In today's episode, "I'll Be Waving as You Drive Away," there is the scene in the house when Mary goes blind. The family is downstairs and Mary is in the loft. She screams for Pa. Watch Caroline's reaction. When Mary screams, she just looks up and then sits there while Charles races upstairs. I would think a real mother would have more of a reaction: stand up, turn her head towards the scream, something! She should have been startled. I found her lack of response to be odd.

You can see it on YouTube.

I haven't seen that episode in awhile, so I'll have to check it out on my season 4 DVD's. But I agree with you, you would think Ma would've had more of a reaction than just to sit there. If I heard my daughter scream, I would run to her in a hurry.

For the longest time, I thought what you guys thought...to a certain extent. However, I watched that part recently and, you have to look really closely...but Caroline does react. First her right arm moves, as if she had just had the beejeezus scared out of her. At the same time, her mouth moves, in sort of an "Oh my God" way.

Additionally, she was holding baby Grace at the time, which may have limited her reactions.

Good point. I'll have to watch that episode again - haven't seen it in ages.

What you also have to remember is that they knew that Mary was going to go blind, so it wasn't something that was a surprise. Of course, to Mary, it was a bit more of a shock when it happened, because it was happening to her. Caroline seems resigned to it, as she knew it was coming.
