R&B music is really terrible now and i'm tired of all these damn boring love songs. Where's the party jams at? That's why i listen to only old school r&b artists that did party jams back in the day. I think after the 90's, r&b started to get very boring. I miss these artists.

Kool And The Gang
The Gap Band
Cameo
Zapp
Dazz Band
Con Funk Shun
Slave
Raydio(Ray Parker Jr used to be with them)
The Commodores
Midnight Star
Lakeside
The Deele(Babyface used to be with them before he went solo and did boring love songs LOL)
The Jacksons
The Isley Brothers
Ready For The World
Earth Wind And Fire
New Edition
Bell Biv Devoe
Bobby Brown
Guy
Tony Toni Tone(Raphael Saddiq's solo albums are boring)

I forgot to mention The Time. Morris Day and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis used to be with them. Jesse Johnson who was also in the group did some solo albums. He used to always wear pink LOL. His first solo album is real good. I didn't like his 2nd solo album. He did a song with Sly Stone on his 2nd album called Crazay. That song is alright.

Add to that list Donny Hathway. I LOVE his music and he had a voice that could melt butter. THERE was a musician who had TRUE heart and soul in his music. :rip: Donny.

I don't like r&b singers that do a lot of love songs. Donny had a nice voice but he sang too many love songs and not enough jams. He did one jam with Roberta Flack i like called Back Together Again. Luther Vandross is one of my favorite singers. His voice was so nice. I also forgot to mention Chic. Chic did a lot of jams. I like their first album Chic a lot and i like their Risque album that had the classic Good Times. Did you know Luther sang background for Chic on their first album? He's singing on a song on their first album called You Can Get By If You Try. James Taylor of Kool And The Gang disappointed me with his solo albums because he had too many love songs and not any jams. Johnny Gill is another artist that disappointed me. He has some jams on his self titled album that came out in 1990 that has Rub You The Right Way and Wrap My Body Tight songs but he sang too many love songs and not enough jams. Levert's Just Coolin album is real good. They got some jams on there but they sang too many love songs also and that's why i didn't listen to most of their albums and Gerald Levert's solo albums even though they were good singers. RIP Gerald and Sean Levert. I know their dad Eddie is hurting over their deaths.

Back Together Again is a good song, and Roberta & Donny did another terrific uptempo jam called You Are My Heaven (which was co-written by Stevie Wonder). But you're right, they don't make artists like them anymore. :(

If you want good R&B go back to the 1960's.

There is some good 70's R&B (Donny Hathaway, Al Green, The Staple Singers, Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes), but a lot of that was really bland.

I am beginning to think that R&B music may have died with Otis Redding.

You also forgot to mention Parliament-Funkadelic. Funk on top of funk.

That is my jam! I have the CD in my car, and I always bump it when I get on the expressway. That's a good song to play when you're on the highway. LOL

Isiah, I agree with you 100%! Today R&B is lacking substance and originality. I LOVE old school R&B! It will always have a place in my heart. The reason why is because it was always on in my household when I was a kid. My family and friends jammed to all the music back in the day.

The thing that gets me about todays music is that new schoolers will sample an old school song, and get much more credit for it! And many of these new schoolers don't use true talent.........playing instruments.

I like all genres of music. But lately I really don't care for the newer R&B.

Indeed!! While I liked the later duets Roberta did with Peabo Bryson and Maxi Priest, the magic that she had with Donny was simply not there. They were definitely a force to be reckoned with - but sadly Donny seemed to be in her shadow. :(

Here are Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, taken from their first duet album (1972, I believe). Donny's version of "For All We Know" (with him on vocals and Roberta on piano) alone is worth the price of admission. It's one of my all time favorite songs. :D

LOL@Roberta's afro in that picture hahahahahahahahahahahaha. My dad used to have that duet album by them you posted a picture of. I think the song Where Is The Love is on that album. My mom loves Roberta Flack. She bought a cd by her that has a remake of It Might Be You on it and Roberta did a better remake than the original version which was sang by a white group. I don't know their name. GarfieldKool you're right about Parliament/Funkadelic. I forgot about them. They made so many jams. Flashlight, Aqua Boogie, Not Just Knee Deep, Bop Gun(Endangered Species)songs are my favorites by them. Can't forget about George Clinton's Atomic Dog song. That song is the party anthem. That song will get any party started. I also forgot about Mtume, One Way, The SOS Band. I can't believe Mtume only made a few albums. I got 2 of their albums called Juicy Fruit and You, Me And He. Those albums are very good. Juicy Fruit song is my jam. You, Me And He is a nice love song. James Mtume used to produce for Stephanie Mills and Phyllis Hyman.

I've mentioned this before but for all of you Donny Hathaway fans get his live LP from 1972, its amazing and his version of "Whats Going On" blows away Marvin Gaye's version in my book.

Also for some serious R&B music I got two words for you: Stax Records

I dont think I need to say anything else.

Yes, I love Donny's version of What's Going On, but I still like Marvin's the best - mainly because it has the saxophone, and Donny's version doesn't. Oh well - to each his own.

What I miss is Issac Hayes, Barry White, and Lou Rawls.

They brought good R&B music. The last guy who was like that was Andre 3000. (Hopefully he can bring it back).

The sax part on "What's Going On" was not intentional. Sax man Eli Fontane was playing some warm up rifs and Marvin heard it, and liked it and recorded it. Fonte told Marvin he was ready and Marvin told him "you're done".

That's what I liked best about it - sometimes the best things are the unintentional things. :D
