View Full Version : Mr. Terrific news - Why I'm beginning to hate Universal

A friend in Germany just e-mailed me to let me know that Mr. Terrific is actually, finally going to be getting an official DVD release. Unfortunately, as far as we know, it is only being released in Germany, and in German and under the title "Immer wenn er Pillen nahm."

No word yet as to whether this 7/17/09 release will have an English language option. Absolutely no word on an American release.

Come on Universal. Let's see some action, A-C-T-I-O-N, action. I ain't gettin' any younger here.

Do you really believe Universal would ever dream of releasing the show here? C'mon, you're smarter than that. Do you want me to list the dozens and dozens of shows that are far, far more popular that Universal owns that they will never release? Shows that were highly rated that ran for years. Just hope that there is an English option and if there is, thank your lucky stars and buy it!

I didn't really believe that it would ever be released in Germany. Though it is far more popular over there, as far as I know it hasn't been run in syndication in the last six years.

Miracles do happen. I never thought I'd see "Good Morning World."

Good Morning World is owned by Sam Denoff, an independent producer. You are comparing apples and elephants. How does the fact that an independently produced show comes out have anything to do with Universal, which owns thousands of series and doesn't even bother with the popular ones? Just to explain, Universal owns the following shows that have not been released:

Six Million Dollar Man
Bionic Woman
Marcus Welby, MD
Run for You Life
It Takes a Thief
The Bold Ones

Do I need to go on? They never even got past 2nd season of Leave it to Beaver and that show is a million times more popular. And the only reason that a bunch of black and white 50s Universal shows have come out is because the 16mm prints fell off the back of a truck on the way to the landfill and companies can get them from collectors and license them from Universal.

Anyway, you didn't answer my question. Is there an English option on the DVDs?

Is there an English option on the DVDs?

That I don't know yet. I've seen the listing on Amazon.de, the German Amazon site, but, of course, I can't read German. Even my German friend is unsure at this point.

My question would be: isn't it possible that some independent DVD producer might license Mr. Terrific or some of these other shows for release so Universal simply collects a fee and assumes no financial risk? Didn't you once say that almost happened with The Pruitts of Southampton?

You asked about my beliefs. I'll tell you what I believed a mere four years ago.

At that point I'd already been searching for Mr. Terrific for about three years. I believed that I had already maxed out on the series; that all I would ever find was the compilation movie, the unaired pilot and the two episodes aired by TVLand.

That was it. There simply didn't seem to be any more episodes available.

It was not faith nor my "belief" that I was destined to find the show that made me keep searching. It was "hope:" a hope that defied the odds. But it doesn't really cost you anything to keep hope, even an impossible hope, alive.

I got lucky, and now we have all 17 episodes (14 in English). This COULD not have happened without my two friends in Germany. It WOULD not have happened if I'd given up hope. I think a lot of fans are amazed by how this once "lost" series has been restored.

So maybe you're right. Maybe this is the last hurrah. This could well be the last batch of new prints we ever see from this show. And maybe I'll luck out again, and there'll be an English option.

But even if there's no such option, I'll keep hoping (and whenever possible pressing) for a complete, pristine set of eps in English.

Again, it all depends on who the studio is and what elements they have available. Universal does license their shows out but it is contingent on what elements they have available. Timeless Media was able to license quite a few shows from Universal but Universal didn't provide any elements. Timeless had to come up with the prints on their own and had to rely on what had made it's way into the collectors market. Recently, Universal has licensed out some shows to Shout Factory, such as Adam-12 and Ironside. In this instance, Universal already had videotape masters that they could give to Shout. Mr. Terrific would most likely not have an existing set of tape masters, other than the 2 episodes that were mastered for TV Land. And film prints of the show do not exist in the collectors world. Of course Universal has the original elements. But their in-house transfer costs are something $5000 per show. So, for 17 shows, minus the 2 they already ran off for TV Land, it would them $75,000. Hey, nothing is impossible but I just think it would be highly unlikely. But, hey, if the German DVDs have English language as an option, then what difference does it make if it comes out here or not?

No, not subtitles. Here's the email I got from amazon germany:

Thank you for contacting Amazon.de.

We are sorry for any misunderstanding.

I have checked the data and found that the DVD "Immer, wenn er Pillen nahm" includes both German and English language, however has no subtitles on it.

You can check yourself if you click on this link:

Tonformat: Deutsch (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono)
Englisch (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono)

I hope this helps you further and wish you a pleasant week.

So, you're in! Now, what can we do about me getting the show Hank?

sbeamish

Wow. Thanks a lot.

And that link answers another of my questions. I imagine that at "425 Minuten" it probably includes all 17 aired episodes. I was a bit concerned about that.

I wish that I could help with Hank. It's been quite a long time since I've seen that show, and I remember really enjoying it. We never missed it at our house. (I think my mom had a thing for the lead actor.)

I'll keep my eyes and ears open though. And, as I said before, don't give up hoping. I was told that Mr. Terrific had probably been destroyed, that it had been locked away forever due to the whole "pill" thing and also that my only hope of seeing it was if TVLand picked it up. - All wrong.

Whoever told you it was destroyed is a moron. Prime time filmed series owned by major studios do not get "destroyed", especially if it's Universal. They don't get rid of anything.

^ I kind of think the guy who said that was thinking about motion pictures and not television. Weren't a lot of old movies destroyed (some lost forever) to retrieve the silver nitrate in the film stock?

Anyway, the latest news on Immer, wenn er Pillen nahm is that it will not be released on July 17. The release has been delayed for an as yet undisclosed length of time. Amazon.de has pulled the listing and stopped taking pre-orders.

I don't know much more except that fans are being assured the series will eventually be released. For some reason, another series from that time period has to come out first.

I imagine it's something contractual, because I know of no "prerequisite" series for Mr. Terrific.

Time will tell.

I just opened this because it's a thread complaining about Universal and I have a lot of complaints about the whole company. :-P

I agree that Universal's home video and music division have gone straight into the crapper. The only DVD set I've seen done well (Twice!) was Back to the Future. They made the Sliders S1/S2 set cheesy as hale and overpriced it at $100, only to be sold at big box stores at $19.99 2 years later.

As for the music division, there are still Robert Palmer remasters they've been withholding on for 3 years and the fans are still waiting for a release. I remember when they announced the release in 2006! They deleted entries for all of the Out Of Print albums they were selling in the marketplace on Amazon during the Christmas season so maybe things are looking up (not likely). :(

Of course I was oversimplifying things quite a bit, when I titled this thread. I don't really "hate" Universal. I'm just (understandably) frustrated that this one special show from my childhood, the one that I would most especially love to own, has been so difficult to get my hands on.

It's been a long, hard search for me, but it may almost be coming to an end. Still, there's going to be a bit of expense and fuss, when the set is finally released.

I'll be looking to invest in a PAL player. I guess you can get them here. In fact, I'm pretty sure a friend of mine owns one. He had to get it to run the massive Laurel & Hardy DVD collection he got from Europe. And I'll probably buy at least 2 sets of the show. I'll need one to watch, while I send the other out to be transferred to NTSC for backup.

I don't really mind the expense for this show, but the fuss is going to wear on me. It would be so much easier if I could just drive to the mall and buy a set that would work on my current DVD player.

But I guess that's part of the fun of being a collector. And it makes the payoff that much sweeter.

Wow, you really make things far more complicated than they have to be. Firstly, you can do an internet search on the type of DVD player you have and find a hack code to break the region coding in about 30 seconds. Secondly, you can easily find a program to break the region encoding on your computer so you could burn copies with your regular DVD burner. I used to have one a few years ago when I was renting stuff to copy like Ally McBeal.

I don't want "well known" series from that time. I have them already. The shows I'm after, that I only have a few episodes of, are the not so well known ones, like Many Happy Returns, The Cara Williams Show, Double Life of Henry Phyfe, Love on a Rooftop, The Jean Arthur Show, Mickey, Hank, The Tycoon, Run Buddy Run, The Good Guys and so on.

Well, I've got a friend who can do all of that stuff, and I'm sure he'll offer, when the discs come in. Personally, I've never been any good at all with technology. As far as computers go, I've just been too lazy to bother learning much more than just how to surf through websites that interest me.

(I'm also a born worrier. Even when there are no problems, I'll find one.)

Again, we'll have to wait and see. You know, what's "well known" in the States isn't always the same as what's "well known" in other countries. For example, I've been told that in Germany Mr. Terrific is VERY well known, while Gilligan is pretty much forgotten. It's quite the opposite here.

While I'd love to see most of the shows you listed again, this "other" series is just a roadblock to me. I can live with what's available from just about every other show. I just can't wait to finally have all of Mr. Terrific; good prints and in English.

The fact that you are thisclose to actually getting it, is amazing to me. I would have never thought you'd ever get that show. For one thing, Universal sucks and they are the worst at doing anything with their older shows. For another, even in the 80s when cable networks were buying shows like Captain Nice, Second Hundred Years, Occasional Wife, Camp Runamuck and tons of other rarities, you didn't see Mr. Terrific or any other short-lived old Uni shows. So for this to actually be coming out is nothing short of miraculous. It's not a show I ever watched, although I will pick it up. I'm happy for someone to be getting their big want. For me, right now, I would say my biggest wants would be things like Way Out, Bus Stop and Slattery's People. MOst of the sitcoms from my childhood were better when I was 8 then they are now.

Yeah, all things considered, I've been pretty darn lucky. (Even when you just take into account the episodes I've already received from my friends in Germany.)

I had a friend at work (sadly he passed away last year; far too young) who often talked about The Double Life of Henry Phyfe. I offered to lend him the few episodes I had, but he refused. He said he had his childhood memories, and he didn't want to taint them with an adult perspective.

I've experienced this with a lot of old shows. They simply aren't what I remembered. But I've got to say I still love watching MT. I'm sure, when I was eight years old, I didn't notice how awful most of the scripts were. But I still just love the premise and the theme song. And when you look at what they were given to work with script wise, I'd say the actors and directors all deserve to be commended.

We all have our shows that we love, even though they aren't the greatest. But to us they have a special feeling. I recently had a chance to view the remaining episodes of Nancy that I don't have in my collection. It's not a good show by any means but I was very happy to have the opportunity to see the rest of the episodes. And while the show really isn't very good, I still enjoyed them. So I know how you feel. But then I remember the first time I got to see Camp Runamuck as an adult. Horrible. And I mentioned Hank. Well, I've seen about 4 of them and it's also a pretty bad show to be honest about it. Face it, what you think is funny as a kid isn't going to be very funny to an adult.

^Here's to guilty pleasures and treasured memories. It's nice when you can retain them both.

When I picked up my first episode of Phyfe a few years back, I thought that, again, it was a show with a pretty poor script. But Red Buttons and Fred Clark floored me. They were both great; really funny. Then I got a few more eps and found none of them quite measured up to that first one. They still had their moments, but I guess I was tiring of the whole situation.

As time went by, I found that this "disillusion" hadn't completely wiped out my precious, childhood memories. Though I have no particular, burning desire to go dig up more episodes (I would still watch any that fall into my lap), I can still look back fondly on those early days when the show was oh so important to me.

60s sitcoms that I watched that don't hold up:

Baileys of Balboa
It's About Time
Camp Runamuck
Hank
Blondie

Ones that do hold up:

Occasional Wife
He and She
Good Morning World
Love on a Rooftop
Accidental Family

Terrible then, still bad now:

Ugliest Girl in Town
Pruitts of Southampton
Rango
Grindl

I haven't actually seen it since I was a kid. I picked up one episode in a trade a few years ago, and I remember getting some laughs out of it, but the print was just so bad that I couldn't really enjoy it.

The one thing I really seem to remember (from my childhood) about the show was this one, particular scene in which most of the regular cast members were stuck in an elevator. Jack Cassidy had a panic attack and went into a hysterical rant that I laughed at for about a week.

At least I believe that was on He and She. It's been a long time.

It's here: a real, OFFICIAL DVD release of Mr. Terrific!

I absolutely can't believe my luck. (Normally it doesn't run anywhere near this good.)

Tomorrow's a work day for us postal employees, so I don't have time to go through the whole set tonight. I've already run the 3 eps which, up until now, have only been available as German dubs as well as the 1 ep that was partially in German.

I also ran the 1st ep: Matchless which is (disappointingly) edited very similarly to the TVLand print that's been circulating for years.

tvobscurities has asked me to review the set for his website, so I'll let you know when I get that done for him.

In the meantime, I hope to just be able to find the time to sit back and enjoy.

I don't believe that show's been released yet; nor has the title been announced as far as I know. Ofcourse "Immer, wenn er Pillen nahm" (Mr. Terrific) wound up being released on the originally scheduled date, so I'm just as happy. (July 17, BTW, is actually supposed to be Stanley Beamish's birthday. I imagine it was just a coincedence that the DVD came out that day, but I'll just pretend it was a birthday present to my childhood hero.)

In the meantime, "Run, Buddy, Run" was released on DVD in Germany, I believe, on July 1. Unfortunately it is not only MORE expensive than the "Mr. Terrific" DVD, it DOES NOT have an English language option.

We'll just have to keep waiting on that one.

As for Mr. Terrific: 4 more eps and I can write my review.

A little difficult to say. I bought TWO sets, plus I paid an extra 30 Euros for International Express shipping. (That's how I got it on the actual release date.)

I'd pre-ordered, so they just debited my wife's Amazon account after shipping.

But I think 1 Euro usually comes out to around $1.30-$1.40 USD.

Cost for me was $45.24 (US dollars). Mine came today, and all I can say is yipppeee! Oh to be in second grade again, watching my favorite superheroes! Now I have all four complete hero sets: Batman, Green Hornet, Captain Nice, and now Mr. Terrific!

Oh, if I'd only known how complicated life was going to get, I would really have made it a point to enjoy those carefree years. But now, at least, I can watch my "Mr. Terrific" and enjoy remembering.

Anyway, my review is now up on the Television Obscurities website, so anyone who's interested can take a look.

Here (http://www.tvobscurities.com/2009/07/dvd-review-mr-terrific-the-complete-series/) is a direct link. It is a fantastic review. A big thank you to sbeamish for writing it and for all his hard work in getting the rest of us information about the release of Mr. Teriffic on DVD.

Mr. Terrific would most likely not have an existing set of tape masters, other than the 2 episodes that were mastered for TV Land. And film prints of the show do not exist in the collectors world.

I'd been searching high and low for many years, and it certainly seemed that this was true. Just today, however, a 16mm print of the aired pilot sold on eBay.

Unfortunately, I only had the second highest bid, so I won't be adding this to my collection. It's especially regretful, because the seller claims that this is a complete print; over 30 minutes long. The print on the official DVD release is edited and just over 24 minutes.

In addition, the seller included some digital frame captures which seem to indicate this 16mm print has slightly different closing credits than the DVD and TVLand prints of "Matchless." I'd always thought that there was something strange about these closing credits. The actress Susan Seaforth appears in the credits, but I've never been able to spot her in the episode as it exists in current circulation, nor in the compilation movie "The Pill Caper."

I can only hope that another print pops up sometime soon or that the guy who actually bought the film has it transferred to DVD and releases it into the collector's market.

A big thanks to your review. I don't think I would have found out about the German release without it.
It is a pity an American release looks unlikely. I'd love to see the original opening in pristine condition. Uncut episodes could be a little unlikely so the German DVDs are the next best thing.
And the music is great. Gerald Fried's underscore reminds me of so many Gilligan's Island episodes. Especially his Russian riff. And I can't stop humming the theme after I've watched an episode.
Great memories.

A scientist both wise and bold
Set out to cure the common cold
Instead he found this power pill
Which he said most certainly will
Turn a lamb in to a lion
Like an eagle he'll be flyin'
Solid steel will be like putty
It will work on anybody

But then 'twas found this potent pill
Made the strongest men quite ill
So the secret search began
To find the one and only man

What they found made them squeamish
For only Stanley Beamish
A weak and droopy daffodil
Could take the special power pill
That sent him soaring through the skies
Fighting foes and fighting spies

When he took the pill specific
It made him the most prolific
Terrific
Mr. Terrific.
