View Full Version : It's Official: TV Land Is Now Unwatchable
tennesseeguy 03-17-2009, 12:58 PM I've tried and tried...understanding the network needed to expand beyond 60s and 70s sitcoms. they need to get their audience younger. however, today im ready to proclaim the network unwatchable.
from a schedule where you never know what's on...to a schedule that even runs my favorite show andy griffith in the ground....to endless promos for silly shows (they could pay me money and i wouldnt watch high school reunion)....to overplayed movies....to a network that clearly panders in sweep months (why else would CSI be added on thursday -- a key rating day)
this network has lost its way...badly. i am a late 30s media professional myself -- so im in the demo and have some experience. you no longer know what this channel is about. that's bad news.
tanquant 03-17-2009, 01:10 PM :clap You are exactly right. I used to love TV Land but now the station is a joke. I can't find anything on anymore. On the Direct TV guide it says one show is coming on and High School Reunion comes on especially when Leave it to Beaver is supposed to be coming on. I also love Andy Griffith but the entire series is on dvd so why don't they show something that is not on dvd:crazy:
TripperFan 03-17-2009, 01:15 PM They lost me about 3 years ago and Nick lost me over 4 years ago. O.k., I'm of the older demo (48) but that's the age group it used to be geared towards. It's like they think we all died off ourselves a few years back and are just going for regular programming now.
Thank goodness the Canadian versions (TVLand and Deja Vu) are still more true to their beginnings, but even they're not what they used to be.
I'm surprised they have ANY viewers left at all really.
Classicshowsgurl15 03-17-2009, 02:06 PM I agree. I mean i'm a younger person (17), but I love the classic shows they used to show. That is how I saw them all. I like The Andy Griffith Show, but it is SO overplayed! I mean it's on dvd. Put shows that aren't on dvd on the station. It's just sad that classic shows are starting to be hard to find on tv anymore in reruns. Cause they are good, clean shows that are good for younger people to see and then they cater to them by showing all these reality shows.
sbeamish 03-17-2009, 02:47 PM I tell you, that's one thing I cannot understand.
I can actually see why they've turned their backs on those of us who love 50s,60s, and 70s television. The money is with the younger crowd. But this whole Andy Griffith thing.
I like the show too, though it's not one of my absolute favorites. But you wouldn't be able to blast it off TVLand primetime with a nuclear missile. Please, give SOME other show a chance: Lucy, Gilligan... anything. I don't think any old classic has had this kind of loving treatment from TVLand.
Is Barney Fife running the station?
MickeyMac 03-17-2009, 04:54 PM TVLand started to lose me when they added more and more shows from the 70's. For me they really went to sh*t when they added The Cosby Show, I still havent forgiven them for that one. Now they are beyond watchable.

I feel the same way too. There are several shows that are overplayed and are on DVD. There are several shows that haven't been played on TV Land in years.
DSfan 03-17-2009, 10:22 PM Thank goodness the Canadian versions (TVLand and Deja Vu) are still more true to their beginnings, but even they're not what they used to be.
Dejaview just added Wonder Years to their lineup weekdays at 12PM-1PM and 1AM-2AM (encore). I think Dejaview is much better than TV Land Canada (whose schedule is also a bit all over the place and airs stuff like Ready or Not and some bad Canadian shows). Whereas Dejaview airs great classic stuff now like Three's Company, Good Times, One Day at a Time, Wonder Years, Cosby Show, All in the Family, Who's the Boss?, Silver Spoons, etc.
benjamoon 03-17-2009, 11:15 PM What's sad is that new generations of kids will not get to know these classic shows that everyone else has. I'm only 22 but I was introduced to classics from the 50s, 60s, 70s by watching Nick at Nite and TV Land as a kid.
I'm not worried about the shows not being on anymore for me because most of them are available on DVD, at least partially but I am worried about future generations because they won't have any access to it and therefore won't be interested in buying DVDs/watching online. Fans of my generation and before pretty much "discovered" these shows on TV and sadly, that won't be happening as much in today's highly personalized world
catlover79 03-17-2009, 11:20 PM What a big disappointment (and sell-out) TV Land turned out to be. They deserve every bit of the venom they're getting.

Tubehead 03-18-2009, 01:07 AM I can't stand tv LAND . when they put on cobsyshow. i tryed watching it i don't like it much. i can't stand high school reuion. then they had Homemaker for a while now they keep adding more reality show. they even had she got the look. it was just stupid moldeing for older women. i think they should change their name to reality land. i don't care to much for the moives either . they show the same moives that been on other stations. now their coming out with another reaitly show called the cougar. it about older women dateing younger men. who in the world would watch this stuff? only two shows i watch is sanford and son andthe jerffersons. i also hated when they add scurbs and just shoot me. now their showing csi show. they come on other channels all day long. i want i love lucy back. i can't belive tv land got rid of the show. if they got ridof it they should repleace it with the lucy show OR THE hooneymooner or some older classic show. i just watch my dvd. i got the i love lucy season one and two on dvd. i'm gaving up on tv land.

That's how I got into the classics too; I was babysitting when I was around 14 and we watched Nick at Nite. I like more classics than I do current shows.
comedyfreak 03-18-2009, 05:26 AM I stopped watching tvland a couple of years ago.

I remember those days...
In the 1990s one of my favorite nights of television was on Saturday night. This is when they had the SNICK line-up from 8-10pm. After that they had I Love Lucy at 10pm, The Lucy Show at 10:30pm, and Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour from 11-midnight. Whole family used to watch it every night for as long as this line-up lasted.
I also remember Nick-at-Nite had a good run of shows in the 90s. I don't remember exactly what order they ran in but they had The Munsters, I Love Lucy, Happy Days, Bewitched, and I Dream of Jeannie. I remember that other shows like Mary Tyler Moore and Taxi aired later in the evening, past 10 and 11pm.
This was when we first got cable so I remember these programs from when I used to watch it. Over time they gradually changed the line up introducing Diff'rent Strokes, Facts of Life, and The Brady Bunch.

Same with me. I was introduced to a lot of the classic shows from TVLand and Nick at Nite back in the 90s and early 2000's. I feel bad for the new generations too because they are such good shows and they won't be introduced to them because TVLand is becoming like any other network that is filled with reality shows. Hopefully if their parents get them on dvd, they will see them.
megamanj2004 03-19-2009, 03:58 PM I'm currently in early-to-mid '20s and I too grew up on classic shows on TV Land and N@N to some degrees.
I also have a 2-year old nephew that's into game shows like myself and I just find it atrocious as to how media corporations like Viacom (who runs TV Land) are thinking Reality Shows are "Must-See TV" and shoving those insipid, horrific, crappy, pathetic, teeny-bopper shows like "Sweet 16" and "Yo Mama!" on MTV and/or VH1, knowing that the majority of those shows seem to be mostly about "how to act like an total rude-@$* on camera" or "how to act materialistic" in public.
And b/c of shows like that, not only will future generations of children never knew who or what shows such as "Andy Griffith," "I Love Lucy," "All in the Family" and countless others from year's past were, but eventually most of the future will end up becoming that way if it comes down to it by the media.
rodwayne 03-20-2009, 04:27 PM This netwook were added to my cable line-up right at the time when it "Jump the shark",and the shows were beginning to get bad. Then it seems to go from bad to worst overnight.I want to know what brainless twit thought that we wanted a channel with nothing but reality trash on it?!?Or shows with wash up has been stars(Remember CHASING FARRAH anyone?!?).I said this on so many of my replies and I will say it again:LEAVE OUR :cuss: CLASSICS ALONE!!!We don't want these "fly-by-night" shows, nor do we care for them.At least create a classic T.V. Land channel for us,then they can :cuss: up this channel all they want!
Tubehead 03-21-2009, 11:04 PM I think tv land should change their name,
here few suggestions:
Reality land
Junk land
Moive land
stupid land
waste land
browneyes106 03-22-2009, 04:27 PM I agree with a lot of you about the future generations not being introduced to older and great tv shows. It is sad some of the tv legends of the past paved the way for a lot of great actors, writers and producers.

I know I usually say TV Land went downhill in 2004, but I will say the summer of 2006 after they Picked up Benson and then got rid of it so quickly. I can see this network not being watchable at all in 2012

We're already there dude. TVLand is beyond unwatchable.
TVFactFan 03-22-2009, 06:38 PM We're already there dude. TVLand is beyond unwatchable.
Well not yet because they still do give you classic tv just in smaller doses in the morning or late at night. It won't be totally unwatchable until there are ONLY ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING on the schedule
dawsongirl 03-22-2009, 09:31 PM waste land
That's it.
Jude The Obscure 03-22-2009, 09:32 PM I hate how they just now skip the closing credits on some shows altogether--not even scrunched retyped credits in a black box...just go from the closing scene directly to the opening credits of the next episode.
Next.....TV Land redoes the opening credits of shows, which will be the ultimate blasphemy in TV!!

Yeah that must be something NEW, I noticed that is a new TV Land style of Redoing the closing credts. You don't even see the closing credits anymore-lol

From the TV Land Rep
"TV land is now a combination of Classic TV, Newer Vintage Shows, Originals, and Movies. The Network was in a position where it could no longer continue depending on entirely classic Television. The new Format has allowed the network to retain classic Television as a significant portionof it's programming while engaging in a business model that increases viewership as a whole"
LOL

C'mon, Monika, these people have already thought this out and it is just a matter of time before they imitate TBS in shortening theme songs ala Fresh Prince and SBTB.

I thought it was creative by TBS, and wish N@N can pick up on it-lol Some theme songs need a remix like the Jeffersons, Good Times, and Family Matters

Jack1000 03-23-2009, 12:18 AM I remember petitioning Time Warner Cable for TV Land back around the year 1998 when it still was classic TV. You'd never believe it now, but when TV Land first launched in 1996, they showed UNCUT classic TV Shows with old vintage commercials called, "Retromercials." It was one of the most requested TV stations ever!
Than in 1997, they went to edited shows, but still kept the "Retromercials." I think we got the station in 2001 and it was still very good. But for the past five years, stupid reality TV, overplayed edited movies, even MORE severely edited shows, and a diminishing of the classics that once made TV Land great, have become the norm. I hate the split-screen end credits as well and General Manager Larry Jones could care less.
Fortunately there are stations that still do a good job at showing classic TV shows and movies. ME-TV is great and I have heard, so is its sister station, ME-TOO. If you live in Chicago or Milwaukee, you can see ME-TV. I wonder how many other states have this channel? In other areas, there is also Retro Television network or RTN, which are prime examples of what TV Land USED to be!
For a great variety of classic movies and some good vintage TV shows, THIS TV Network is really good. They are showing 85% movies, but the variety is amazing! TV Land may have forgotten about the classics, but other stations are doing the smart thing by embracing them!

TV land rep said the ratings for High School Reunion are High. Have to say I'm shocked
Jude The Obscure 03-23-2009, 11:20 AM It's called programming to the lowest common denominator......ever since Survivor, we've been baraged with one variation after another of it or Big Brother. "tonight, John confesses a dark secret to Mary. Will Mary bolt the house? The gang suspects Tom hasn't been honest with them about his past. will they vote him out? And which roommate was caught sneaking into another roomate's room at 2am? This and more on the next installment of Lame Reality TV House 25!"
icecream 03-23-2009, 11:33 AM what do you mean? They replaced the nice hearts with a TV that said TVLand presents and had the stars' names on that instead.
Jude The Obscure 03-23-2009, 11:49 AM That was representations of the original opening credits, which I didn't mind. The hearts on satin was never the original opening anyway--it was made for syndication.
I'm talking about TV Land just actually redoing credits with a simple title page--"and now on TV Land, The Jeffersons with Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford" and then they fade in to the opening scene of the episode. Watch, people, it's gonna happen.
robyrob 03-23-2009, 01:13 PM TV land rep said the ratings for High School Reunion are High. Have to say I'm shockedthey probably add up all the cumulative airings they have for the entire week and compare it to that infomercial they run it against at 3am on Monday mornings
they just need to get crap like that off the air period.

Comcast on Demand
DVD's
They will always be two ways that Classic TV will be available to US
MickeyMac 03-23-2009, 03:25 PM I got a name TVLand should call themselves but I cant say here.
Since I dont have cable I dont watch it, but I know I am not missing anything.
TVLand has to be the biggest let down since oldies radio abandoned their format.
sad sad sad.
