Fleetwood Mac frontwoman Stevie Nicks has blasted Britney Spears - insisting the pop singer has never had to work hard for her career.

Nicks, whose hedonistic lifestyle in the 1970s and 80s saw her labeled as one of rock's craziest characters, is not convinced Spears' tumultuous past qualifies her as a real music icon and claims the singer hasn't put in the hours she did as an upcoming artist.

She tells TV show Extra, "You have to pay your dues to be a real rock star. It's different in that Britney did not join a band when she was 18 and practice every day for five hours Monday through Friday and then play gigs Friday, Saturday and Sunday."

Spears - who shot to fame as a teenager - successfully relaunched her career in 2008 following a turbulent few years in which she divorced husband Kevin Federline, lost custody of her two sons and was stripped of control over her affairs following a public breakdown.

No, Britney didn't join a band when she was 18 like you did Stevie because she was already out there selling millions of CDs by that time you friggin' bonehead!!

Britney was what, 11 when she was on Star Search? Guess there was no practising for that or the Mickey Mouse Club that she was on weekly. No need to practice for her tours and videos at all.

Obviously Stevie's still feeling the effects of the acid she dropped back in the days and moreover, sounds like she's green with jealousy. Not a good look on a chubby, old hasbeen at all.

Didn't she do so much coke (Stevie) that she once injected it into herself for a quicker high?

Probably! Back then, idiots were even shooting themselves up with beer for a quick drunk so anything's possible.

Maybe it's time to unhook the I.V. Stevie darling! ;) :p

I think so. A shame, really. I always thought that Stevie was so beautiful back in the day. ohno:

Everybody did drugs in the 70s. It was the norm. Even the Rolling Stones are a great example of that decade itself.

Hey, I could care less what drugs and how many they did in their lives, but don't go after Britney for not working hard to get where she is. I loved Fleetwood Mac, but I'll also defend Britney as being a hard worker.

Drugs don't define you as a good rock star.

I agree with Stevie Nicks for only one thing....Britney is an untalented ****!

But...Stevie Nicks should just only use her mouth when singing for Fleetwood Mac.

The Landslide did bring her down!

I don't get why Stevie is trying to compare Britney to a rock artist.

Exactly...like comparing apples and oranges.

She has no idea what she's gone through to get to where she is. She WISHES she had the amount of success that Britney's had at half of this hag's age.

ikr?

Say what you want about Britney's music/singing but you can't say that she didn't work her ass off to get where she is. Stevie Nicks obviously just wants a little free publicity.

Off-Broadway shows at 7...moving from Louisiana to New York
MMC as a tween
Recording and touring non-stop for seven years, taking a three year "break" and doing it all over again.

People may criticize Britney for several things but her work ethic they cannot. The girl was institutionalized, bald headed and crazy but managed to release a hit and argueable her best album (Blackout) which spun off two hit songs ("Gimme More" and "Piece of Me.") Most artists wouldn't have been able to do that.

According to the RIAA (http://www.riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?resultpage=1&table=tblTopArt&action=), Fleetwood Mac sold 48.5M units, Stevie Nicks 10.5M and Britney Spears 32M.

I like both Stevie and Britney. I agree Britney is a pop artist and shouldn't get compared to a rock artist. Usually people in the pop genre take different methods to get a career started. Britney and her family invested a lot in getting her career started. It's becoming more common for older singers and bands to criticize or share their feelings on younger artists.
