Robert Rodriguez is Re-booting PREDATOR!

Director Robert Rodriguez has taken on the 20th Century Fox PREDATOR franchise and creating a newly rebooted "PREDATORS."


We've heard the rumblings that this was coming via B-D, but now it's been confirmed. IESB has also confirmed it will be Rodriguez' own take on the original concept and he is in fact not only producing the reboot, he's also directing it.

In a news conference today at Troublemaker Studios, several Texas state politicians were in attendance to sign HB 873, the long-awaited reform of the Texas film incentive program.

Rodriguez talked to the audience of press members and revealed his upcoming film slate.

"I'm going to be able to shoot my upcoming Machete here, a sci-fi action film called Nervewrackers, a re-boot of the Predator series called Predators, and a couple of smaller movies called Sin City 2 and The Jetsons."

Writer Tapped For Predator Reboot

Bloody-Disgusting got the scoop that Alex Litvak is currently penning the new draft of Predators that's to be produced by Robert Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios for 20th Century Fox.

Litvak recently wrote Medieval for New Regency. The reboot to the classic 80's action/horror flick Predator is being penned as a "sequel" and will follow a team of commandoes who face down a mysterious race of vicious monsters.

The project is on fast-track for a July 9, 2010 release. No word yet on who will be directing as Rodriguez is now said to not be getting behind the camera.

Derek Mears Rumored For Predators Reboot

A very interesting rumor has hit the web via AITH this evening as they report that Derek Mears - who you might know as the new Jason Voorhees - is a potential candidate to take on a role in 20th Century Fox's Predators, their reboot of the Predator franchise being produced by Robert Rodriguez and his Troublemaker Studios.

While on the red carpet of Drag Me to Hell he was baited into spilling the bean, he simply replied, "Yeah, it would be awesome." Watch this spot for any confirmation as it comes in. The question remains, would he be a predator or one of the kickass big men with even bigger guns? What do you think?

Predators a Straight-Up Sequel?

What direction is Predators, 20th Century Fox's latest entry in the Predator franchise, going in? Remake? Sequel? It appears it may be the latter.

Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror), according to a Moviehole tipster is "considering this an official sequel to John McTiernan's film." And because of this, Rodriguez people have reached out to Arnold Schwarzenegger to participate in the film in some capacity.

"Like Terminator, they know Schwarzenegger's a vital ingredient of the franchise. Ideally, Arnold will see it that way too. Ball is in his court now," says the site.

Reportedly Schwarzenegger's "Dutch" has been written into the script. The size of his part is unknown.

Rodriguez Speaks On Predators

Really, they could pretty much hire any director to helm Predators and it would be a step up from the "Brothers Strause" who directed AVP: Requiem (if you can call that nonsense directing). But as one of the few who enjoyed Vacancy (until that copout ending) and also his older, non-horror film Kontroll, I am pretty happy with the confirmation of Nimrod Antal as the man to take charge of this re-whatever. Of course, I was just as happy with Neil Marshall, and also some of the other names I heard, but at least they are solid directors, not VFX guys who learned how to yell "action" and "cut" and nothing else. Rodriguez, on Antal:

First of all, on a personal level I found him to be an outstanding presence, a great communicator full of ideas, and upon meeting him you can immediately understand how he is able to wrangle cast and crew and get the best out of everyone. I always loved Kontroll, where he proved himself to be a very resourceful and original filmmaker. When I saw Armored, I could tell he's also great with action and has a keen eye for casting. He reminded me of Quentin with how he was able to work with a group of very strong, singular actor talents and make it look effortless.

I know he'll be able to get the most out of what we want to be an outstanding cast. We really want to go with a character driven action movie, because that's what we all remember about the original Predator, and we want to take it even further with this.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed both Latino Review and AICN's reports that Nimrod Antal, the director of the horror film Vacancy, has been hired to direct Predators for Fox and producer Robert Rodriguez.

They add that in this version, a group of humans will find themselves stranded on a planet home to Predators and must survive the horrors they encounter.

James Cameron pulled a similar move with his advancement of the Alien franchise in his Aliens. I guess they mean it's similar because they take on more Predators?

Alex Litvak & Michael Finch (Medieval) have written the script. The new iteration, which Rodriguez has been hoping to make since 1994, when he was hired to write a screenplay for a second sequel, is scheduled for a July 7, 2010 release.

Robert Rodriguez Takes Predators to Texas

One of the biggest horror project currently in development is Predators, the Robert Rodriguez produced reboot/prequel of Predator being directed by Nimrod Antal (Vacancy). Since the film's official announcement, Rodriguez has yet to officially comment on the project, until today. Below you'll find out his plans for the film that will be filming in Texas.

"It's the story from that script I had written way back then," Rodriguez told the LA Times. "They had hired me to write a Predator story while I was waiting to do Desperado back in 1994. It was crazy, this thing I came up with. So then fast-forward to now and, like, six months ago, they found the script and called me up. ‘Hey, we want to redo this franchise and we found your old script. This is where we should have gone with the series! We want to move forward.' And that's what we're doing.” Also stating, "It was this crazy, intense off-world story and there was just no way it could be made. The technology wasn't there yet."


The good news is 20th Century Fox, who is known for ruining films by getting over-involved, will be keeping out of this reboot.

Predators will be shot in his home state of Texas on a lean budget and so far removed from Hollywood that it is doesn't get run through the often bruising machinery of the studio. Predators is for 20th Century Fox and Shorts is being distributed by Warner Bros., but Predators will be clearly defined by Rodriguez and his personal style.

"It’ll be a mix. A lot of location sets and some green scene. There’s a lot of different places in Texas I have in mind, and we have a great rebate thing there now, only 60% has to be shot in Texas. We’re scouting for locations now. You can find some alien landscapes in Texas for sure. And with the right augmentation, you can make anywhere look like anywhere now."

Shooting is just around the corner for Predators, the latest entry in 20th Century Fox's creature saga.

Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) is behind the camera this time, working from a script by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch. But when production begins late next month down at Robert Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas - who will be realizing the Predators this time around? Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger's KNB FX. This is the first time the shop has tackled the otherworldly hunters, however, individually, Nicotero worked on the '87 film, as did Berger and KNB's Shannon Shea.

"It is going to be KILLER," Nicotero told me earlier this afternoon when I inquired about Predators. Of course, KNB and Robert Rodriguez - who is producing the latest film - have had a long history together collaborating on From Dusk Till Dawn and Sin City, to name two titles.

KNB is currently at work on Priest for Screen Gems as well.

Predators Scouting in Hawaii

Last week, the production team behind 20th Century Fox's Predators has spent some time down in Hawaii scouting its jungles.

Tim Ryan's Reel Hawaii reports that if the next sequel in the franchise does ultimately lens on one of the island it will be for 18 days sometime in October. Principal photography begins on on September 28 at producer Robert Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.


Directed by Nimrod Antal, and written by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch, Predators finds a group of people on the Predator home planet which was witnessed for the first time in Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem and appeared to be a rocky terrain.

I guess the cat is out of the bag as Danny Trejo has been telling attendees of the HorrorFind Weekend that he's set to star in Nimrod Antal's Predator remake, Predators, which is being produced by Robert Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios for 20th Century Fox.

No word on what his role will be just yet.

Predators Plot Details Revealed

"Cuchillo." That's the name of Danny Trejo's character in Predators, the sequel Robert Rodriguez is producing with Nimrod Antal in the director's chair. This lil' nugget of info and more can be gleaned from Latino Review's video script review they posted today.

They've got the drop on all sorts of plot details which include the names of all of the bad-asses who are transported to the Predator home planet and thrust into its jungles.

It appears the eight people who comprise this varied troupe was kidnapped by the alien hunters. Armed to the teeth, they're forced to defend themselves from predator dogs, predator falcons, a "super" Predator (known as "Black Super Predator") and his buddies.

The review also says, if all goes well, there is still room for a cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The film is being produced at Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios and will hit theaters next summer.

Major Predators Casting Announcement Made!

Update: Two more names revealed inside. Are you ready for a whopper, the controversy of the week?

In a surprise development, Oscar winner Adrien Brody (King Kong, The Pianist, The Village, Splice) has been cast by 20th Century Fox to play the heroic mercenary who battles alien hunters in Predators, their reboot/sequel of the Predator franchise that is being creatively spearheaded by Robert Rodriguez and his Troublemaker Studios. He is signed on for multiple films.

Grace would play an accountant-type whose unassuming facade masks a dangerous serial killer.

Braga is the tough female killer.

Ali is a man not afraid to die.

Goggins is the loose canon of the group.

Taktarov is a former Russian special ops agent.

Trejo, already cast, is Cuchillo, a hardened warrior with twin uzis strapped to his back.



Shooting begins next month in Hawaii then moves to moves to Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin.

Exclusive: Nimród Antal Talks About Predators

Long-time readers might remember that ComingSoon.net spoke to director Nimród Antal way back in 2005 when he was in New York with his feature film debut Kontroll. Back then, we claimed you'd be "seeing more of this talented young director in the future."

Next Friday, Antal's third movie, the crime-thriller Armored starring Laurence Fishburne, Matt Dillon, Jean Reno and Columbus Short will open nationwide and he's already hard at work directing Robert Rodriguez's Predators, which will relaunch the franchise next summer.

Earlier today, ComingSoon.net got on the phone to talk to the director further about his transition to Hollywood filmmaker, a conversation that also included a few tidbits about Predators, for which he has roughly a month left of filming.




"So far, it's been great, and I think that the fans who may have been underwhelmed by the last two "AVP" films, I think they're in for a very pleasant surprise," he told us tentatively when asked how it was going.

Since the movie's title seemingly will include Robert Rodriguez's name even though the Austin-based filmmaker isn't directing, we were curious how involved Rodriguez was in the actual making of the movie.

"Robert hired me, so obviously I'm very grateful for him giving me a shot. He is involved in the screenplay and we've had a lot of conversations, and any big decisions I want to make, I always speak to him about, but he's been very gracious and he's been letting me do my thing. He's really let me perform and he's let me dance, so again, I'm grateful to him for that."


"I think 'Kontrol' was the reason that Robert gave me a shot," Antal answered when asked how he and Rodriguez first hooked up.

"I think when the question came up regarding 'Predators,' I made it clear that I was excited about that and I could do something like that and I had met with Robert a few times. He had seen 'Kontroll' and he had watched 'Armored' and I think based on those two films, he gave me a chance."




While Rodriguez has embraced doing things using CG animation, Antal has preferred the aesthetics of doing things practical and in-camera over the years, so we wondered whether they were able to find a happy balance there.

"I think we both recognize that the original film was as good as it was because of the practical, because it was a guy in a suit, because it was the jungle, so we stay true to that. We were in Hawaii for a month in the jungle, so there's going to be some pretty impressive locations."




While Antal has also been working with a lot of Rodriguez's crew, he was able to return to his Hungarian roots by having his Kontroll Director of Photography Gyula Pados shoot the film.

"He was someone who I really wanted and he's someone whose talent is enormous, so I was lucky to have Gyula come back on this one."




From talking with the director over the years, we know he's a fan of all movies but especially those of the '80s and Predator was no exception:

"Let me tell you, I was so much of a fan that I stood in line when I was 14 and I had the poster on my wall. I was a huge fan," he responded enthusiastically, so we wondered how hard it was going to be not to be so faithful to the original that he's not able to bring any of his own vision to it.

"Again, it was a challenge in finding a balance. I think when we cast Adrian, there were a lot of people going, 'What?' but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that.

So we decided early on to go in a very different direction as far as the casting process, but it turned out fantastic. He plays a mercenary in the film and if you look at the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan today, they're not 'yolked-out' Schwarzenegger-looking guys. They're all very wiry and thin guys, and I think it's going to play well."




He did get a laugh when we asked him directly whether Arnold himself might make an appearance, maybe because we prefaced it by mentioning McG's own dilemma with how to answer that incessant question while promoting Terminator Salvation.

Wisely, Antal remained coy, only saying, "Time will tell. We'll see, but we are trying to stay with the original as far as the monster and the atmosphere and the tone of the film, but we are trying to do something new and contemporary and feels fresh."


Before we wrapped things up, he did confirm that Predators was being shot to be an R-rated film, so if nothing else, that should make a lot of fans happy in the long run.

A Look at the Predators Home Planet

KNGB News is reporting that Troublemaker Studios recently used Canyon Lake Gorge in Texas as a backdrop for Predators, adding that the location will be used as a portion of the Predator's home planet in 20th Century Fox's remake arriving in theaters July 9, 2010.

"Specifically, they went to a spot that 10 years ago didn’t exist, but after flood of 2001, when water went over the spillway at Canyon Lake, a huge gorge was cut out of the landscape, and apparently the filmmakers thought the gorge was the perfect look to create an alien landscape," writes KNGB.

This morning, the web got hit with what's being called a "teaser poster" for Nimrod Antal's Predators. Sources told us immediately it wasn't legit, so we ignored it.


However, thanks to Robert at Aullidos (who broke the story), we've got a bit of clarification.

It appears the international branch at 20th Century Fox set up a virtual Christmas page that previews what's to come in 2010. There you'll find graphics for Wall Street 2 as well as Predators.


The image, we suspect, is merely a placeholder. It's clear it's two previously-used images from the AvP films mashed together with some Photoshop trickery.

Our Fox reps here in the States say it shouldn't be accepted as "the official teaser poster"...

Interview of Actor Louis Ozawa Changchien on Upcoming Film Predators

Robert Rodriguez's Predators (directed by Nimrod Antal), sequel to the horror flick classic Predator (1987), is to come out in Summer 2010.

Louis Ozawa Changchien is a Japanese American actor who is casted as Hanzo, one of the people abducted by Predators who must fight for his life in the alien's hunting field on an alien planet.

We got a chance to interview him during his visit to Japan this holidays, and he revealed us bunch of interesting details on the upcoming film.




♦ About the Filming



Gigazine (G): We hear Predators is to hit the theatres in the U.S. this July. How's the filming going?

Louis Ozawa Changchien (L): We're really making progress. There's only one week left of shooting.


G: How long was the whole shooting?

L: Three months in all. Three weeks in Hawaii, two and a half month in Texas. So the major part was done in Texas.


G: Why Hawaii and Texas?

L: Many films are shot in Hawaii since it's a safe place. The insects there can be annoying but there's no malaria, and there's no snakes.


G: There are no snakes in Hawaii?

L: None at all. You didn't know it? It's true. Hawaii has no snakes, though they do get tsunamis.


G: How about Texas? Aren't there many snakes in Texas?

L: But we didn't see any since we shot during the winter. The location at Texas was made to look exactly like an alien planet.

We shot on a land washed by flood, a sandy place, and it looked just like you're walking on the moon.


G: Flood in Texas?

L: Actually, Texas is the most flood-prone state in the U.S. You'd think of Minnesota as the lake state but Texas' got even more lakes than Minnesota.

Anyway, the shooting is going smoothly, we'll finish filming in a week and then go in to postproduction.


G: What other places did you shoot, aside from the studio in Austin?

L: There's a swimming hole called Hamilton Pool in Texas, with beautiful blue water, waterfalls, caves, which was one of our location. We also shot at Valley of the Kings (Iao Valley) in West Maui.


G: How did the shooting in the main studio (Troublemaker Studios of Robert Rodriguez uses the Austin Studios facilities) went?

L: The studio's located at the former site of an airport, and it is also where Sin City was shot. They propped up 40 or so stowages and filled the place with real rocks and stones and trees to build a jungle set full of real plants, the most elaborate set I've seen in my career.

Of course it must be expensive, but it really did look like a Hawaiian jungle. That was the "Hunting Camp" where most of the story takes place.







♦ The Cast of Predators



G: It was reported on December 18 that Laurence Fishburne, known for his role Morpheus in The Matrix, is also casted. Is it true?

L: Yes, it is. We were nagging them everyday like "Is Fishburne really coming?" but all of us were excited to find out indeed he is.

There were many rumours at first, like it will be Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, or even Arnold Schwarzenegger, but I'm glad Laurence was casted in the end.

It's a really interesting role, quite different from Morpheus. A bit shady, crazy, surviving on his own, kind of a ratty character. I didn't know anything about his role, and we all went to see the rehearsal. It was quite a surprise.




G: How was he received by the other cast?

L: Of course he's very admired and we all look up to him. He's done many outstanding acting in his career.

Since The Matrix became so popular many people think of him as Morpheus, but personally I liked him since his earlier films. He's also a great Broadway actor.




G: It was reported that he visited the set on December 14 and very much admired it. What do you think he saw there?

L: He must have seen the aforementioned jungle set, and there are also indoor set of the residence of Fishburne's character, so I guess he's seen it too. His character managed to survive 10 years on the alien's planet living in a cave.



G: So he is a king of survival?

L: You can say that. He's definitely a good fighter but also good at escaping.




G: Did you see the much praised "miniature set"?

L: The miniature is a model for the actual set, so we don't shoot the miniature. Life-sized set are built based on the miniature, and that is the "Hunting Camp", the large jungle set.



G: What actually does the Hunting Camp look like?

L: It's hard to explain. Not anything you'll ordinarily see, there are meat hanging, and....


G: So it's like a butcher shop rather than a forest?

L: Right. Kind of like a barbecue pit, always reeking smoke...


G: Smoky, as in that scene from Black Rain?

L: Sort of. And that reminds me that my Kendo teacher appears in Black Rain, by the way, casted as Ken Takakura's son though he's actually only ten years younger than Takakura.







♦ The Story of Predators



G: The synopsis on IMDb says "A group of elite warriors are hunted by members of a merciless alien race known as Predators." , and you are casted as "Hanzo". What is he like?

L: He's basically a mean yakuza. A yakuza abducted by the Predators.


G: Why was he abducted?

L: He's not the boss in the yakuza family but obviously not a no-one. He's probably a right-hand man sort of guy, very much feared and very skilled.

Excellent gun man and also competent with a sword.


G: So his fighting skill attracted the attention of Predators?

L: I guess so. That part is not explained in the movie, everyone is suddenly abducted and dropped on the Hunting Camp, so they're not aware of where they are or why they were dropped there.

They all gradually become aware of the situation and surroundings.




G: Was it easy to get into your role?

L: In fact, it was a bit challenging. He's the silent type, man of very few words, whereas I'm very talkative and love joking around. As Hanzo, I have to be cool and collected for a change.



G: Is Hanzo a cold-blooded killer?

L: I guess he used to be, a guy who can murder someone without a qualm, but by the time he arrives to the Hunting Camp, he'll no longer be that kind of person.

Those things aren't explained in the script, but you'll get it when you see the movie.



G: Can you tell us what he looks like?

L: His outfit is a grey three-piece suit, slinging a Beretta on his shoulder. His other weapon is a Japanese sword he finds in the Hunting Camp.

It was left there by a 15th century samurai, who was probably killed there.




G: How long has Fishburne's character been living in the Hunting Camp?

L: Around ten years, I guess. Ten years, all on his own!

You'd wonder what he'd been eating. Must have been living on quite exotic diet.



G: Guess you can't tell us the storyline, but which title in the past Predator franchise do you feel is the closest to the new film?

L: The first film. There's a lot of homage to the '87 Predator, and fans must be able to recognise some characters as reincarnation from the original film.

Some people see Arnold in my character, Hanzo.



G: So we'd better watch Predator again before the new film?

L: That'll be recommended. I always liked the film but seeing it again, you'll be reminded how rightfully it's considered a classic. You can clearly see how original it was.



G: They were also quite groundbreaking, look-wise. Predators have a kind of samurai-ish aspect, and they were the first alien creatures of the kind.

L: Certainly. A samurai with dreadlocks. They wear Japanese armours with Jamaican hairdo, with kinky fishnet stockings to boot!




G: So, how did you came to be casted in Predators?

L: I'm kind of in the dark there. Well, of course I auditioned, but I don't know why I was chosen. I kind of have this "silent strength" thing, since I've been practicing Kendo for long, or maybe it was the chemistry thing with other actors.

I haven't talked about those stuff with the director yet, so maybe I should ask about it the next time I see him. I did hear there were other Japanese candidates.

FOX kept asking me whether I'm really Japanese or not, until the end, so I had to explain that although my father is Taiwanese, my mother is Japanese and they met in Japan, married in Japan...the whole story.

So, as a Japanese I had a lot to say on Hanzo's action stunts, since the stunt men were all excellent but they all moved like kung-fu.

When you think about it, the fight scene in Kill Bill took place in Japan and those people were supposed to be Japanese, but their moves were all kung-fu. So I begged them to please let me do all my own stunts, and to let my Kendo teacher in.

As it turns out, director Nimrod Antal is also quite fond of Kendo so he agreed.

Unfortunately, filming of the swordfight coincided with my teacher's important Eighth-dan examination, plus the filming was delayed time and again due to bad weather, but he put the filming in Texas before his examination.

I've been learning from him since I was five, so he's like a second father to me by now.




G: In closing, can you give our readers a message?

L: Please watch it! I guess it'll come out in Japan this summer? Do see it on the big screen! And please get the DVD, too!

Who's Scoring The Upcoming Predators?

Film Music Reporter says that composer John Debney will be providing the original score for Nimrod Antal's eagerly anticipated sequel Predators.


The choice is not surprising considering Debney worked previously with writer/producer Robert Rodriguez on Sin City, the first two Spy Kids movies and The Adventures of Shark-Boy and Lava-Girl.

He's also providing the score for another big summer release, Iron Man 2.

Latest Predators Chatter: Hulking Out and Varied Creatures

With just days until 20th Century Fox premieres the first ever footage from Nimrod Antel's Predators - the Robert Rodriguez Troublemaker Studios prequel to the incredible 80's action-horror pic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger - a pair of interviews popped up online that talk about the Predators, along with how the entire cast needed to bulk up for their tough battle on the alien home planet. Predators arrives in theaters July 9.




The first news bite comes from an interview with co-star Alice Braga via MTV where she tells us that she thinks the Predators are "cool".

"The predators, fans, they look really cool! I was really scared. The guys that play them, they're really tall," she explained adding a bit about her character.

"She's a girl from special forces. She's a tough cookie. She's a sniper. She jumps into the story and is trying to run for her life, which is classic "Predator" films."




She also talked a but about star Adrien Brody hulking out for is role (as you know, the first film feature a pack of muscle-clad men).

"He was amazing. When we arrived in Hawaii where we first started shooting the film, it was really interesting that he was willing to really get stronger because his body is naturally thin.

All of us, we bonded together as a team. We were working out together. He really changed his body, which is great because he challenged himself to do something he hasn't been doing.

I think he's done it for some films, but never as an action hero. I think he did a great job. I think people are going to be really impressed with his work."






Speaking of packing on pounds, Walton Goggins chatted with Movieweb about how he's excited that this film doesn't feature weight lifting powerhouses.

"I think the thing that I'm most excited about is our lack of someone that is really big," explained Goggins. "We're all regular guys. Except ... we do have Oleg Taktarov (Righteous Kill) and he will tell you how big he is, multiple times," joked the actor.

"But for the most part we are all average builds and I think that gives people an opportunity to see themselves in this movie. At the end of the day I think the thing that I'm most excited about is it's not just an action movie but it's a movie about these characters that hopefully you will grow to love over the course of the story."




As for the look of the actual Predators, Goggins explains that we'll see a mix of different looks.

"I think that you're going to get to see a combination of classic Predators with a modern twist told by very, very competent filmmakers," the actor stated.

"I think that the images in this movie are going to rival any other movie in its genre for quite some time," he proclaimed.

Alice Braga Thinks Predators Will Be PG-13 -- But She Doesn't Know HOW!

To go along with yesterday's report, yet another Predators star spoke out about the prequel arriving in theaters July 9.

In short, Repo Men star Alice Braga thinks that the Nimrod Antel directed film will be PG-13, although she doesn't know how.



"I don't know that, I think they might try to do PG-13, but I'm not sure," Braga tells participants in this past weekend's press conference.

"I'm not sure, I hope not actually. You know what, I think they might not be able to do it PG-13 because there are some dark scenes in it, like the other films. So I think it's going to be R.

But going back to a previous question about editing, we never know what's going to happen. But it looks really dark and really nice. I think, I had fun."

Adrien Brody on His Predator-Filled Future

While promoting his new film Splice this weekend in LA, Adrien Brody chatted with us about his role in another summertime sci-fi thriller, Robert Rodriguez's long-awaited Predators.




"I love trying to find things that are unusual," said Brody of the challenge of his Predators role.

"I don't want to make safe bets. I want to find characters that speak to me and explore different genres. 'Predators' is a no-brainer for me. Anyone who would question why I would make 'Predators' I don't think really understands the journey of an actor.

I grew up in Queens and I saw 'Predator' in theaters and I was blown away by that movie."





"Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I'd have the gauntlet passed to me -- from Schwarzenegger to little Adrian Brody." he laughed.


"And it shouldn't be thought of as anything other than a tremendous accomplishment and a tremendous amount of work on my part and the people who work for me's part, to convince the studio of the strength I can bring, which I think is something that isn't often depicted in Hollywood movies.

They go with a more superficial thing and more superficial elements, and I feel that it's much more complex than that and much more from within. I put on twenty-five pounds for the role anyway just to say, 'Okay, I'll do that as well, because I want it to be entertaining and part of the ride that people see when they see a movie like that.'

But that's not really why I'm in it and that's not really what I brought to it. I brought the same kind of discipline that I would to a film like 'The Pianist'. My responsibility is different on a larger level, but not when I show up for work."





I asked Brody whether, should Predators prove successful, he'd return for more hijinks with the alien hunters.

"I don't know if I'm at liberty to say anything, but I'd love to. That was just epic for me. Hopefully it will be successful."

What can you tell me about the movie?

Well it is, for lovers of the original, and I am definitely in that category, it is going to be a return to what this franchise originally set out to do, and that is to entertain people by scaring the sh** out of them, and by making them laugh.


And I think that's what we've done. I think we've made a really good film. And with Robert Rodriguez's participation as executive producer, and with our director, Nimrod Antal, who is just extraordinary, I think they have delivered on the promise of what this franchise set out to do.






And you're playing a death row inmate ... what's his deal?

[Laughing] You know, again ... his name is Walter Stans, and if I've done my job, it will be a character that has red flags around him.

The moment you see him, you just know that you're not going to like this guy, only to make you turn around and fall in love with him.

Robert Rodriguez Confirms Predators Sequel Talk

I'm absolutely confused. From my perspective, Twentieth Century Fox literally dumped Predators, treating it like one of their bastard childs.

Even with the weak PR campaign, the Nimrod Antal sequel managed to score with moviegoers across the Nation, so maybe that's why the studio is perking up an eyebrow over a potential sequel?



Troublemaker Studios producer Robert Rodriguez confirms there are talks.

"The studio said, 'Let's do some other ones. What other story ideas do you have?'" says Rodriguez to IGN at the San Diego Comic-Con.

"Because it was like, let's test out the market with this one. They really wanted it to be pretty contained, pretty scaled-back. They didn't want to put too many of the ideas into it that we could save for a second one.

So we could see what the appetite was, because the bigger movie would actually be what comes following that. That kind of sets up a new storyline, new location and world, and then you can really go crazy from there."





Rodriguez says he has "an idea" of what he will do with the sequel. The next step, he says, is probably to have other writers come in and pitch different versions of his basic premise, along with new concepts.
