TORONTO -- The son of one of the notorious Hanson brothers from the movie "Slap Shot" has joined the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Christian Hanson, the son of Dave from "Slap Shot" movie fame, signed a two-year, entry-level deal with the team Tuesday. He recently completed his college career at Notre Dame and was an undrafted free agent.

Hanson is 6-foot-4 center who weighs 228 pounds.

Hanson had a 16 goals and 15 assists in 37 games for the Fighting Irish this season. The native of Venetia, Pa., spent four years at the school.

I've seen him play in all 4 games in which he's dressed for the Leafs and he hasn't looked too bad. He scored his first NHL goal vs New Jersey last Tue. on Martin Brodeur (of all people!) who just happens to be his childhood hero. At home, he has a shrine in his basement dedicated to Brodeur and I would expect that the puck that went by him will be part of the collection soon. He followed up his goal with an assist in last night's 3-1 loss to Buffalo so it looks like he could be a keeper but he may need some time in the minors next year before he can be a full-time NHL player. However, if you're expecting another "Slap Shot" Hanson Brothers clone, prepare to be disappointed. His style of game is a lot more suited to scoring rather than fighting although I'm sure he can handle himself if the occasion called for it. Just don't look for it on a regular basis.
