I think that Peter was simply trying to make the point that two wrongs never made a right. He did not want to be thought of as simply one more chicken in the barn who had fallen victim to the pecking order!

Peter always was a little different. He was in the glee club! And he liked to use his tape recorder to spy on people!

In the first place, I do not think that there is anything especially unuasual about a boy being in glee club. Especially in a time period as liberal as the early seventies. We were at the tail-end of the hippie generation! My sister was in glee club in fourth grade. She said that there were a lot of guys in the group. This was in 1981. Furthermore, over on the "Gimme a Break!" page of this site, I recently started a thread called "Buddy Hinton". This was to tell my buddies there about our action here and to compare what went on in this episode with something that went on in a third-season episode of that sereis. In that episode, three female character acted as if two wrongs did make a right! I would be very interested in what you guys think of it!

The "Gimme a Break!" episode that I compared this episodes to is called "Samantha's Protest". In this episode, the girl whose bubble was bursted was nineteen years old and the people who had fun at her expence were a fifteen year old girl, a seventeen year old girl and a woman who was probably somewhere in her thirties. If you have never seen that episode before and you like the poetic justice of this episode, you might want to give it a try! Just go over to "Youtube" and punch in "Samantha's Protest". The episode in its entirety is broken down into three parts. Have fun!

Agree with the OP on Peter's behavior in "A Fistful of Reasons." I love the episode, but hated the idea of Peter telling the kids not to laugh at Buddy after Peter punched his tooth loose Why was he nice to him, after being bullied by him? The scene should have ended with Buddy saying his tooth got loose, the kids laughing at Buddy. Buddy runs away, and Peter says, to Cindy, "Come on, let's go home."

The tag is also bad. A true bully would never ever go back to a kid's house after being humiliated like that. I love the episode other than those two instances, but a better tag could have been written here.

I HATE The Private Ear episode. That's the one where Peter tape-records his siblings conversations. He apologizes as his punishment. Greg and Marcia think an apology is two lenient so they plan a bogus taped message about Peter getting a surprise party for getting an A in Geometry. Eventually, both Greg and Marcia confess to the joke, and Peter even understands why they did it.

So WHY do Mike and Carol and the rest of the family give him a party anyway? And REWARD him with (of all things) A NEW TAPE RECORDER? Oh gee, too bad, how sad, Poor little Peter Weater got his feelings hurt! He's rewarded with a tape recorder for eavesdropping. Greg and Marcia were just getting their revenge for Peter listening in on other people's conversations.

If anyone can defend why Peter deserved a surprise party, I would love to hear why? Mike and Carol were wrong to interfere here with the party. Peter learned his lesson with Greg and Marcia's "revenge message" on him. Maybe they needed five minutes of time to kill. The way I read the final moral of The Private Ear is, it's OK to have a big celebration, if you get your feelings hurt.

I can understand the family throwing a party for Peter in The Hero," where his friends got tired of his story of saving Tina in the toy-store. He WAS legitimately hurt by none of his friends showing up for his party, and besides the family didn't want all the food and drinks to go to waste. So that's fine. I think The Hero is a good episode.

But in contrast, a party for Peter in the content of The Private Ear's lesson supposed to be learned that it's not cool to eavesdrop with a new tape recorder as a reward, does not seem kosher to me.

I agree about the Private Ear episode. They should never have rewarded Peter for bad behavior. That sends exactly the wrong message.

One thing that I was really hoping to do was stimulate some conversation about the similarities between this episode and the "Gimme a Break!" episode called "Samantha's Protest". I would say that, the generation of children who grew up with the reruns of this series were very much the same generation of people who watched shows like "Gimme a Break!" as teenagers. Another show that I would put in that catogory is "Facts of Life" and that show's page is flooded with posts! Go figure! In any event, one significant difference here is that, in this episode, the backfireing of over confidence was the primary plot. On "Gimme a Break!" it was the secondary plot used for comic releaf. In any case, like I stated a few posts ago, I started a thread on that page called "Buddy Hinton". The last time I checked, it had fourteen views and zero responses. I have since started a thread called "Follow-Up". This was to tell people a little bit more about the parrelells in situations. This had six views and zero responses. In about an hour, I plan on going back to that page and seeing if things have changed!
