Fox has given a two-season pickup to its toon stalwart "The Simpsons."
Deal will take the animated family comedy into its 22nd season, making it TV's longest-running primetime entertainment skein.

The 44-seg renewal of the 20th Century Fox TV toon will boost the show's total episode tally to a whopping 493.

Fox last month kicked off a yearlong "Simpsons" celebration dubbed "Best. 20 Years. Ever" to culminate on the 20th anniversary of the show's bow on Jan. 14, 1990.

There was only a 36 minute difference in the time it was posted on the blog and when I started the thread. I saw no harm in starting the topic in this forum because I seriously doubt that every member here reads the blog. From now on I'll be sure to check the blog and if I have anything to post I'll include a link to it.

We don't mind outside links, but if there is a story already from SitcomsOnline, we prefer that link instead. We like to keep it in the family. That's all. You did nothing wrong.

Why not go for 601 episodes and beat Gunsmoke?

It could. It doesn't mean it will end after 493. This announcement was just a renewal for 2 more years. I personally think it won't go much longer than these two years.

I think Gunsmoke has 635 episodes.

You beat me to posting it. I was about to post it right when i read it off of TV.com. CONGRAGULATIONS!!!

Gunsmoke has a total of 625 episodes. In order for the simpsons to beat that, they would have to have 2 more seasons of 22 episodes. Even when that is done, they would have more than gunsmoke. This show can beat gunsmoke, this can beat 625 episodes, this in fact could be on for another 10 years untill one of the main voice actors dies. My bet is 65 year old Harry Shearer will kick the bucket first!

This isn't a race to see who can post first and besides, Pavan had it on the blog before I started this thread.

Go Simpsons! This is one of the few shows I enjoy and I have since I was a kid.

I was just thinking though, when comparing it's run to Gunsmoke for longest lasting primetime show why compare episodes amounts? Remember Gunsmoke was on when show typically ran for 30 to 40 episodes a season. For a correct show to match that they would have to be last ten more years then Gunsmoke. Time wise the Simpsons have nearly beat Gunsmoke already. They just have to finish this year and next year, then they lasted longer. The two additional years will just add up the episodes to 493.
