Kiefer Sutherland was all smiles on the Met red carpet Monday night, but according to several reports he hurt and maybe broke a designer's nose hours later at an after party.

According to the New York nightlife website Guest of a Guest, which says it has three separate confirmations of the incident:

Apparently Keither [sic] Sutherland HEAD BUTTED Jack McCollough so hard that he BROKE the designer's nose!

While guests like Mary-Kate Olsen, and Kirsten Dunst looked on, the actor apparently was upset over Brooke Shields.

McCollough is one half of design duo Proenza Schouler and as of noon Tuesday, says Guest of a Guest, was still in the hospital.

Tuesday night TMZ also reported on the story, saying a police report was taken and the fracas is under investigation:

We're told witnesses say the alleged victim -- Proenza Schouler designer Jack McCollough -- allegedly knocked Brooke Shields over and Kiefer saw it happen. The witnesses say Kiefer went over to the man and told him to apologize to her. At that point they say McCollough pushed Kiefer and the actor responded with a headbutt.

Sutherland, 42, and Shields, 43, go way back, having costarred together in 1996's "Freeway." Unfortunately for Sutherland, reports TMZ, he is still on probation from a previous DUI so this could be bad for his legal situation.

Meanwhile man-about-town Derek Blasberg tweeted [UPDATE: HE DELETED THE TWEET] at 2:30 am:

Scandal: what young designer just got headbutted at the SubMercer by Keifer Sutherland. Over Brooke Sheilds!

Shields: 'Sutherland Situation Has Blown Out Of Control'
14 May 2009 2:55 PM, PDT

Brooke Shields has blasted the media for the intense press coverage of Kiefer Sutherland's clash with fashion designer Jack McCollough, insisting the whole incident has spiralled out of control.

Sutherland has been charged with third-degree assault after allegedly head-butting the Proenza Schouler designer at a Met Costume Institute Gala afterparty in New York on 5 May.

The 24 actor claims he was protecting longtime pal Shields' honour when the bust-up occurred, reportedly leaving McCollough with a broken nose.

A comment purportedly issued by Shields' representative surfaced immediately after the news hit the headlines, suggesting it was Sutherland who instigated the violent argument.

The statement read: "Nothing happened to her. Jack did nothing inappropriate. It's not clear what caused Kiefer to do what he did."

It later emerged the comments were bogus and did not come from Shields' camp - with the actress instead coming to Sutherland's defence.

A new statement, released on Monday, read, "(Shields) was bumped into by Jack McCollough and Kiefer Sutherland became concerned... Kiefer has always been a gentleman in her company."

The bizarre situation sparked a media furore, and Shields is disappointed at the "unfortunate" turn of events.

She says, "I'm never shocked anymore about anything that happens or anything in the press, it's just the access that the press has, the fact that it blows out and affects all of our lives, it's unfortunate, really unfortunate."

Sutherland, who is currently under a probation order in Los Angeles relating to a 2007 conviction for driving under the influence (DUI), faces a $1,000 (£660) fee and up to a year in jail if convicted of the third-degree assault charge.

He is due to be arraigned on 22 June at Manhattan Criminal Court.
