View Full Version : "Rhoda" Pilot Edited
scotsguy 04-28-2009, 09:33 AM I got my DVD set of "Rhoda" yesterday, delighted its finally out on DVD.
From reading the season one reviews on here,I was prepared for some episodes to be edited.
Right away the pilot, has the hilarious opening scene of Mary saying goobye to Rhoda at the airport removed,I taped this from "The Family Channel"(UK) in the mid 90s,so thankfully, have the complete pilot on vhs.
Also "The Shower" has dialogue removed, when Joe says he has to get out as women at these things tend to smile and nod at him, again, lucky enough to have this episode unedited.
"9E Is Available" has dialogue cut, when Jill says Rhoda, seems a capable, down to earth person and Rhoda says "Gee,thanks!"
I understand they say at the start of the DVD they say "they're using the best masters" even if they had added the missing scenes as special features would have been a good idea.
Don't get me wrong delighted with this DVD set but the big chunk missing from the pilot, got things off to a rocky start!

Everyone already knew the pilot was edited because it was discussed in the SitcomsOnline Review back in March. So this is not new news
scotsguy 04-28-2009, 06:48 PM I didn't say it was, just giving the forum my view.
McGillicuddy 05-02-2009, 11:04 PM Well, I'm disappointed about the pilot being edited. I was looking forward to seeing Mary race to see Rhoda off. How's the wedding episode. Is it the complete hour as originally televised? I remember more footage of Rhoda running through New York in her wedding dress.
scotsguy 05-03-2009, 12:57 PM Hi,
Yes thankfully "The Wedding" is unedited ,"The Shower" episode has quite a few cuts as does "9E Is Avaialble".
I've kept videos I taped from cable of many of the first season episodes. of "Rhoda",glad I kept them now,you can see how some episodes have been cut when I compare them to my videos.

Unless you plan on providing a copy of your UNEDITED eps that you so glad you kept, nobody needs to know about your unedited eps. That's something you can keep to yourself. It almost sounds as if you are gloating that you have that so many Rhoda Fans don't
scotsguy 05-03-2009, 02:57 PM I am actually providing them to people I'm not gloating, you seem to have a negative opinion everytime I post on here.
McGillicuddy 05-03-2009, 09:02 PM Scots- I just bought the dvd set today. Thanks for the info on the edited/unedited episodes. I'm not sure why the last poster attacked you like that. I appriciate what you know. Could I contact you a copy of the episode of the pilot? Thanks.
OOliver 05-07-2009, 06:37 PM Scotsguy - thanks for your opinion on the DVD. Even though it was reviewed when it first came out, I appreciate other fans taking the time to share their opinions as well. The more I read these personal reviews, though, the less I'm tempted to buy the DVD.
You're very lucky to have the unedited eps on tape. That's proven a valuable resource to compare what the DVD has (unfortunately) deleted and to share with the other fans.
Thank you again for your contribution! :)
likewow 05-13-2009, 04:13 PM Yes, I also appreciate reading your reaction to the DVD set. :) I came here today hoping for some more opinions but there haven't been many since the set was released. Thanks!

That's because not many people bought the DVD after reading the review. I was one of them
McGillicuddy 05-13-2009, 08:36 PM I went ahead and purchased Rhoda, because its part of MTM, one of my favorite shows. Though I am quite disappointed by the edits, I'm still enjoying it, haven't seen the show in years. If Rhoda's Wedding was cut, I probably would have passed. I do wish Shout! would have taken more time with this release instead of rushing to get it out for the 35th anniversary. I did like the retrospective with Jim Brooks and Allen Burns, but too short, and where's Valerie? I can understand why people passed on this after the review, so basically it depends on how much of a MTM/Rhoda fan you are in regards to getting this.
I've been reading the pros & cons from you guys as well as the review and still can't decide if I want to buy it or not. Since it's been so long since I've seen the show, I probably won't remember half of what's been edited. But I am wondering about the picture & sound quality? Would you say overall that it's pretty decent or is it poor?
Dr. Thong 05-14-2009, 05:48 PM I was never someone who watched Rhoda all the time, though I did see some episodes in prime time here and there. I do remember seeing the first episode with Mary Tyler Moore, though.
To me, why bother releasing something like this unless they're going to have the original, unedited full episodes? If I see a M*A*S*H rerun on Ion or Nick at Nite, I find myself scoffing because they edited a scene or a line out of the episode.
scotsguy 05-15-2009, 05:25 AM Yes I think its such a shame so many episodes are edited,I'd understand if the complete episodes didn't exist but as they do,seems strange.
I'd never say to anyone not to buy the DVD set as if season one doesn't sell well,it will harm the releases of future seasons.
The picture quality and sound is variable they do warn you about that at the start,"The Wedding" "Chest Pains" "Ida The Elf" "The Honeymoon" and "Along Comes Mary" are unedited.
Schmoopie 05-15-2009, 05:56 AM That's crappy that they edit stuff out! I think if you are going to shell out the money to buy the complete series, it should be just that. Complete! I'd be mad, too! What's the point in them doing that? I can understand editing on TV (sort of... after all it's a TV series), but DVD's should be complete.

But I don't think fans would be interested in anymore releases since the first release was so horrbly presented. Why would season 2 be any different than season 1?

Taking your money to buy a Edited DVD is like paying to go to a Amusement Park when you already know on that day the weather forecast is POURING DOWN RAIN and THUNDERSTORMS
LOL

Well, I guess it depends on if the company pays any attention to the criticism from this forum. I think Shout! Factory is more likely to consider was consumers are have to say, more so than say Sony or Fox!

I don't know, the first release SETS THE TONE for wht to expect after the first release and this first releases is very unattractive.
Kind of like arguing with a girl on the first date-lol
likewow 05-18-2009, 04:26 PM Since one of the members of this board has said he has seen the unedited pilot, it doesn't make much sense that Shout! couldn't find it.
Personally, I don't think Rhoda was that good after the wedding, but I still wouldn't want the season one sales to hurt prospects for other seasons on DVD.
But, as with Mama's Family on DVD, one bad release can kill the momentum.

The first release of Rhoda on DVD was like a Horse charging out of the gate and then falling and breaking his leg-lol Momentum is GONE

Now Mama's Family I passed on buying when it first came out, cause I thought what's the point, I can see the edited episodes any time. But eventually I picked it up used really cheap. I hope it can be rereleased by whoever owns the unedited prints at some point.
