View Full Version : Less Popular Songs By a Group You Liked More Than Their Biggest Hits
OH Nuts! 05-01-2009, 07:06 AM I don't think I've seen this thread. But this is a thought that came to me as I was listening to songs on You Tube. There are some songs by a Group/Singer that I liked MUCH MORE than their signature song or biggest hit(s).
Two examples for me: Turn Down Day by the Cyrkle. I really loved this song - much more than Red Rubber Ball yet Turn Down Day only went to #16 while Red Rubber Ball reached #2.
2nd example: Sugar and Spice by The Searchers. It went to #44 while Love Potion No. 9 went to #3. Actually I like both songs almost equally just S & S a little bit more than Love Potion. Yet Love Potion No. 9 went much higher on the charts.
Your examples....
Oh and BTW my #s are the Billboard US #s quoted in the Discography section of Wikipedia.

I love "Limelight" but I have to be honest and say that "Tom Sawyer" has never been my favorite Rush song. It's a good song, but I think its the weakest song on Moving Pictures. I much perfer "The Camera Eye" and "Witch Hunt". Another great Rush example would be "New World Man" from "Signals". That was actually their biggest hit. And though I love the song, I pefer "Subdivisions" and "The Analog Kid". :)

I respect the fact that you love Limelight, and don't get me wrong, it is a good song, it's just the dreaded radio stations. Whenever they play a Rush song, with all the songs Rush has, the classic rock stations still insist on playing TS or LL(although I did hear Red Barchetta yesterday). And although I do hear Subdivisions more than alot of the other Rush songs(other than TS & LL!), I still love that song, too.
MickeyMac 05-01-2009, 04:18 PM I've always like the Beach Boys later stuff from the late 60's and early 70's. A lot of that didnt sell but I think that era is some of their best work. This is also when Brian Wilson became less involved and the other guys had to step up to the plate. This is where we saw how talented Dennis Wilson was.
browneyes106 05-01-2009, 05:34 PM There was a song on Kelly Clarkson's first album Thankful called Low. It didn't well at all on the charts but it was my favorite song from the album.
dakert 05-01-2009, 05:47 PM KISS is much more than Rock And Roll All Nite and Beth. Why "God Gave Rock And Roll To You" or a couple songs from Psycho Circus werent hits is beyond me.

I feel the same way about Queen. All the songs Queen have out and what do I hear on the radio most of the time? We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, & Killer Queen.
Well, I don't really "hear" them because I once I hear what they're playing I change the station.
Thank God for albums/CDs!!
BTW, I love "God Gave Rock & Roll to You", too!

Me, too, because the hits are all you hear on the radio! I like the none hits like I do rooting for the underdog. I just want to hear something different.

When my sister & I go to a concert, especially of an act that has a really popular song that's been played to death on the radio, we call that "our bathroom song"!;)
The thing is some acts save that song as the very last song of their set, and I like to stay until the end of the show, so there would be no point going to the bathroom!!:D
Brad Russ 05-05-2009, 12:36 PM One of the songs that sticks out most to me is The Shadow Proves The Sunshine, by Swithchfoot. They have alot of popular songs like Stars, We Are One Tonight, Dare You To Move, etc, yet The Shadow Proves The Sunshine is way better than all those songs in my view, yet it never became popular, and I never understood why it didn't. Here's the song for anyone who wants to hear it. Listen to this, and tell me this doesn't sound like a huge hit. Very underrated song, yet it's one of my all time favorites.

Our classic rock radio stations are the same way when it comes to playing Rush. Or just about any other group for that matter. When it comes to Rush they always play "2112", "The Spirit of Radio", "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight". They act like Ruch didn't record anymore albums after 1981. And even with the pre-1981 music there is a lot more they could be playing.
Nighthawk76 05-05-2009, 12:59 PM Four of my favorire songs by Chicago were not top ten hits. They are "Wishing You Were Here" (1974), "No Tell Lover" (1978), "Alive Again" (1978) and "What You're Missing" (1982). Infact, "What You're Missing" never even made the charts and never gets radio airplay, "Alive Again" doesn't get airplay either.
steevo 05-06-2009, 11:53 PM ^ Agreed. Those are all good songs by Chicago.
My favorite song from "Chicago 17" (1984) is "We Can Stop The Hurtin'" It's head and shoulders over "You're The Inspiration".

Cool song!! Chicago's my favorite group, and I've never heard that song before.
Here are a couple other songs by Chicago that I think are very underrated. Both were written in 1997, and although Here In My Heart was number one on the AC charts, I feel like it's kind of been forgotten. The Only One I don't think ever got the recognition it deserved.

Brad Russ 05-07-2009, 01:06 AM Another song that I thought was extremely underrated is Michael W. Smith's Purified. It was my favorite song on his Worship cd, and it never even hit the charts. It's one of my very favorite MWS songs, and I can't understand why it wasn't a hit.

You must have the Heart of Chicago CD, Brad. At least the first one, since that is the CD that those two songs come from. I remember that "Here In my Heart" recieved a lot of airplay back in 1997. I actually didn't like the song at first. Though I like it a lot now. At first since I didn't like "Here In My Heart", I didn't buy the CD, since I had all the other songs on it. Then is September '97 "The Only One" was put out as a single and I loved it. So, of course, I went out and bought the CD. You're right, "Here In My Heart" doesn't get a great deal of airplay anymore. Its a shame because its a really good song.
Chicago 17, the album "We Can Stop The Hurtin" is from, is the best of their post 1980 albums by far. There isn't a bad song on the entire CD. The album had four hit singles with "You're The Inspiration", "Hard Habit To Break", "Stay The Night" and "Along Comes A Woman". It also features the song "Prima Donna" from the movie Two Of A Kind. It's a great album, probably their second or third best (Chicago II from 1970 will always be my favorite), and by far the best of their post-1980 work. I highly recommend it. :)
Jude The Obscure 05-07-2009, 01:24 AM I feel that way about most of Dead or Alive's song catalog--I enjoy the lesser known stuff way more than "You Spin Me Round" or "Brand New Lover" (their two biggest US charting hits--#11 and #15 respectively)
Same for Culture Club--I can't stand "Karma Chameleon" (their only #1 and biggest charter)--I prefer all the others to it.
Nighthawk76 05-07-2009, 01:28 AM The Bee Gees had a great song in 1987 called "You Win Again" which was a huge hit in Europe, but failed in America. In 1993 they released a great song, one of my favorites, called "For Whom The Bell Tolls" which also sold poorly in the states.
Jude The Obscure 05-07-2009, 01:35 AM I remember "You Win Again", Mike! and another song called "One", I enjoyed a lot!
How about Diana Ross' "Chain Reaction"? it was released TWICE in the US as a single and failed both times to get into the top 40.
Brad Russ 05-07-2009, 02:57 AM Pretty much every song by Beth Hart is underrated. I believe the only songs of hers that hit the charts were Lifts You Up, L.A. Song, and Leave The Light On. None of the three made it very high on the charts either, which is ashame, since Beth Hart is better than 99.9% of today's mainstream singers. She's real popular in Europe, and seems to mostly tour their, but for some odd reason people just haven't caught onto her here in the U.S. I'd put her music up against any mainstream artists music, and I can almost guarantee you that most people would like her stuff more than what's popular today. She even performed on Star Search before she was famous, and won the $10,000 grand prize. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera also appeared on Star Search, but neither of them won the grand prize. Beth's just my all time favorite female singer, and is a legend in my eyes. Here are a few of her songs, so you all can judge for yourself if you'd like.
L.A. Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrZw8RToN2Y)

Yep, I have the Heart of Chicago cd. I actually had my mom drive me down to the record store, and I bought it on the day it was released. I love music, but I'm not a big cd collector, so you know I'd have to be a big Chicago fan to do that. lol!! I will check out some of their other albums you mentioned on Rhapsody, and see if I can find any hidden gems. Being that it's Chicago, I'm sure I'll find many. Thanks Mike!! :)
Btw, I was looking on amazon a little earlier, and noticed that Chicago put out a 40th anniversary album in 2007. I never knew about it, but that's one I'll definitely be getting!!
70s show watcher 05-07-2009, 05:43 AM i liked all over the world by elo i know it wasant one of there biggest hits but it is a great song .also i liked really wanna know you and blind feeling by gary wright much more than dream weaver

I bought the 40th anniversary album even though I already had every song on it on at least two other CDs. It is a good representation of their career. The only thing about it that I disliked is that some of the songs are edited. There is a complete verse taken out both "Questions 67 & 68" and "Wishing You Were Here", the guitar solo is shortened in "25 Or 6 To 4" and the insturmental section at the end of "Love Me Tomorrow" was dropped. Still, I would recommend it. :)

I really like Chicago's first LP from 1969 back when they were still Chicago Transit Authority.

I think that album remains one of their best. There is such a wide range of musical styles on it too.
steevo 05-07-2009, 11:26 PM I think that album remains one of their best. There is such a wide range of musical styles on it too.
That's the thing I think some people miss about Chicago. They are known mainly for the AC/ballad stuff from the 80's onward. While I like that material too, there is so much more to them than that. They did solid rock, jazz, and progressive stuff, and their first CD, like you said, has such a wide range of styles.
Their long-unreleased CD "Stone Of Sisyphus", which finally was released last year, is awesome and one I would recommend as well.
I don't know if this song counts because I believe it go to #1, but The Happening is my favorite Supremes song. Even though it did go to #1 it seems overshadowed by their other hits, it's rare that I hear it on the radio.
MrCleveland 05-09-2009, 01:19 PM I have a few bands that I like their other songs more than their biggest hit.
Moody Blues-Sure, I like "Nights in White Satin", but their 1969 Album On a Threshold of a Dream is actually my favorite album by The Moody Blues. The song on that album I like the most on there is "Have you Heard/The Voyage".
Procol Harum-"A Whiter Shade of Pale" may be their band's biggest hit song, but I prefer "Conquistador".
Zombies-"Time of the Season" may be their best-selling song, but I actually like the album Odyssey/Oracle a little more, even though "Time of the Season" is on there, there's a few good songs on there.
Bee Gees-The Bee Gees may have been a Disco Band, but I like their 1967 song "Turn of the Century" a little more, back before the Bee Gees were disco.
Donovan-There's many Donovan songs out there that wern't hits that I enjoy such as "Celeste" and "Epistle to Dippy".
MickeyMac 05-09-2009, 03:58 PM Zombies-"Time of the Season" may be their best-selling song, but I actually like the album Odyssey/Oracle a little more, even though "Time of the Season" is on there, there's a few good songs on there.
That is such a great album.
OH Nuts! 05-17-2009, 01:51 PM I was just back on YouTube listening to some Herman Hermit's songs - they were my 2nd most fav British gp (The Beatles being #1). HH had 2 songs I really liked that did crack the top 40 but never made the top 10 US. "No Milk Today" which charted #34 US and "I Can Take Or Leave Your Loving" which went to #22.
Interestly, the gp was never really enamored with "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter" and "Henry The VIII" - their 2 US #1's - they didn't even release Mrs. Brown in England and were shocked that it even became a hit - #1 yet. - I really liked Mrs. Brown though - but it's not my fav of the gp. And I always thought Henry the VIII was a little to goofy & gimmicky for my taste.

Two great lesser known Hermans Hermits tune you should check out both "No Milk Today" and "East West", oh and I have to add "Listen People" as well because its such a great song.
Also its nice to see someone else who appreciates Herman's Hermits.

You can never say too much nice abt HH to me, you're singing to the choir on that one. They really remind of the Beatles in a lot of ways, and if that's not a compliment, what is. I also liked HH A WAY LOT MORE than the Rolling Stones. But in fairness, its a question of style there. The RS were too wild for my tastes although there are songs of theirs I do like - but nothing like I do for HH. East West I have to listen too. Listen People is a nice sing, and I do like it, but I like No Milk Today so much more. Listen People did very well too, commercially #4 US, if I'm not mistaken.
MickeyMac 05-19-2009, 05:30 PM Frankly there is no way I could pick Herman's Hermits over the Stones. I like the Hermits, but the Stones are my boys.
To each his own :)

Believe me I totally get that & I think most would choose the Stones too. There was just something about HH that really struck a chord with me. (I always felt a little wierd that I never flipped head over heels for the Stones - I certainly DON'T dislike them & really liked Get Off Of My Cloud, Ruby Tuesday and Time Is On My Side)
And btw, I just listened to East West by HH (how'd I miss that one????) and it is very nice. Thx!
Furienna 07-01-2013, 03:34 PM Michael Jackson: "Rock with you", "The girls is mine" and "I just can't stop loving you" are three MJ songs, which became huge hits back in the day, but I don't care much for them at all. He had so many other songs, which were so much better, even if they never became hits.
Kraftwerk: It seems like "The model" will remain their biggest hit in the US, but while it's good, they've made plenty of songs, which are so much better.
Nelly Furtado: Her biggest was "I'm like a bird", but my favorite song from her is "Turn off the light".
Ohio8 07-01-2013, 08:31 PM Procol Harum: I like "A Salty Dog" and "Whiskey Train" better than other PH songs such as "Whiter Shade of Pale."
TheCars1986 07-02-2013, 03:28 PM John Mellencamp: I love "The Kind of Fella I Am" a lot more than "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." off of the "Scarecrow" album. Also "Don't Misunderstand Me" is a catchy song that I love off of his "Nothin' Matters and What if it Did" album.
The Cars: "Nightspots" and "You Can't Hold On Too Long" are far better, IMO, than "Dangerous Type" which constantly gets played on classic rock.
DJM77 07-02-2013, 05:18 PM These are the best examples that I can think of...
Marcy Playground: I can't stand "Sex and Candy" but I love "It's Saturday."
Barenaked Ladies: "One Week" would be nowhere near my top 10 list of favorite songs by them.
Beastie Boys: I'll take any song from "Paul's Boutique" over "Fight For Your Right."
Sugar Ray: I like "Rivers" better than any of their hits.
Pearl Jam: I like "All Those Yesterdays" better than any of their hits.
DC Talk: My favorite song of theirs is "Since I Met You." It wasn't a single.
ABlairican Pie 07-02-2013, 09:07 PM When it comes to my favorite artists, I like the none hits more than the hits.
i.e. Rush
I rather hear ANYTHING except Tom Sawyer or Limelight!!:p
Exactly. Everyone has been so into "Tom Sawyer" over 30 years ago, but I was into "By-Tor and the Snow Dog", "Xanadu", and "Freewill", and pretty much everything else by them!! I am a bigger fan of songs such as "Camera Eye" and "Subdivisions" than of "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight". Rush were never about "hits".
