View Full Version : Not A Good Night At All: UPDATE On My Cat's Situation

So I'm at the dinner table, finished dinner and talking- hanging out with my Uncle who visited us & my Grandmother who lives with my Dad and I. All of a sudden I hear a loud screaming noise, like somebody cursing in the apartment we rent up stairs. I knew something bad was going on. The voice and screams turn out to be from my Dad. I never saw what happened, except for at the end but let me tell you what happened so bad tonight, so I don't confuse you, and so I can get help with figuring this out.

Ok so I hear the screams, look out our front window and see a dog holding something in my mouth. My Dad was screaming for my Uncle to come out, as in he needs help in something and fast. He goes out and I can't figure out what's going on, but we have 3 pets like I said earlier in the interview thread- 2 cats and a dog.

My uncle explains that my Dad was going outside (he has a door at his end of the house and we have a front and back door in my grandmother's part of the house). My Dad opened the screen door and had it held open with his foot & I guess Shadow, a black cat I have was behind him at the time. All of a sudden, a dog comes around the corner of the front of the house and goes in between my Dad's legs and gets the cat. So my Dad goes to attack the dog with the cat in it's mouth. The dog, it sounds like- shaked the cat around in his mouth 5-6 times, maybe even 7 times. My Uncle and Dad were hitting, kicking the dog- to try and hurt it & to get our cat out of it's mouth, as the dog is still shaking the cat around. Finally, the 2 guys get bats and shovels and beat the dog, the dog is bleeding and they get Shadow out of Blue's mouth (Blue is the dog's name) and Shadow escapes and runs immediately, but we don't know where. Blue sits down on the grass I guess to catch it's breath then runs away as well, probably not after the cat again but to escape from the scene in general- I hope he didn't get the cat again, after they left. I'm outside in the pouring rain looking for the cat...looking to find where the dog is, to make sure it doesn't have my other cat, or shadow again, and to make sure the cops get this dog and put it to sleep. The dog had been creeping around our property before, probably smelling the cat(s) and trying to attack her or Snickers (my other cat)- like he did today. The dog lives behind us, to the right of my aunt who lives directly behind our house. I'm a mess. I love my cats and Shadow is a good kitty. She gets scared when we put her in the kennel for vet visits, to get shots & everything else ever so often. So I can imagine her crying, being in a kennel scared- times 100 being attacked and thrown around by the dog- poor kitty :(. What do you think of this situation? I hate to put her down, and I hope she's safe, ok and not suffering either for that matter. We can't find her and she ran away quick or else we'd take her to the vet ASAP. I'm just in a bad mood and their are good people to talk to on here, and animal lovers- Monika, Janice- what do you think, if you don't mind me asking or putting this question and incident out?

I love you Shadow- please come home, and please be ok :(

that is horrible - i am so sorry Kyle

this is one of the reasons all of my kitties are inside cats.

I think you should probably call the police and make an official report - this dog is dangerous and this should not be taken lightly.

I pray that your kitties come out of this alright :(

Thanks Rob, I truly appreciate your kindness and help.

And yeah, Jim our next door neighbor was said to have called the police- I hope it's true and I hope he did...I hope they get this dog.

And good idea.. My cats were and always have been inside cats, except for strays a few years ago that we had, that went in and out all the time. We just started letting them out the past year or year and a half, but once they come back in, they're inside 80% of the time, at least...

but thank you rob- i hope he's out away & that she's ok and not suffering... and that she comes back too, it sucks...i love pets almost like family- they are family.

The dog needs to be confined at home, There should be leash laws where you live.

Shadow needs to be found ASAP, He could have internal injuries from the shaking.

If I had been in that situation I probably would've killed the dog.

She is so dark she blends in with everything. I don't know where to specifically look, besides under cars- in yards etc. I hope she comes back but do you think she has a shot at living with those injuries sustained? I know you weren't in the situation and don't know much, but I am hoping she does. And I think they were trying to kill it too. I know I went out trying to kill it, but I had nothing on me so it wouldn't of been a smart idea anyway.

and yeah, i hope the police come and a report is filed. this is bullsh*t, and yeah those rules are around.

First, the owner of this dog needs to be contacted A.S.A.P. It is obvious that there is something wrong with this animal to conduct such a heinous against a cat (or any other smaller animal). Also, I hope that you are able to find shadow and soon; she is probably hiding because she is still scared; she will probably come out of her hiding place once she becomes hungry. Mean while you are in my thoughts. I would be madder than hell, if someone's freaking dog attacked my cat...If you do contact the owner of this pest, make sure that he is responsible in paying for Shadow's vet bills..Also, if the police are involved, make sure that you receive copies of the police report, and also receive copied reports on other witnesses in the crime. So, the idiot who owes this beast is responsible in paying for any damage(s) bestowed upon your cat...

Since Blue was being allowed to run loose with leash laws in place then the owner is responsible for any vet bills. Blue probably needs medical attention as well. My guess is that Shadow probably didn't go far at all and some cats will eventually come home if hurt and if they're able. You said she ran away after escaping from the dog so that's a good sign that her legs are ok. Put some food and water outside and see what happens. Right now it's a wait and see situation.

That's sad. I hope you find your cat and he's OK. That dog owner should be held accountable. Responsible dog owners do not allow their dogs to run loose like that.

this is terrible, kyle. :( you and shadow will be in my thoughts. keep looking for him. something needs to be done about the dog so that he doesn't hurt any other animals. i'm a huge cat lover and i'm always afraid of something like this happening to my baby, because she absolutely loves the outdoors.

That's a horrible story. I had a hard time even reading it. Cats do retreat when they're in distress, and suddenly show up when they feel safe. Perhaps you could put a few flyers up in the neighborhood, for Shadow. The poor sweetie. It breaks my heart to think of where she is. Then again, she could be in a loving home right now, to people who will gladly turn her over to you. The owners of that dog need a lesson in the law. That's one bold dog too. To practically come in your house and grab Shadow right in front of your Dad, is just nuts. Sorry you're going through this, Kyle. I'll pray, and please keep us posted.

I'm very sorry Kyle. I hope you find Shadow. :( I used to have problems with stray dogs all the time back in NC. One time a dog jumped our fence and got our dog pregnant. Another time a stray dog bit my sister. People that let dogs run loose shouldn't be able to own any dogs.

I hate when people let their pets become that horrible. Not only is it a shame for the animal, but any other animals it might hurt. I'm so sorry what happened to your cat, Kyle, and I hope you find him soon. I agree with Janice, put up some flyers, whatever you can do. Poor kitty. :(

UPDATE and good news: We FOUND Shadow...she was under the back ramp. We have a back door, that has a ramp that leads to the ground and our backyard, for our pets and us to get down easy. She was hiding under the ramp platform. Our dog smelled something outside and he helped us find her. She came out and he lead her up, she walked up by herself- I was so happy and shocked to see her, and that she was able to walk. My dad wasn't home, but I called him to let him know, along with my brother who I had told about also. I gave her some food and water and she got both & nurished herself. We took her to the Vet ASAP. I had to go to gay ass class at college but my Dad called me and updated me about an hour ago- saying she's good and that the doctors say she's good, and that she was getting (cat) scans & x-rays done as we spoke then, to check out if their is any or a lot of internal bleeding but it looks like she is good and doing well :). I was surprised she was even walking and even survived the attack- and what I saw last night, WAS HORRIBLE. I'd like to thank all of you yesterday and today that replied here, helped & prayed for us. All of you are my friends & my family's prayers are thankful for such greatful people. Thank you again. I will update you if anything else goes on, and or how the xrays went. Thanks guys.

And about Blue, the cops did come but I didn't realize it or know at the time. They didn't say or do much for that matter, and the owners of the dog should pay for the cat's visits to the vet & the medical bills and all that. The dog will be taken care of as well by us. Expect that stupid ****in dog to get tortured, for what he did to us. He's a threat to the neighborhood & to the neighborhood pets.

What a sad story. I feel bad for the cat but I also feel bad for the poor dog who got beat by shovels and a bat. I totally understand why he was beaten but it just hurts me to hear of such things. Im glad that your cat is ok. That is a horrible thing to experience.

I was very saddened when I read that story, Kyle. That dog definitely needs to be put to sleep if he is that vicious towards smaller animals. Cats, whether indoor or outdoor, seem to have a natural survival instinct (their ability to land on their feet, for example) and I am glad that Shadow came back home and appears to be OK. The dog owner needs to be held responsible for what occurred.

Thanks everybody- I agree about the dog, but it seems the owner is a *******, and denies it being his dog, when the dog and him live right behind us and I see it almost every day and have seen it many times before- and prob. won't pay for the medical bills but oh well. The cops are mehh as always, not helping that much, I knew that won't break a sweat caring about this issue or go looking for the cat if she was severly hurt, wounded and still missing after today- which thank god she isn't. But I appreciate all of your kind words & sympathy for my animals, myself and family all together & it shows you really care.

An update- we took Shadow to the vet tonight ASAP...she is good...we didn't know how much the bill is, but the doctors are keeping her overnight, gave her pain medicine or antibiotics, so she can feel pain free- can be good, onward from this situatio nand can sleep well- and without pain & she's having surgery tomorrow. I believe their is NO internal bleeding- thank god...but she has a hernia....not bad considering it could be way worst...i was afraid she could of had brain damage maybe from head trauma and attacking the head, but none at all and her head was never attacked or damaged as well..but a few little lower body injuries, including the hernia- which the surgey will fix all of this, and the pain meds will help her emotionally and physically...and we should have her back in our home tomorrow night, resting cause she will be in some pain from the surgery- but I call it a good pain...she can relax and be with us once again :)

I hope nothing goes on from now until then- as far as here being scared...but I think things will turn out good...she is NOT going out at all anymore & will remain an inside cat.....that has to happen anyway, because the Glassboro rules stipulate that cats can not be otuside anyway...those are the town rules but things are great....glad how it turned out & I feel good, calm & relaxed now that this incident is over pretty much..

Ardis, I understand you and don't disagree- I love animals but hating seein them hurt as well...this is adifferent situation, the dog was rattling my cat in it's mouth and shaking it 6-7 times...and this dog is a MENACE and a f*cking beast....he made my cat, my harmless, good cat suffer greatly...i want to make that dog suffer as well...for that son of a bitch, and the piece of sh*t owner...

i'm not mad or yelling at you at all, but this was a bad situation, at least its over...but the dog needed to be hit....it's not animal cruelty if you're defending and saving a smaller animal of yours from dying or dying of severe trauma and wounds/bruises and internal bleeding etc.

people in here say the dog is a threat to this neighborhood & in general- and I most definitely agree...charles even said he would of killed the dog, and I don't disagree...Ilike dogs and cats- but I love my cats and what Shadow went through was horrible..But I appreciate you at least responding in the thread in teh first place and giving your true thoughts- thank you..

As usual, I am now just seeing this....

THANK GOD Shadow is OK, even if she has to have surgery. As for the owner of this dog, I cannot stand when people don't own up to responsibility, especially when it comes to their animals.

There are 3 cats who live at my house, 2 pretty much stay around the house, and basically stay under the cars in the driveway. The 3rd cat likes to roam around the area, he just stays within a few houses, but that's enough. I can't imagine what I would do if something like that happened to one of mine and to think of what you went through.

Like I said, I'm glad this situation turned out better than what could've happened.;)

Wow, I just read this thread for the first time. I was so sad to hear about what happened to your cat. I have three cats, and two kittens myself, so I can definitely understand how scared you must have been when she was missing. I'm so glad that you found her though, and that she seems to be okay. :) And I agree with you, the family of that dog should have to pay the vet bills. If they're going to be stupid enough to let their dog run free in the neighborhood, then they should have to pay. They shouldn't even be allowed to own a dog in the first place, but at the very least, they should have to pay for the medical costs. Anyway, I'm glad thing's turned out okay!! :)

How would you feel about bringing up a lawsuit against the owner? Even if he denies being the owner, you can still get proof. I see it all the time on those court shows, a dog owner suing another dog owner for one dog attacking another. Usually it's a bigger dog like a pit or chow attacking a terrier or chihuahua. You definitely have a case.

If you don't think you can sue, did you call animal control? I'm sure where you live there is a law that doesn't allow animals to "be at large".

You have to do something, I can see this happening again with this dog. Next time it might be a child.

We called the animal care places to report Shadow, but not the dog & I don't think we're going to sue. I know how this might turn out in court & it will be minor to the league system...especially since the rules state in my town cats can't be outside...yet she was inside when the incident occurred, and the dog dragged & pulled her outside and went from their. It's not a bad idea but we don't have that much money to back this incident up anyway, but we do have plenty of witnesses on the other hand. Thanks for helping though Phoebe. We'll figure it out, my family.

Kyle, I feel really badly that I didn't weigh in on this thread before. Don't think it was because I didn't care or was ignoring it. Frankly, I couldn't read it. Stuff like this REALLY gets to me. I can handle humans being torn limb from limb, but when it comes to animals, I just crumble.

Please know though that I have been thinking of you and your family and praying for your cat to be well. I'm so glad to hear that she's getting better!!

I know before I was born, my family had a dog that got into "Rage". He started going around the neighbourhood and attacking cats - ripping them wide open. My mother had to make the decision to have him put down. She felt badly enough about the cats, but worried that he might start on small children next. I'm sure glad this wasn't the case here.

I'm glad your cat's OK. I really do think your family should take action against the dog's owner. Next time, it could be a child that gets attacked by that nuisance.
