View Full Version : Would anybody happen to...
PolarCub75@aol.com 03-30-2009, 10:22 PM Does anybody remember when TV Land dedicated the Mary Tyler Moore statue in Minneapolis? Was anybody there? I wasn't there personally, but read that TV land had given out a rendition of the tam hat that Mary tosses in the opening credits of the show. I heard that once Mary took the stage, Sonny Curtis played a live version of the theme song & at the end, Mary & all of the attendees tossed their hats in the air.
Okay, here's my question. I know that there were two types of hats given out. There was a blue one & a black one. Does anybody know who or where I can obtain a blue version of the hat? I heard that they were available on ebay shortly after the ceremony. I've been looking since then, with no such luck. Did anybody attend the event or know somebody that attended & has an extra blue one that they wouldn't mind parting with? If anybody does, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thank you
PGood97041 03-31-2009, 03:26 AM can't help you on your specific question, polar cub, but hopefully somebody can
but it did raise a question...does anybody know what happened to the original hat? did mary keep it? is it in the smithsonian? or, not knowing how iconic the hat toss would be, has it been lost forever?
p.s. i'm still amazed at how mary got the hat to "frisbee" so perfectly! just another wondrous thing about TMTMS!
GrandGame1440 03-31-2009, 09:37 AM The hat was stolen from her attic years ago, she told Letterman in 2002.
PolarCub75@aol.com 03-31-2009, 01:01 PM Thanks anyway, PGood! :)
From what I remember, Mary's aunt either made and/or gave her the hat. And, yes, it was indeed stolen. :(
Kristen 03-31-2009, 09:30 PM I was pretty sure the hat was stolen, but I couldn't remember where I heard that. Glad I wasn't making it up. LOL.
PGood97041 04-01-2009, 02:27 AM that's a shame
i wonder if the person who clipped it even knew of the hat's historical significance...because if mary said in 2002 that it had been stolen years ago, that was WAY before ebay!
and even if somebody tried to sell it on ebay nowadays, he or she probably could be tracked down
if by chance the person who has the hat visits this board, i call on you now to listen to your conscience, do the right thing, and get it safely back to MTM!!!!
p.s. i'm fully aware of the needle-in-a-haystack nature of that plea, but it's late, i had a challenging night at work, and i'm loopy!
GrandGame1440 04-01-2009, 07:56 AM Well she still had it in 1991 when they did the 20th anniversary special. So it had to have happened between 1991 and 2002, although she said it was years ago on that date.
PolarCub75@aol.com 04-02-2009, 12:35 AM Justin,
Just out of curiosity, how do you know she had it in 1991, when they did the 20th Anniversary Show?
Kristen 04-02-2009, 01:12 AM Because Mary showed it at the beginning of the reunion. And she said it was the same one, so I assume it really was.

GrandGame1440 04-02-2009, 01:39 AM That's right. :D
PolarCub75@aol.com 04-02-2009, 10:38 AM Oh, wow! No way! Really? Is it possible for somebody to post an image of this?
I also wonder if it was the hat she used on the 1991 television special, "Funny Women of Television." If my memory serves me correctly, she opened the show. The announcer said, "Ladies & gentlemen..Mary Tyler Moore." The orchestra started to play "Love is All Around," while Mary stood at the top of the stairs & tossed a hat into the air, and walked down to the podium. This was in 1991, so I am not sure if it was the actual screen used hat from the opening credits of the Mary Tyler Moore show. I mean, the 20th Anniversary Show was in 1991, after all. Pun intended. LOL :) ;)
