View Full Version : Renting from Blanche
sodalake 03-06-2009, 05:18 AM One thing I found puzzling with the show (although it made for storylines) was how Blanche owned the house and the others paid rent to her for living there.
However, there's an episode where Dorothy and Rose are trying to fix the bathroom themselves to avoid paying for a plumber. Another one has the girls trying to buy a dying artist's painting to raise money for a new roof.
Since it was Blanche's house, she should have been paying for this stuff herself. I always thought it was kinda funny how the girls acted poor and short on money yet they seemed to live in a really nice house and dressed well.
FOLrocks1 03-06-2009, 10:27 AM You're right, if the girls were paying rent, any repairs would have been up to Blanche. But like you said, it just made for better episodes.
sodalake 03-06-2009, 11:20 AM One thing that also changed in the house from time to time is their bathrooms. When Dorothy and Rose were working on the main bathroom, Dorothy tells Sophia to use Blanche's and Sophia states she hates that bathroom because it feels like a jungle or something.
However, at different times during the series, it is shown that each of the girls has their own bathroom off their bedroom plus the one in the hall which seemed to be to the immediate right before Sophia's bedroom door.
FOLrocks1 03-06-2009, 01:51 PM There we so many inconsistancies in that house. Blanche's bedroom and the lanei changed from the pilot episode. The girls enter from both the back door and the front after they park in the driveway, which doesn't make much sense.
The area to the backdoor in some episodes led to a garage. Which makes no sense at all. Most of the time it seemed to lead into the hallway that led to their rooms. So how could that big garage fit there? It can't lol. It would be running right into Sophia's bedroom.
Also, the outside doesn't really seem to match with the inside, but that's always been a common discussion with the show.
sodalake 03-07-2009, 01:22 AM I was also thinking today how Rose's bedroom door is the only door on to the left down the hallway. If you recall the episode where it shows how they met and moved in together, Dorothy thinks her room is the SECOND on the left and Rose says no Blanche promised that room to me and then they flip for it.
Yeah it really doesn't make sense how the garage was off the kitchen when that would lead back to their bedrooms. I used to try to piece together how the house was inside vs. the outside that they showed...it never went together!
How was it I wonder that shows in the 60s like Bewitched for one seemed to show the entire house from all angles inside--you saw every wall of their house and it matched up to the outside. It didn't seem like the set was viewed from a stage where you didnt see one wall--that was facing the audience.
OOliver 03-09-2009, 10:13 PM BEWITCHED had it's set descrepancies as well, especially in the last two seasons. For example, the whole kitchen remodel didn't make sense - starting with the kitchen staircase (which was once a closet) that appeared and went to 'nowhere' upstairs!

The studio had a fire and they had to make new sets during the last two seasons and I didn't care for them. As you mentioned, they made no sense.

I agree it was probably for better episodes. Wasn't there an episode where Blanche put the other girls on a deed?
FOLrocks1 03-19-2009, 09:23 PM Yeah she was going to be fined for having of the limit of renters, so she added them as co-owners.

I always thought that storyline was kind of dumb. Blanche could have gotten around it by just charging a double rent rate to Dorothy to make up for Sophia or something instead of them acting like one of them had to pack up and move out...I guess it was a way for them to finally have all the girls co-owning the house.
