Hollywood bosses have given the green light to another new Star Trek movie - a month before the latest sci-fi instalment hits cinemas.
The highly-anticipated prequel is the first new venture in the franchise since 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis and is due for a global release on 8 May.
But officials at Paramount Pictures are so sure the picture will be a hit, they have commissioned on a script for a follow-up - hiring a team of screenwriters including Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof.
Lost creator JJ Abrams, who directed the latest film, has also signed on to produce the next movie. It is not known whether he will be behind the camera of the second picture.
Lindelof tells Variety, "There's obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn't even come out yet. But we're so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed."
The new big screen version of the iconic space series sees young actor Chris Pine take on the lead role of Captain James T. Kirk, the part made famous by William Shatner in the original 1960s show.

comedyfreak 03-31-2009, 11:28 PM Nothing new really, I expected a sequel given the fact that this new one is highly anticipated. I hope they continue in the young Kirk's time period.
catlover79 03-31-2009, 11:48 PM They sure don't waste any time, do they??
comedyfreak 04-01-2009, 12:13 AM Not at all, LOL. I guess they're banking on this one to be a run away hit.
browneyes106 04-01-2009, 01:46 AM I have good feelings about the new Star Trek movie. I think a sequel if it is written well.
JamesG 04-01-2009, 07:42 AM Shatner For Star Trek Sequel?
1 April 2009 12:42 AM, PDT
Hollywood bosses are hoping that William Shatner will make a cameo appearance in a future Star Trek movie.
A highly-anticipated prequel to 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis is due for a global release on 8 May.
But officials at Paramount Pictures are so sure the picture will be a hit, they have commissioned a script for a follow-up - and are reportedly keen to get Shatner, who starred as Captain James T. Kirk in the original 1960s show, to be in the movie.
A source tells Britain's Daily Express newspaper, "It's well known Bill was disappointed not to get a cameo (in the 2009 film). But now Paramount Pictures has been given the go-ahead for a sequel and there are hopes he'll make a brief appearance."

JamesG 01-09-2010, 01:19 PM It was announced today that the STAR TREK sequel will come out before the Mayan calendar expires!
Published on Saturday, January 9, 2010
Hey folks, Harry here with a wonderful factoid... You see, the Untitled STAR TREK sequel is scheduled to be released May 29th, 2012. Thank God! I don't know about you, but I very much want to see one last trek into JJ's special brand of STAR TREK.
Now, it is also true that JJ is not officially helming this one, at least that hasn't been formally announced or decided yet. That they have a date, most likely, probably, could maybe mean they have a notion now of what they're going to attempt to make. But that's if you believe one needs to know what they're shooting, if it is up to snuff, etc - PRIOR to having a date put out there.
That's the spectacular year of Pixar's NEWT, Disney's KING OF THE ELVES, the alleged 4th PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, CARS 2, The second film of the HOBBIT stuff they're doing in New Zealand, ANT-MAN possibly, GHOSTBUSTERS 3, HEAVY METAL, and on and on and on...
Some of those are dreams, like IRON MAN 3, but then JOHN CARTER OF MARS also hits. And will we get AVATWO before the Mayans press boom on that Earth-Busting Obsidian Doomsday Bomb!
But at the very least, it is being planned that there will be 1 last STAR TREK before the end of everything!

comedyfreak 01-10-2010, 03:15 AM Hopefully the story and script will be good.
Hopefully the story and script will be good.
I agree. But, it looks like they've given themselves enough time to work on it, and not rushed into production in an attempt to get it out sooner than later.
*sigh* I guess I can wait another 2 and a half years...
;)
JamesG 03-28-2010, 08:50 PM Star Trek 2 coming soon...
28 March 2010
Pegg was at the Jameson Empire Awards to collect the Best Sci-fi gong for Star Trek, so what better time to ask for an update on the next Trek instalment?
"I bug J.J. on a regular basis and he just fobs me off," he laughed.
"But I saw Zoe Saldana recently and she reckons that it's going to be soon. I would imagine it'll be toward the end of the year, but I can't guarantee it."
So there you have it, Trekkers: 'soon-ish' is the word, although with no news yet on when Alex Kurtzman and Rob Orci's script will be delivered, don't expect to reboard the Enterprise until the second half of 2012 at the earliest.

Scott Bakula was in Enterprise not Star Trek Voyager. Voyager starred Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway. Enterprise was the most recent StarTrek series and was set prior to Captain Kirks time. It starred Bakula as Captain Jonathon Archer.
JamesG 07-21-2010, 10:47 AM Star Trek Sequel Boldly Begins Filming in January 2011
July 20, 2010 | By: Bryan Enk
The crew of the Enterprise will blast off the new year in style.
In an interview with Hollywood.com, Bruce Greenwood revealed that Paramount plans to begin principal photography on the Star Trek sequel in January. The actor was being interviewed at the red carpet premiere of Paramount's Dinner For Schmucks when he shared the news.
"I just know that the plan is to film it in January, more than that, I don't know," he said.
Greenwood played the role of Captain -- and later Admiral -- Pike in 2009's Star Trek.
However, it is unknown whether his character will be returning for the sequel.
Director J.J. Abrams will once again be plotting the course for the Star Trek adventure, with most of the Enterprise's crew set to return, including Chris Pine (Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spock).
Details of the sequel's plot are, of course, being kept under tighter wraps than most matters of national security.
The untitled sequel will hit theaters on Jun. 29, 2012.

JamesG 05-26-2011, 02:06 AM "Star Trek" News: JJ Abrams 'Hopes to Direct' the Sequel
By Sharon Knolle
Posted May 25th 2011
Great news for Star Trek reboot fans:
J.J. Abrams is expected to return as director for the sequel.
The director tells Moviefone:
"We're working on the script and as soon as I'm done with 'Super 8,' that's the next thing we're focusing on. Hopefully we'll have a script soon and be able to get that movie going. I'm producing for sure and hope to direct, but that it all depends on the script."
According to Deadline, there's also some potential bad news:
Paramount may move Star Trek 2 back to a holiday 2012 release, instead of the announced date of June 29, 2012.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for Star Trek 2 in 2012.
In a recent interview while promoting Super 8 JJ Abrams said they're probaby not going to be able to deliver the Star Trek sequel by summer 2012..
We'll see what happens.
comedyfreak 06-17-2011, 05:47 AM :(
Sorry, In my above post I meant to say by the end of 2012instead of the summer of 2012.
But they're still not going to make it. They have less than a year and a half and they haven't even started filmng yet!
JamesG 07-28-2011, 03:35 PM J.J. Abrams Readies Another Trek
By Harley W. Lond

With Super 8 now under his belt, J.J. Abrams is moving forward (not quite at warp speed, but forward) on Star Trek 2, according to Deadline, but since the director is just now meeting with writers and prepping things, the studio has had to scuttle its hoped for June 29, 2012 release date.
Instead, it's slotted the Jon M. Chu-directed sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation into that date.
That means that Trek 2 most likely will hit screens late 2012 or summer 2013.

Yeah, as I suspected, we won't have a new Star Trek Movie until 2013.
Damn!

JamesG 09-14-2011, 02:41 AM J.J. Abrams Signs On to Direct Star Trek 2
Sep 13, 2011
by Adam B. Vary
J.J. Abrams is ready to engage.
EW has confirmed that the insatiable media multi-hyphenate has signed on to direct the sequel to his 2009 hit Star Trek.
(Vulture first reported the story.)
The first film’s screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are penning the screenplay with producer Damon Lindelof, and the main cast — including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are all set to return.
The untitled sequel was originally scheduled to come out June 2012, but the film has moved off of that date to give the writers enough time to polish the script.
Abrams’ first crack in the captain’s chair netted the reboot the highest-ever grosses for a Trek movie, pulling in $257 million domestically, and $385 million worldwide.

JamesG 11-23-2011, 08:09 PM Paramount's Star Trek Sequel to Open May 17, 2013
11/23/2011
by Jay A. Fernandez
Paramount has plotted a course for May 17, 2013, for its next Star Trek sequel, which it plans to shoot in 3D.
The release date slots the sci-fi franchise into a very busy tentpole-filled May 2013, coming right after Marvel/Disney's Iron Man 3 and Warner Bros.' Guillermo del Toro-directed Pacific Rim.
Earlier this year, director-producer J.J. Abrams, who directed the first Trek reboot, was tied up with Super 8 and hadn't committed to directing the new episode, forcing the studio to abandon its original date of June 29, 2012.
But the studio's announcement of a new release date for Summer 2013 indicates that Abrams is happy with the status of the script from Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof.
The 2009 Star Trek movie grossed $386 million worldwide.
Paramount, looking to the way Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. relaunched the Batman franchise with Batman Begins, is hoping the newly refurbished Starship Enterprise will reach even greater heights with this second installment.
