I agree. The move to California was the "Jump the Shark" moment for this series.

I think that the shark jumping may have occurred before the great California exodous. Season 5 was pretty uneven, story-wise and the writers were definiately desperate for ideas.

I know that most people didn't like the California years, but the girls couldn't have remained bottlecappers in Milwaukee forever.

The first part of the first year in California was interesting in a fish out of water way, but the writers blew through that material pretty quickly. I definiately think they should have pulled the plug when Cindy Williams walked; the show seemed very disjointed after that.

I agree with Shotzette that Season 6 is the best out of the Cali lot.

They didn't have to remain bottle cappers but could have stayed in Milwaukee and had other jobs. Plus the move to Californnia eliminated future possibilities of running into the Happy Days Crew-lol

They definetly screwed up big time after Cindy left.It made no sense whatsoever to have the kept the series going with just Laverne while the show remained under the title"Laverne & Shirley".Anyone could have seen the show's cancellation coming.What were the writers thinking?:confused:

My theory is that too many people behind the scenes still wanted paychecks. Even being connected with a crappy show--which is what L&S became after Cindy left--allows you a paycheck. And royalties. And syndication rights...

I agree that they should have cancelled the show after Cindy's departure, but more importantly, they should have given the fans a series finale that would have given us closure. Carmine going to New York just doesn't cut it.

It was still a very popular series despite having so many changes connected with the characters' move to California. I was still watching as an avid fan. People may tend to forget that in tandem with Happy Days, L & S I'm pretty sure was still drawing big numbers of viewers.

While it wasn't as good as the Milwaukee era, and it was like a different show somewhat, we still had the great physical comedy of Cindy and Penny. And there were some very funny scripts. It's a fan's right to dismiss the work, but personally I still find the CA episodes worthwhile -- especially since the entire cast from the Milwaukee era remained...! (Of course, that is until Cindy's departure later.)

The show definitely jumped the season it moved to California. They should have learned from their inspiration (Lucy and Ethel) and realized "I Love Lucy" jumped when she moved from New York City to rural Connecticut. Some things are just not meant to be.

I know that moving the show to CA arguably marks the beginning of the end... but why did they have to move it in the first place?

the "network" wanted them to make big changes because the ratings had levelled off.
