How do you heal a fanboy's broken heart? Lesbians. Or at least that what's DC Comics is hoping.

After ejecting Batman from a plane to his certain death two months ago, DC has announced that they are replacing him with Batwoman, a red-headed, stiletto-wearing "lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night." Batwoman — and her alter ego Kathy Kane — will be the subject of at least 12 issues of Detective Conics beginning in June, marking the first major storyline for a gay character in DC's history.

The character was first introduced in 1956, but her modern "outed" incarnation is only a couple years old. Writer Greg Rucka insists her sexuality is incidental to the character. "Yes, she's a lesbian. She's also a redhead. It is an element of her character. It is not her character. If people are going to have problems with it, that's their issue," he told the U.K.'s Independent newspaper.

Rucka also noted that future editions of the comic may focus on Catwoman and Damien, Batman's purported son — that is, until they decide that it's just best to bring Batman back to life.

Batman is DEAD?? How did I miss that? When Superman and Captain
America died, their deaths were plastered all over the front page of every
newspaper (must have been slow news days).

Marvel Comics began some of this by establishing that one of their "Alpha Flight" Canadian characters (Northstar I think) is gay. They also took one of their old westerns, "The Rawhide Kid," and did some sort of double-entendre homosexuality stuff in a new miniseries a couple of years ago

Some of the current writers for DC Comics are total idiots. Writer Andy Diggle once argued that older TV was worse than modern, and he used "The Honeymooners" as an example of something he thought was bad (!). This same guy likes to overflow some of his tales with four-letter words (some of the comics are for "mature readers") under the guise of realism. A major DC storyline of recent years involved turning the wife of "The Atom" into a murderer, if I'm not mistaken. Lots of fans are fed up.

P.S.: Bat-Mite did return around 1979 in "Bat-Mite's New York Adventure" in Detective Comics.

DC made it a point not to "kill" Bruce Wayne since they knew it never was gonna stick and they'll do a whole extravaganza when they bring him back. Agreed that the writers are morons. I laugh when these guys say they grew up as fans and then they pull this stuff which would make the real fans want to lynch them.
