I'm thinking of singers or groups you like, generally accomplished and successful in more than one country YET their songs went much higher (usually their native country) in one country over another.

An example for me was The Searchers. Whose songs were far more popular/successful in Britain than in the U.S.

I know that in the the mid to late 1990's when Alternative rock was all the rage in America, there were a lot of older bands who had trouble selling albums in the US but were still popular in other countries. Bon Jovi, who were one of the biggest bands of the 1980's and are big now, were one of the groups who really suffered sales wise in America during the 1990's. Their 1995album These Days, only sold a little over a million copies in America (not good for a band as big as Bon Jovi) but the album was huge in other countries.

Bruce Springteen also suffered a drop in album sales. In the case of Bruce, I think it was in part the competition of the Alt rockers, but also that his 90's albums (Human Touch, Lucky Town, The Ghost of Tom Joad) were not up to the standards that we Bruce fans expect of him. However, in other countires he was as popular as ever.

Then there are bands that are simply popular in America but not other countries. Van Halen have never been really popular outside of the US. Infact they toured in Europre, I think, in 1995 as an opening act for Bon Jovi. No offense to Bon Jovi, who are a good band, but Van Halen are on a whole other, level in my opinion.

Chicago is another band that has never been very popular outside of America. Infact, until "If You Leave Me Now" in 1976 they never had a worldwide hit. Songs like "Saturday In The Park" and "Just You N' Me", which were million sellers in the US, were not worldwide hits.

The Searchers are awesome! Also, I think the 80s group Sheriff was more popular (or known) in Canada than in the US. Their vocalist Freddie Curci, I think is exceptional, one of the best rock singers of all time, IMO. Check out their song, 'When I'm With You'. Curci's vocal range is astonishing, especially toward the end of the song.

Queen was alot more popular in other countries than the US. It is said that the US wasn't as open-minded about Freddie's sexuality as other countries.

During the late 1960's when the a good number of fans here turned their back on them, the Beach Boys became way more popular in Europe than in their own home country. In fact when they appeared at the Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles in 1970, that was the first time in four years they played in their home state.

I know a group that was from here and popular here in the late 70s/early 80s was Triumph, but they were WAY more popular in the U.S. - especially Texas.

If so they are from Liverpool, England and were part of the British invasion in 1964.

I really like them a lot too - esp. Sweets For My Sweet. I'll look for "When I'm With You" on You Tube.

When I was in Australia, Kylie Minogue was huge in that country. I remember she had a hit with "Locomotion" back in the 80's here, but hadn't heard much about her until I went Down Under on vacation. She's like the Brittany Spears of Australia, it seemed. Or at least back in 2002. It seemed that she was in all the tabloid mags and on TV all the time. Might be different now, though.

During the 90's backlash against metal in America in the 90's, metal was, and continues to be, hugely popular in Europe.

Seattle metal band Nevermore are major stars in Greece and are treated like rock royalty over there.
