View Full Version : FINALLY!!!! The Lucy Show Press Release!
McGillicuddy 04-20-2009, 10:13 AM The Lucy Show official first season has f-i-n-a-l-l-y....been formally announced for release July 21st!!!!! I'm pinching myself, afraid I'm dreaming. It has been a long, long wait. I don't remember the last time I was this excited over a news item at TVSHOWSONDVD.com!
Jude The Obscure 04-20-2009, 10:24 AM THIS WAS THE MOST EXCELLENT NEWS TO SEE IN MY INBOX THIS MORNING!!!!
SO ECSTATIC!!!!!!!!
I CHANGED MY AVATAR TO REFLECT MY EXCITEMENT
Kasey 04-20-2009, 02:40 PM ...and so happy they are NOT splitting into volumes, like My Three Sons, Mod Squad, etc. I only hope they did not have to edit the episodes for music clearance. "Lucy is a Chaperone" is one my favorites this season, and I really want "Big Girls Don't Cry" to be intact.
McGillicuddy 04-20-2009, 02:50 PM Yeah, thats the one thing we don't know about yet. There weren't any problems with music clearances in I Love Lucy at all that I know of, so I hope its the same with LS.
likewow 04-20-2009, 04:23 PM I am ecstatic!!! The packaging is fantastic, and the message from CBS is a nice touch. It's great to know they took all the fans' messages to heart!
Jude The Obscure 04-20-2009, 11:43 PM Persistence by the fans really paid off and I think CBS will be shocked at the sales! and immediately order the transfer of season 2 to HD to prep it for DVD release :D
comedyfreak 04-21-2009, 03:47 AM I can't wait!!!! This I must get!

drewfussclass101 04-21-2009, 03:24 PM I am so excited! I love the cover art. The big picture is from my favorite episode Lucy puts up a Tv antenna! I can not wait for this. this will be the longest two/three months of my life. LOL but what episode is the picture from where lucy is wrapped in a towel with a mud mask on?
likewow 04-21-2009, 04:06 PM That image is from another all time favorite episode, "Lucy Puts in a Shower."
Fantastic. Its on my want list.
Seeing the CBS comment that they used the original film negatives gives me great hope that we will see increadibly sharp images, like most of us have not seen before for this show. If any have seen the first season of Perry Mason on DVD the difference in quality of the picture between the DVD using the original film negatives and the film (or video) now used in syndication is striking. I hope that also means that these shows run the full original length and not some syndicated length. Though nowhere does CBS' announcement use the word "unedited". The lack of that word gives me some pause.
ethelmaepotter 04-21-2009, 08:32 PM Do we know the retail price? It is says nothing about suggested price in the press release and it isn't on Amazon yet.

If CBS transferred these from the original film negatives, then yes, they are unedited! These will not be the Daytime CBS prints that Nick at Nite used from 92-96 (and which I have on tape). This is just about the best DVD news of the year--along with MPI putting out Here's Lucy and the Lucy Specials--these companies will all benefit from Lucy fans everywhere buying it up! :)
Jude The Obscure 04-21-2009, 10:20 PM TVShowsonDVD just sent an updated e-mail which includes the Youtube link for the video scroll of the above listing even more extras, including an interview with Jimmy Garrett, who played Jerry Carmichael!! This set is gonna rock!!!!!!

Check out TVshowsonDVD.com for a video clip from the DVD release. I still can't believe it!
Jeff225 04-21-2009, 10:26 PM Jude, you beat me to it by 4 minutes. Sorry for the duplicate info.
Jude The Obscure 04-21-2009, 10:55 PM don't worry about it, Jeff! :)
And hey, cool, you're from Louisiana too :D
McGillicuddy 04-21-2009, 11:22 PM Thankyou Jeff, I just checked it out. It just keeps getting better! I didn't notice any difference in the box art though, not that it matters.
comedyfreak 04-22-2009, 12:04 AM This has the theme the message is scrolling.

Just last night a local channel that reruns ILL and "We Love Lucy" also has the rights to the b&w episodes of TLC and aired the first one. Without the original opening - the kalidascope opening - but it was still nice to see. And how strange after the annoucement of the series on DVD. Now if MPI would just say when HL will be coming out!

That is a package that is distributed by CBS Distribution (and you can see it listed that way at their bible website!)--it's like the first season of TLS is a continuation of ILL in their eyes...Ricky has died and Ethel divorced Fred
LittleRickyII 04-24-2009, 05:46 PM If CBS transferred these from the original film negatives, then yes, they are unedited!
The episodes of "The Lucy Show" that CBS released on home video some years ago were also crystal clear, and unedited, with the original openings, etc.
storrs19 04-27-2009, 11:10 AM About freakin' time! It has only been two years since we wrapped up the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. I wonder why it took so long to get this on dvd? CBS should realise that Lucy fans would want her second series just as much as her first (if not more). I can't wait to see these episodes unedited and crisp and clear. While I liked all six seasons of The Lucy Show I think Season One is my favorite of them all.
Jude The Obscure 04-27-2009, 12:34 PM The episodes of "The Lucy Show" that CBS released on home video some years ago were also crystal clear, and unedited, with the original openings, etc.
Yes, I had those! loved them but had to sell them when I was in need of funds (no use in going into details). Just glad we are finally getting official releases!

And somewhere after she buried Ricky Lucy must have changed her last name and Ethel must have changed her first AND last name! I liked the package of the 1st season of the shows being added, but it must be confusing to people who do not know the difference!
Jude The Obscure 04-27-2009, 01:14 PM I used to belong to the Usenet I Love Lucy group and we'd have discussions about the Lucy Show all the time--how everytime Viv mentioned Ralph, we secretly knew she meant Fred  And when Lucy mentioned how her dead husband knew that she was a crier, cajoler, needler, whiner, etc we secretly knew she was referring to Ricky
I just ordered this from Amazon. One of the reviewers had a listing of the extras. I do not know where he got the information but assuming it is true this is trully an amazing set. On top of getting the entire first season in one box(not split like My Three Sons or Perry Mason), use of original 35mm film negatives as the source we get the features listed below. I especially like the ability to play the episodes as originally broadcast with vintage network openings, closings and cast commercials.
This is the way vintage shows should be treated. This is the standard against which all other DVD releases of vintage shows should be judged.
Special Features:
Newly Recorded Interview with Lucie Arnaz
Newly Recorded Interview with Jimmy Garrett
1962 "Opening Night" Special
Clip featuring the long-lost headdress scene recreated from "I Love Lucy"
Clip of Lucy introducing her new series and dancing with stars Jack Benny, Andy Griffith, Gary Moore & Danny Thomas
Original Network Sponsor Openings
Original Network Sponsor Closing
Original Cast Commercials
Vintage Network Promos
Segment on merchandise from "The Lucy Show"
Cast Biographies
Production Notes
Additionally, the episodes included on this DVD release are completely unedited with run-times of just slightly under 26 minutes per episode. There is even a feature to play the episodes as originally broadcast with vintage network openings, closings and cast commercials!
TV DVD Fan 06-10-2009, 07:50 PM Yeah, that list seems pretty accurate. Last TSoD update on the set mentioned all of those extras besides the headdress scene thing and the merchandise segment. It's going to be a good set, and MPI's release of 2 of Lucy's TV movies and their release of Here's Lucy Season One makes this summer full of Lucille Ball related DVDs. And, not sure if this was mentioned here before, but I'll say it anyway: MPI has committed to releasing EVERY season of Here's Lucy. Great news for a series that was considered a lost cause ever since the dismal sales that the best of set from Shout Factory got. Just goes to show how dedicated fans like us can make a difference.
McGillicuddy 06-10-2009, 08:54 PM I have been very pleased with the outstanding and thourough job that was done with I Love Lucy, including L&D Comedy Hour, and have for so long wanted it continue on With The Lucy Show! I'm thrilled with all these features.

Actually, that's not true. Sales of the Here's Lucy DVD set from Shout Factory actually exceeded their expectations. It was due to some personal issues I'm not going to get into that Shout did not issue any further volumes. The Ball/Arnaz estate were waiting for the contract with Shout expire to let another company -- in this case, MPI -- take over.
