View Full Version : Should we Have A Controversial Forum On SO?
Janice Johnson 04-07-2009, 07:33 PM I once had a very adult, graphic thread about my literal kid sister, acting like a whore and that our family needed help..... It was immediately closed because kiddies under 16 might be reading it.... But I was really serious, so i was upset that it had gotten closed. I am thinking that maybe the administrators and moderators could have an 'adult" forum for people 16 or older..... :/
bandito 04-07-2009, 07:36 PM Why??
Janice Johnson 04-07-2009, 07:39 PM So when we have 'adult" and serious threads, they won't be closed because kids might be reading it. it should be something just for adults on SO, who have some serious adult questions.
Hollow 04-07-2009, 07:45 PM this site is supposed to be PG-13.
Janice Johnson 04-07-2009, 07:47 PM Sarah, I meant should we have a little forum called- "Chit chat-Adult Forum!" like we have "Chit chat-Random Posts".....
MonarC 04-07-2009, 07:51 PM If that was possible, a kid who was under that age could easily lie and say that they are over the age just to get in and read the rated-X threads. That could cause problems.
Jonathan 04-07-2009, 07:57 PM No. You're missing the point of the site - Sitcoms Online!

Hollow 04-07-2009, 08:02 PM Sarah, I meant should we have a little forum called- "Chit chat-Adult Forum!" like we have "Chit chat-Random Posts".....
that wouldn't really be separating anything. kids could just as easily lie about their birthdate and view the adult board. there's no reason anyone should need to talk about anything x-rated here. talking about problems involving sex, such as a promiscuous loved one, shouldn't include graphic details.
JamesG 04-07-2009, 08:07 PM They have plenty of other forums out there... and I mean plenty... for more adult related things.
Controversial.. what politics isn't controversial enough already?
Seriously, it takes hassle to run adult related boards. You have to set up disclaimers of being 18 or 21+ depending on what state you're in and it just isn't necessary for this forum.
Janice 04-07-2009, 08:18 PM No. You're missing the point of the site - Sitcoms Online!

Doodyville10019 04-07-2009, 09:08 PM I understand this is supposed to be a PG forum, but personally, I'm just fed up with "protecting" children (more like overprotecting children if you ask me) - let's face it, they're gonna learn about adult stuff - if not from their parents, then from someone else. Better from us than some nutcase out on the street.
spunkygirl 04-07-2009, 09:10 PM Why are there kids here that young anyways? Besides if they're intent on reading something they shouldn't, what's to stop them?
Why not put a disclaimer in a thread title? No the site shouldn't have pornographic stuff or stuff that crosses the line, but if someone needs to talk about something, they should be able too, within reason

Absolutely I remember that show! Only got to see it once when I was a kid - it was on very late at night (I think about 10:30 or 11:30 or something like that) on a weekend night.
Brad Russ 04-07-2009, 09:18 PM There's already a controversial board on this site. It's called the politics board. It's gotten so controversial over there, that I hardly even visit there anymore. Janice 04-07-2009, 09:29 PM TJ has decided that he wants his site to be a PG-13 site. He doesn't need or want the headaches. This is a sitcom site. Chit Chat is just one portion of the site. People talk about what they want anyway, for the most part. What do people want to talk about that they can't? Chit Chit is pretty liberal for the most part, as far as what's discussed.

it's sitcoms (which are usually either G or PG rated) that initially attract members here, so it isn't unreasonable for kids to be here. i think most regulars here are in their 20's nowadays, but back around 2001, most active members were about 11-15. from what i can tell, people are already allowed to talk about anything within reason. i remember a "things you're ashamed of" thread from last year that had a lot of stories involving sex, though no graphic details. it wasn't closed and there were no public warnings.
Waterston_Fan 04-07-2009, 09:34 PM Yeah, I don't want this site to be closed down because someone complained due to a thread that is adult. I'll give you adult..

Fleet 04-08-2009, 01:13 AM Instead of having an "adult forum," how about a thread in which all the female SO members post photos of themselves wearing bikinis? :D :happyface
Janice Johnson 04-08-2009, 01:41 AM It was just a suggestion....*Hides in corner* :(
Sharop 04-08-2009, 07:05 AM Why are there kids here that young anyways?
Like safety pin said, most people would find this place by looking for information on sitcoms, so that would attract kids here. SO as a whole isn't an adult site by any means; there are probably kids under 12 who visit (but don't post.) I'm actually surprised that we don't have any kids in the 10-13 age bracket posting. In 2004-2005 there were quite a few members such as EmoJoe, Michael and Niki, who were aged 11-13. I believe the former two joined when they were 11 years old.
TripperFan 04-08-2009, 01:43 PM Actually I like that this site has all ages on it. Even us "geezers" can learn from the youngest of posters.
Sure I've had moments in the wee hours of the morning when I get giddy and want to post some pretty wild stuff, but I've got email to do that and email addresses of the people I'd want to see it so I just send out a crazy email.
Don't feel badly Janice J. - we're not knocking down your suggestion - if anything, it created a fun and interesting thread. ;) (like so many of yours do)
browneyes106 04-08-2009, 03:50 PM I kind of think it would be cool if there was a controversial or more a serious topic forum here.

First of all, can we change this board's name to "General Discussion" like most sane forums? I only seem to see people name their OT forums "Chit-Chat" if they're from that Sonic SatAM fandom or some such nonsense.
I don't see why this board can't be more adult in some respects up to this point since a majority of the posters are now over the age of 21. I'd like to see this board become more like Prince.Org's General Discussion board. I love lurking over at that forum and love that they aren't afraid to discuss a wide range of topics and the moderators are very liberal on what gets locked and what can stay open. To be perfectly honest some of the most hilarious discussions come out of sex talk.
I'm afraid that Sitcoms Online is starting to turn into a clone of Toon Zone, which I left years ago because I couldn't stand the way the mods ran things.

this board has been called "chit chat" since it was added in 2001. it's not going to change, nor is it "turning into" anything. it's been this way since the beginning.

Sign up there. Sounds right up your alley. The moderators here don't decide anything regarding content. We enforce the rules. You'd have to direct your comments or suggestions to TJ, the owner. He makes the rules. There's nothing wrong with the name, Chit Chat either.
I'm afraid that Sitcoms Online is starting to turn into a clone of Toon Zone, which I left years ago because I couldn't stand the way the mods ran things.

Remember a few years ago, some members here left and started an "anythng goes" site. They were so happy that they could swear their heads off. Sure enough, forums were locked, fights galore. I even signed up undercover, and got a few PMs from the owner. One was because I told another member he shouldn't use the n word. I was accused of race baiting, lol. It was nuts. The place went to hell. You need rules. There are plenty of raunchy sites. There's no need to go to a clean site and complain. This is what it is. Many people lose sight of the fact that this is a sitcom site. It has a reputation to uphold.
OH Nuts! 04-12-2009, 10:34 AM I came to SO, more than anything else, discuss sitcoms I like with other fans - and most of my fav shows are G rated. I like that SO's G rated; having this standard helps keep things civil. And has been suggested, moving away from this standard could open up a can of worms. If I want to discuss X rated stuff, there are plenty of sites tailored for that purpose.
The only dilemma here is trying to discuss a show like "Sex And The City", which has had some very "adult" themes. The best I could think of is to refer to X rated acts or topics obliquely, where only another viewer who has seen the ep. really knows what I'm talking about.

That's why I originally came to SO Rich. I wanted to talk with people who liked some of the same shows that I did. Most of the shows I liked aired from the '50's through the '80's. There are some R rated sitcoms on the site but people can talk about them in a PG-13 way. I do watch some of them too but they aren't as good as some of the classics from the past. I didn't even pay much atention to CC when I first came to SO. I came over here eventually. There have been some adult topics discussed through the years but there are limits. There is no reason to be graphic about them.

I personally like the name "Chit Chat." I can't see it changing anytime soon anyway.
I understand that you like raunchier discussions but this site isn't the place for them, it never has been. I think TJ wants to attract both kids and adults (and some kids will probably check the place out because of the sitcom aspect) which means that members can't talk about absolutely anything they want to.
I think members have a lot of freedom with what to discuss here.

I won't deny that it could get pretty wild over there. The Random threads ( and not just ours) had a habit of taking a life of it's own. lol We did go over the line over there on some occasions. In retrospect, we probably shouldn't have done it. It was in the random board though and most people wouldn't read a lot of it if they weren't posting in it. Most of the stuff over there would get pretty boring to an outsider who didn't enjoy talking about Tv shows and other things from the '70's and '80's. We really did have a lot of fun over there. But I'm not making any excuses. TJ has stated on more than one occasion that he wants this to be a PG-13 site.

Sharop 04-13-2009, 06:43 PM This site has prospered well the way it has and if threads containing in-depth, graphic discussions of sex and other things were allowed, it just wouldn't feel right to me. That may be my dislike of change causing me to think that, but it would seem out of place to me.
beautifuldreamer 04-13-2009, 08:33 PM who's to say we should stop them? Are you saying that we should let kids get into whatever they want without any kind of supervision?
What I'm trying to say is that it shouldn't be up to people on the internet to censor anything at all.... It is a parent's responsibility to teach their child what is appropriate for them and what is not. This is how I was taught, my parents had rules about using the computer, we talked openly about the innappropriate things that are on the internet. Does this mean I was a little angel and never saw anything I shouldn't? Of course not. But if I ever did intentionally come into contact with something that was adult when I was underage, I would get grossed out and realize, "yeah, that's inappropriate, not just because of my age, but it isn't right for any age." Something doesn't become less inappropriate once you turn 18. I guess sometimes I had to see it for myself to truly come to grips with just how vulgar the internet can be... now, I am fully aware of it, and I think I am able to make pretty smart decisions.
Unfortunately, I know many parents who don't give a crap what their kids see on the internet, pornography, etc.... you name it! It's shocking. Therefore, I think if a kid's parents don't stop them, who am I to get involved in that?... more power to them!

Anyone who owns a website decides on what content will be allowed, and what will not. TJ decided that his sitcom website would be PG-13. Your history, anyone's history, has nothing to do with his decision. It has nothing to do with parents and their responsibilities either. It has to do with a decision a man made regarding his website. It's really nothing personal.

Sorry, I love to debate, and I think I do tend to go overboard.:D
I was taking argument with people saying we shouldn't have the board because there is the possibility that kids will see it. In reality, it's TJ's decision to do what he wants with his website... You're right, it isn't personal.

Janice Johnson 04-21-2009, 05:45 AM I recently had some controversial threads that were immeadiately closed. They were pretty morbid because I was in a morbid mood. They were talking about death and drowning....
so elektrikkxx 04-21-2009, 02:23 PM I think it is up to the creator of a website, what type of content is/should be allowed on that website. I was 11 when I first came on this board, and my brother is that age now and I don't think that there should be overly explicit conversations here, although these days with the things that kids that age hear from their friends in school and on television, I would question if anything here (even explicit) would be new to them :O
Janice Johnson 04-21-2009, 09:56 PM I see your point, even though 11 year olds are growing up a lot faster today than say, 11 year olds of a decade ago.
