View Full Version : I Moved to Third Shift at Kroger!
Adamantium 03-30-2009, 04:57 PM After 8 years of working first shift as the bagger/cleaner at Kroger, last night was my very first night working third shift as the floor guy. Basically I just sweep and mop the floor all night. I'm supposed to push around a big scrubber, but it was broken, so I had to mop extra.
Anyways, I got home at 7am (which used to be the time I'd go to work), and was asleep by 9am. I woke up at 4pm and plan to stay up through work.
Third shift is nice because there's no bosses around, and you can drink a pop on the floor, while you're working. You can even eat while you're working, which I didn't do, but it's nice to know that I can. ;)
So, I'm all for the third shift hours.
PZelda 03-30-2009, 05:02 PM That basically describes a typical shift for me at work. Dayside team members can't have beverages on the floor, but us awesome nightside team members can. :D
Plus, there's a significant pay raise for working at night. Wheee.
Jude The Obscure 03-30-2009, 10:43 PM congrats......
I'm full time cashier with extra duties such as tending dairy, occasionally sundays filling meat and produce (no butcher or produce guy on Sundays).
But oh well, it's a living......."Life's not the French Riverera, believe me life is not a charity ball, it isn't all a great big bed of roses, it's not like showbiz....."

catlover79 03-30-2009, 11:54 PM Congrats, Adam! Jude - thanks to you, that song is going to be stuck in my head!!

Basically at Safeway, nobody gives a **** after 7 o 'clock pm. Working late is great. Unless some secret shoppers decided to come through randomly, then it could be the worst night of your life.
phoebe7165 03-31-2009, 12:13 AM Congrats to you, Adam!
I know going on 3rd shift takes some adjusting for some people. You just feel like you never get enough sleep. And if you're also going to school, too, that can get brutal!!
I'm surprised they don't have you stocking shelves, too. Whenever I go to Wally World late at night, that's all most of the workers are doing. I know you don't work there, but I'm thinking that most stores do that anyway.

What do you do for dinner when you have to work late?
Do you:
A. Eat before you go to work
B. Get a break to eat
C. Purchase stuff at Safeway to eat
D. Other
Janice 03-31-2009, 01:15 AM Congrats to you! I guess it will take some time to get used to those hours, but no bosses looking over your shoulder will be great.

Welcome to the Grave shift!! It has its pluses and negatives, especially when you don't get good sleep cause of noisy neighbors that like to blast music. I got a good nap before work tonight.
ponytail 03-31-2009, 06:30 AM I worked third shift for a couple of months at Target. I didn't like it becasue I had a hard time trying to sleep during the day. But no customers and it was pretty much stressless.
Dr. John Becker 03-31-2009, 08:16 AM Kroger is one of the few companies that has gained business right now. With the economy so bad, fewer people are eating out and they are buying more food to prepare at home. Pretty good job security.

This is a time when working in the grocery industry ROCKS! :D
MickeyMac 03-31-2009, 05:58 PM Before I was let go at my job I worked 3rd shift. It had its advantages but I didnt like working Sunday nights though.
Lodee 03-31-2009, 06:37 PM I worked 3rd shift for years at a store called Meijer. It worked fine until I had my son, then I pretty much hated it.

I love shopping at Meijer's!! We don't have them in FL, but whenever I'm in OH or IN(which is often), I'll stop in there, especially during the holidays because they have the best holiday decorations.

I'd like to see that, actually.

It depends on how long my shift is- if it's 6 or more hours, I get a lunch break, so I usually eat then. I buy food from safeway. Did you get the message I sent you?
Big C 04-01-2009, 04:05 PM Did you get the message I sent you?
Yep!
I'll respond later today.
Dusty's Fan 04-14-2009, 09:11 PM I've done a couple of long-term third shift stints in my past. One was for Meijer. That was hard work, and combined with the duties and my often-missed lunch or dinner (when I was trying to get as much sleep as possible at home), it was really good for losing weight. At age 29 I could get back into pants I wore in high school...!
The other 3rd was for Signature Inn. I remember being unusually tired one night, so I took a nap on a table in the laundry room. I was lucky I woke up before the 1st shift people were due in, or I would have been really embarrased if they found me sleeping in there...!
PunkyP0WER 04-14-2009, 09:28 PM i do 3rd shift and have done it for many a years at different jobs. i did it at walgreens and it was a snore. all you did was clean all night and straighten shelves and mop the floor, all the while soft rock would play (which i'm a fan of) but it was a continuous loop of the same 50 songs over and over.
it was like you had your own work soundtrack.
then i worked it at the hospital, which was a very physically demanding and stressful job. but your shift went by so fast because there was always something exciting going on.
and now i'm at the shelter, and though it can be eventful at time, its mostly boring and will be even moreso now that they are closing the shelter and we aren't accepting any new clients. i want to leave but am trying to stay until fall atleast when i go to emt school so i can use my time at night there to work on my schoolwork.
Third Shift isn't so bad, it's usually slower paced & there is less management around to hassle you. But getting enough sleep during the day can be rough.
