligence in recent weeks, contacting other networks to see how much they would pay for "Bones" -- under the assumption that they were looking for the show's fair market value.

Pavan, I don't understand the 14th season of King of the Hill. It sounds like 20th Century Fox renewed it for two more episodes, but Fox the network canceled the series. So would those episodes air in syndication, or would King of the Hill show up randomly on Fox at one point again and burn those two off? And then there are two leftover episodes from this season. I just don't get it.

The animated comedies produce seasons in advance. There is no 14th season. The 13th season (which actually started last February!) is still completing its episode order and they have 18 total episodes. So I think about 6 will remain to air after tonight. You'll see these burned-off in the fall, likely in the 7pm hour when there is no NFL overrun. I don't think you'll see these 6 episodes in syndication first. These 18 season 13 episodes will probably not be available in syndication utnil likely all 18 has aired.

Oh, okay. That's just so weird. So next year if they air they will be "new" episodes, but they are really old ones that are just unaired? For some reason it just seems really odd.-lol Do they do that with the other cartoons too?

I don't understand why FOX would rather air Dollhouse instead of Don't Forget the Lyrics or 5th Grader. They get better total viewers, a better demo, and they're much less expensive to produce. It makes no sense to me at all.

I totally agree, and there is no way Dollhouse should have come back. It was barely getting 3 million viewers by the end!!!!!

I think FOX will struggle in the fall like usual, but I do think the lineup save Dollhouse will be a bit more solid this time around. I'm not sure what to think of Dance being on though.

I think SYTYCD is going to get crushed airing in the fall. There's a reason it's a summer show, and not a fall show. Why do we need it airing in the fall? Glee can still be successful and air with something else. It's gonna be bad if it fails miserably airing Tuesday night, because essentially, they're bringing in Dance to pair with Glee. That could ruin the entire fall lineup for them if it's a bust.

Dollhouse is so strange. Why does FOX need this? The only reason I can see them renewing it is to air with Idol in midseason. But to pickup for 13 episodes and burn them off on Fridays again? Makes no sense to me.

From THR:

The latest we're hearing, below. Similar to what we posted Friday, with the addition of "So You Think You Can Dance (http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/so-you-think-you-can-dance-1/EP00751700)" remaining the big headline, though taking a more "American Idol (http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/american-idol/EP00552080)"-like Tuesday-Wednesday path here. Also, "Human Target" on Fridays (a tad surprising, if true). All sources seem to agree Fox is holding its comedy pickups until midseason. The official schedule will be announced tomorrow.

Monday -- "House (http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/house/EP00688359)," "Lie to Me"
Tuesday -- "SYTYCD," "Fringe (http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/fringe/EP01059103)"
Wednesday -- SYTYCD" results, "Glee"
Thursday -- "Bones," "Kitchen Nightmares (http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/kitchen-nightmares/EP00932409)" (with "Past Life" taking over after baseball)
Friday -- "Human Target," "Dollhouse (http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/dollhouse/EP01059106)"
Sunday -- "Brothers" at 7:30 out of NFL; "Cleveland" at 8:30, all others unchanged

Other broadcast schedules still blurry, though last week DHD posted a potential NBC lineup.

Human Target on Fridays? Huh? Lie to Me is going to get destroyed in the tough Monday at 9 timeslot. Kitchen Nightmares, blah. Brothers at 7:30 on Sunday?

This schedule will be a complete disaster if Dance bombs and hurts Fringe/Glee in the process.

Very similar to the other one, only 2 slots are different.

and it still sucks. Kitchen Nightmares on Tuesday at 8? That will do Fringe no favors. Lie to Me is going to get killed in that slot and I still don't get Human Target on the dead night known as Friday.

Pavan
05-17-2009, 07:59 PM
There is also a version going around with the exact same content as version #1 BUT Human Target Tuesdays at 9 instead of Fringe. Fringe would be Fridays at 8 to try and help Dollhouse.

I personally think we will see version #1, or something very similar to it. Could Fringe go to Fridays? I am not sure, but if it does 60-70% of its current numbers there, it would be a good move.

This schedule is going to be a disaster if true. Having Dance in fall is a complete disaster in its own. Does FOX not have faith in Glee? It can still air with Kitchen Nightmares, or Fringe, or the comedies, and still do well. It all just seems so pointless to me.

Kitchen Nightmares should be Fridays, it's that simple. The show isn't a ratings powerhouse, and it does good in the demo, and would be perfect for Fridays. Why waste Human Target on Fridays? And what I don't get, why waste Brothers Sundays at 7:30???

Mr. Television
05-17-2009, 09:14 PM
Nothing can help Dollhouse. If Fringe goes to Friday, it will die. It will never get those viewers back that they have and it will never grow. Look what happened to Prison Break when it moved to Friday and it had a built in fan base. If Human Target premieres there, it is D.O.A. They are wasting two good timeslots on a summer reality show. We already have DWTS on in the fall. Does Fox really think they can compete with that?

JulieSomoski
05-17-2009, 09:40 PM
And that goes back to the question why not stick the gameshows back on Fridays? I just don't get it. Kitchen Nightmares would be another good option. They're cheap programming, and their ratings, for Friday, would be considered good. Pavan, you said if Fringe could retain 60% of its audience on Fridays, that would be good. Not sure if you realize, but 60% of Fringe's audience is less than 6 million viewers. For the costs, that would be terrible.

Same goes for Human Target. it goes on Fridays, it dies. And then there's Dollhouse, a pointless pickup in all directions. And SYTYCD - it won't be able to compete. It doesn't make sense.

Brent88
05-17-2009, 11:42 PM
When is FOX going to figure out they will never have success with sci-fi dramas on Friday? If Fringe goes there it will be dead by midseason(the highest-rated new show in Adults 18-49). Stupid idea! Fringe is also way too expensive for Fridays, have you seen the show? LOL, they made a fake but real looking World Trade Center for the finale. They should have just canceled Dollhouse and put 5th Grader and Kitchen Nightmares there and been done with it. I don't get it.

Pavan
05-17-2009, 11:47 PM
Fox doesn't want reality on Fridays. They are going scripted and are not giving up on the night, which I like but Dollhouse (and Fringe or Human Target) is not the answer, I agree. Honestly, 5th Grader did terrible in the demo on Friday. Its viewership was OK, but the demo was around 1.1-1.3, which Fox did even with Prison Break and Sarah Connor (which is officially dead now).

Pavan
05-18-2009, 01:27 AM
Didn't get any other leaked schedules as of yet, so what we saw with the two earlier scenarios is what we'll get it seems.

The Hell's Kitchen thing is interesting. It launches July 21, and it will last 14 straight weeks (since the premiere is two-hours). That will have it through Oct. 13. So whatever comes after Hell's Kitchen on Tuesdays at 8pm won't launch at the earliest until Oct. 20.
And when is the 2009 World Series? Game 1 airs Wednesday, Oct. 28 and if necessary game 7 is Thursday, November 5, 2009. The only off days are Friday, Oct. 30 and Tuesday, Nov. 3, bearing any weather cancelations. November 2009 sweep starts Oct. 29, so all the World Series games will be in Nov. sweep this year except game one. So it just seems to me that SYTYCD will not be Tuesdays, and looks more of a Wed-Thurs thing. Unless they go Tuesdays at 9.

Just something to ponder about Fox before we get the schedule.

Last year Fox announced their schedule at 11am, which is CBS style late. Hopefully that is not the case later today. Last year it was a Thursday though, but now Fox goes first on a Monday so I'm hoping it is bright and early tomorrow. I'll be on the look out bright and early anyway...no sleep week!

Hmmmm, I totally forgot about the World Series and how it screws everything up.

Hell's Kitchen running into October is also interesting.

Speaking of days for each upfront, I'm glad it's a little different this year. Every year as long as I can remember NBC went on Monday(except last year when they did a dumb thing and announced the schedule in April) and FOX on Thursday. Maybe ABC or CBS can change dates next year. How is it set anyway?

Arghhh, Fox just told me 11am ET again for the release this year. At least ABC will be bright and early tomorrow.
