I'm contemplating creating some sort of blog that documents the worst ideas ever in the history of sportscasting (television and radio, local and national). When I talk about bad I ideas, it could either involve a choice of announcers, production (i.e. music, graphics, the overall presentation, etc.), or the promotion by the network itself. I was inspired by a place called WrestleCrap (http://www.wrestlecrap.com), which documents the worst that professional wrestling has had to offer

A couple of obvious ones to get started:


The Heidi Bowl - 1968 - NBC was televising a late Sunday afternoon Jets/Raiders game. The Jets led the Raiders 32-29 with 1:05 left in the game. It was approaching 7:00 p.m. EST, and NBC decided to pull away from coverage of the game in order to start the telecast of the movie "Heidi" on time. After cutting off the broadcast of the game, the Raiders ended up scoring two TDs in the final minute to win the game 43-32.

Fans, of course, were outraged. I doubt that any football game was ever cut away from again in order to start a scheduled 7:00 pm movie broadcast.


The Olympics Triplecast (1992) - oh, brother.

Mike Tirico and/or Mike Breen calling an NBA game. I can't stand either one of them. I enjoy Bill Walton, Marv Albert, and Kevin Harlan. Reggie Miller is also another one I can't stand.

I'd like to nominate Fox TV's idea of a glowing puck on hockey broadcasts.
