View Full Version : SCTV is on the air!
Freakzilla 02-01-2001, 05:36 PM Until the end of March, NBC is showing the classic comedy series SCTV after Conan O'Brien at 1:35 a.m, Monday-Thursday. If you haven't seen this show, you need to put a tape in the VCR tonight. Put a tape in the VCR and watch it tommorrow. You won't regret it, "I must say", to quote the great Martin Short.
Freakzilla 02-02-2001, 05:58 PM One of the great things about SCTV is how even though many of it's celebrity references are dated now, they're still funny. It's still funny to see the late John Candy as Merlin Olson punch out an ultra-annoying Jamie Farr, played by Martin Short.
That's another thing about SCTV. The show had one of the most talented casts ever on TV. You had Candy, Short, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Catherine O'Hara, Rick Moranis, and Dave Thomas all on one show. They were also the show's main writers.
Freakzilla 02-06-2001, 05:05 PM I can't believe there aren't any other SCTV fans here.
silentbri 02-06-2001, 08:17 PM OH MY GAWD!!! Are you sure this an action by NBC, and not just your local NBC Affiliate? I'm gonna stay up late tonight just to see, even though I haven't watched Connan since Andy Richter left... it just seems like an empty show, ya know?
Lance Link 02-07-2001, 10:08 AM Wasn't SCTV an hour program and NBC cut it down to a half hour ?
factsoflife 03-04-2001, 06:21 PM could someone tell me wasStacey Dash in SCTV? and also wasn't it a canadian show or something?
treky 01-04-2015, 04:17 AM what're you talking about? NBC isn't doing this, and Conan's not on the network!!!

treky 04-06-2016, 01:29 AM I wish ME TV would show it.
I fell in love with Catherine O'Hara watching the 1970s episodes.

It's basically sketch comedy, mostly about TV. You can find it all over YouTube.

Being a Svengoolie fan you might appreciate the recurring sketch where Joe Flaherty plays a horror movie TV host:

treky 04-07-2016, 12:45 AM it was originally a half-hour and ran in first-run syndication then NBC picked it up and they expanded it to 90 minutes then it went to Prism which was a cable network at the time (the 80s) and became an hour.

It went to Cinemax and they did 45 minute shows after NBC canceled it, not hour long shows on Prism.
MrCleveland 04-07-2016, 12:44 PM me too
I'm a big fan of John Candy...I even made a six-degrees of seperation with John Candy because of it.
Example...
Ray Liotta
Ray Liotta's big movie was GoodFellas which also co-starred Joe Pesci. Joe Pesci was in JFK which also starred...John Candy!
mets82 04-07-2016, 02:32 PM So was SCTV like Saturday Night Live? Let me ask this, which show was better? Also, when they were both on at the sametime, which was better?

I'd say it was equal to the SNL of the 70's, I prefer SCTV to SNL over the rest of SNL's run. As a whole I prefer the cast of SCTV with the likes of Martin Short, John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Joe Flaherty, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Andrea Martin.
Bit 'o trivia: Martin Short did his Ed Grimley character on both SCTV and SNL.
treky 04-08-2016, 02:28 AM yea, but SCTV didn't have very many musical numbers (every once in a while they did but it would always be a part of the sketch-for instance if a sketch was set in a nightclub they have a singer who was a guest on the show performing) and the episodes didn't have a host.
I read somewhere that when it was a half-hour a lot of stations would show it right before or right after SNL-I remember the NBC affiliate in my city used to show it right after.
