View Full Version : Here are the List of "Spinoff Step Childs" of Sitcom History
TVFactFan 03-07-2009, 02:56 PM The spinoff step child of All in the Family-"Checking In"
The spinoff step child of Happy Days is Mork and Mindy
The spinoff step child of Mary Tyler Moore is Phyllis
The spinoff step of Married With Children is Vinne and Bobby
These are distance spinoffs that never really got a lot of exposure in syndication or not a direct connection top the parent show.
Chrisothebigc 03-07-2009, 08:12 PM Hey man,
"Phyllis" really can't be considered a step-child of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". True, it didn't get a lot of exposure in syndication, as it only ran for two years. Still it did run eleven times a week on Nick, and also aired on TVLand. The charcter of Phyllis appeared on the MTMS for five years, appeared in the final episode, and Mary Richards guested on "Phyllis" twice: once each season. "Phyllis" even topped MTMS and "Rhoda" in the ratings in it's first year.
Maybe the 1970's "The Betty White Show" could be considered a step-child of MTMS. It is often listed as a spin-off, even though Betty White and Georgia Engel played different roles.
Waddaya think?

But Rhoda was the Stronger and more connected of the 2 to Mary than Phyllisd that's why I consider it the Step child.
Chrisothebigc 03-11-2009, 04:52 PM Hmmm. Well, that's an opinion, anyway. Your other choices make sense to me, based on the terms you listed.

I wouldn't consider "Phyllis" a stepchild of MTM, either, for the same reasons you cite. I also would consider "Checking-In" a grandchild, or second-generation spin-off of "All In the Family," not a step-child. "Checking In" was a direct spin-off of "The Jeffersons," with Marla Gibbs playing, Florence, the character she had made popular on "The Jeffersons." And "The Jeffersons," in turn, was a direct spin-off of "All In the Family."

I agree with you, Checking In would be considered a Grand child not a Step Child
