Acclaimed director WOODY ALLEN has stated that he cannot usually afford to make films in his beloved New York, which was the location for some of his most famous releases.
His comments came as he premiered his latest flick WHATEVER WORKS, which was shot in the Big Apple, at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The MANHATTAN and ANNIE HALL director told Reuters that he has had to head to European destinations, such as London and Barcelona, for his latest four offerings, which include VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA and MATCH POINT.
"I do them abroad because I can't really afford to shoot in New York because it's too expensive for me," he said. "I can make the money stretch further if I'm shooting in London or shooting in Barcelona. Here it's more expensive, although I had enough money to make this particular film."
WHATEVER WORKS stars EVAN RACHEL WOOD, who rose to fame in THIRTEEN, and LARRY DAVID.
David, who co-created hit sitcom SEINFELD, plays an eccentric man who gets tangled up with a young girl from the south (Wood) and her parents.
The screening, which marked the opening of the film festival, was attended by a host of famous faces, including UMA THURMAN, DEBRA MESSING, MARY KATE OLSEN and festival co-founder ROBERT DE NIRO.
Tribeca Film Festival will run until May 3rd and some 85 features and 46 short films will be shown during this period, including 45 world premieres, five international premieres, three US premieres and 12 New York premieres.
Among the titles being shown are DONALD PETRIE'S MY LIFE IN RUINS, which stars RICHARD DREYFUSS and NIA VARDALOS, THE GOOD GUY starring ALEXIS BLEDEL and ANNA CHLUMSKY and Australian actor ERIC BANA's directorial debut, a documentary called LOVE THE BEAST.
The festival was established in 2002 to help boost filmmaking in New York following September 11th.
