The Absolute Worst Number 1 Hits Of The 1980s
People who came of age in the 1980s tend to grumble a lot about the current state of popular music. And while I tend to agree that the top 40 charts today are dreadful, let's face it, they weren't much better in the 80s.
The bottom line is every decade has produced masterful works of songcraft that will stand the test of time, but each decade has also produced a myriad of schlock.
Unfortunately, the best-produced and marketed schlock tends to rise above the good stuff.
For this playlist I looked at all the songs that hit the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the 1980s. Then I picked a single song from each year of the decade. I made my decision on each song by selecting only those tracks that produced the most defined gag reflex.
I would highly recommend not eating directly before giving this playlist a spin and ensuring an unobstructed line to the bathroom.
The Absolute Worst Number 1 Hits Of The 1980s

I admit I do, too!!
I never really liked Flashdance or At this Moment, though.

That song is better than the one they had for Ghostbusters 2!! I think it was called "On Our Own" and Bobby Brown sang it. Hated it!!

Now THAT one I didn't care for.
MonarC 02-07-2009, 06:38 PM Sorry didn't mean to offend the Ghostbuster lovers.

No offense taken here!! :D
MonarC 02-07-2009, 06:45 PM Awww thanks salt sista. :D
Marvo301 02-07-2009, 06:57 PM I loved the way "At This Moment" was used on "Family Ties". It was the episode where Ellen decided to leave Alex and move to Paris to pursue dance.

Didn't they also play that the first time Alex and Ellen danced/kissed?
Marvo301 02-07-2009, 07:08 PM I don't remember. But if that is true, then it would give the song a whole other layer of meaning when they played it on Ellen's last episode.
Another blogger putting the hatred on Jefferson Starship.
Let it go!
While most of those songs will not make one of my iPod playlists, they're not that bad.
Okay, the Milli Vanilli song is bad.
;)

All of those songs are on my iPod (:o) - except the Milli Vanilli one.
Cactus Jack 02-07-2009, 07:13 PM Except for a couple, the list is spot on, and I think All Out of Love is pretty bad too. AW **** BEFORE I TYPEDT HAT IT GOT IN MY HEAD!
'They firgot the Seasons in the Sun of the 80s...Cant Fight This Feeling
I CANT FIGHT THIS FEELING ANYMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE.IVE FORGOTTEN WHAT ISTARTED FIGHTING FOOOOOOOOOR/ITS TIME TO BRING THIS SH*T RIGHT HERE THAT SOARS/DON'T EVER SING AGAIN ABOUT OARS/ DONT EVERRRRRRRRRRR
Nighthawk76 02-08-2009, 12:23 AM Many of these songs are ones that I really like. "Flashdance" is my second all the favorite song. "Truly" is a good song. "The Next Time I Fall" is from Peter Cetera's first and best solo album. Even though I hate Poison, I do like "Every Rose Has It's Thorn". "Let's Hear It For the Boy" isn't a bad song either.
catlover79 02-08-2009, 01:42 AM Personally, I think Madonna's "Who's That Girl" was and is worse than any of the selections here. It's one of the few songs from the 80s that I absolutely cannot stand. puke:
Zoneboy 02-08-2009, 02:00 AM Going with the same format as the person who wrote the blog, My list looks like this:
1980 - "Upside Down" - Diana Ross
1981 - "Physical" - Olivia Newton-John
1982 - "Ebony and Ivory" - Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder
1983 - "Islands in the Stream" - Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton
1984 - "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" - Wham
1985 - "Sussudio" - Phil Collins
1986 - "Stuck with You" - Huey Lewis and the News
1987 - "Walk Like an Egyptian" - The Bangles
1988 - "Don't Worry Be Happy" - Bobby McFerrin
1989 - "Rock On" - Michael Damian
catlover79 02-08-2009, 02:02 AM ^ I actually think those songs were more overplayed than bad altogether. I happen to like most of them, especially "Islands in the Stream".

Commercial radio does have a habit of overplaying some songs and making us sick of them!

puke: Don't know the 1989 one.
platinumblondelife 02-08-2009, 06:04 AM awww, I like Flashdance. lol
James 02-08-2009, 03:06 PM My worst would have to be Club Nouveau's rendition of Bill Withers' "Lean On Me" from 1987. No wonder they had no hits after that! puke: (Edit: They did have another that year that barely registered on Casey Kasem's AT40 charts at #39, and I have yet to hear it.)
Oh, and just for the record, I kind of like "At This Moment." DYK it first came out in 1981 (peaking at #79) but didn't enter the AT40 charts until five years later? Back in 1986 I thought 1981 music was so nostalgic, so that got me to like it, much to the disappointment of my friends, who couldn't stand it. In fact, it was used as the theme song to the ninth grade prom at my junior high school in 1987 (didn't go, by the way, but helped set up with members of the National Junior Honor Society).
catlover79 02-08-2009, 03:11 PM awww, I like Flashdance. lol
So do I.
ABlairican Pie 02-08-2009, 03:28 PM But I LIKE "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison.
MickeyMac 02-08-2009, 05:55 PM 1. Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes (1980)
2. The One That You Love - Air Supply (1981)

8. At This Moment - Billy Vera (1987)
9. Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison (1988)
10. Milli Vanilli - Girl I'm Gonna Miss You (1989)
With the exception of "At This Moment" none of these songs I care for.
TripperFan 02-08-2009, 06:14 PM Didn't they also play that the first time Alex and Ellen danced/kissed?
Good memory! Yes they did - so it was like it was Alex's and Ellen's song. Hell - I even cried when she went off to become a ballerina (that's the reason she was leaving supposedly).
And I like all the songs too. I don't know who comes up with all these lists, but let's face it, it's just that one person's opinion.
catlover79 02-08-2009, 06:57 PM ^ Thanks, Cathie...I thought that was the case. Anyway, good for the makers of the DVD for scraping up the $$$ to use the song, If they hadn't - there would've been a LOT of angry fans!!
Cactus Jack 02-08-2009, 07:51 PM lOL people being angry cause a crappy song wasnt used. I admit things Im fans of that use certain songs I dont like, doesnt make me like the song.
rEO Speedwagon shoulda made this list. No they should BE the list.
TripperFan 02-08-2009, 08:44 PM rEO Speedwagon shoulda made this list. No they should BE the list.
 Ahhh - be nice! I saw them about 10 years ago (along on the same ticket as Foreigner and Peter Frampton) and they were good. I enjoyed a couple of their songs.
Funny - I must be the ONLY person in the world, that never got into U2 - then or now. I just don't see what's so great in them. * ducks from everyone freaking out on me * ;)
catlover79 02-08-2009, 08:47 PM ^ Cathie, you're not alone. I don't know what the big deal is about U2's music, either. *Monika and Cathie duck from tomatoes*

 oh thank goodness for that! I like what Bono does with his celebrity (sometimes - other times it's like he might as well go into politics his ego is so big) but their songs depress me!
(and on a side note, I like Enya too, but hated it when they'd play her songs on the radion while I was driving to work in the morning - they're great for putting me to sleep!)
dawsongirl 02-08-2009, 10:49 PM My picks for worst #1s...
1980 - wow...too many choices...but I'm going with: June 22 – July 12 1980 Paul McCartney - Coming Up (Live at Glasgow)
1981 - easy: November 15 1981 – January 23 1982 Olivia Newton-John - Physical
1982 - October 31 – November 20 1982 Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes - Up Where We Belong (and the remaining weeks for Physical)
1983 - Can't choose one. I like them all.
1984 - December 16 1984 – January 26 1985 Madonna - Like a Virgin
1985 - October 6 – 12 1985 Ready For The World - Oh Sheila
1986 - April 13 – 26 1986 Prince - Kiss
1987 - July 5 – 25 1987 Heart - Alone (though there were other bad ones as well)
1988 - September 4 – 17 1988 Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child o' Mine (hate Poison's song too, but this one is worse)
1989 - Boy...there are a lot of songs I've never even heard of...anyway: January 8 – 14 1989 Bobby Brown - My Perogative
88survivor 02-08-2009, 11:23 PM Introducing the Italian J-Lo/Britney Spears of the 80s, Pia Zadora. Like J-Lo did a duet with LL Cool J, Pia did one with Jermaine Jackson with When The Rain Begins To Fall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AY8B_NsnkY&feature=related). This has to be the worst song ever written. Bar none.
And if this song doesn't make you puke, I don't know what.
Charlene- I've Never Been To Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-vx4GcjASE)

Someone besides me knows this piece of dreck. However, This song by Pia is far worse... Rock it Out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ek-EWNSdkM8)
Pia should've never attempted a career as a rock singer but her renditions of the standards is beautiful. The Platinum Collection (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IP2do1h8qog)
And for the record, Pia isn't Italian, She was born in Hoboken , NJ

It was because of Pia that the Best Newcomer Award was eliminated from the Golden Globes (her then-husband was accused of buying it for her).

I do like "With or Without You" - everything else by U2 I can take or leave.
Skywalker 02-09-2009, 12:40 AM 1980: "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" - Rupert Holmes
1981: "Physical" - Olivia Newton-John
1982: "Ebony and Ivory" - Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder
1983: "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" - Eurythmics
1984: "Karma Chameleon" - Culture Club
1985: "Oh Sheila" - Ready for the World
1986: "West End Girls" - Pet Shop Boys
1987: "Faith" - George Michael
1988: "Kokomo" - The Beach Boys
1989: "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)" - New Kids on the Block
88survivor 02-09-2009, 10:21 AM I know Pia is not Italian and a Hoboken native, but she was like definitely back then like the J-Lo/Britney Spears of our times. I remember how many people laughed at her so-called singing and just brushed it off as another short stacked chick trying to get her touch of fame as a singer one more time. Even E. G Daily had a better personality, even if E.G was not much of a singer to begin with. No wonder she did the voice of Tom Pickles in the Rugrats.
Zoneboy 02-09-2009, 10:38 AM I know Pia is not Italian.
Sorry about that, From the way I read your post it sounded as if you were saying she was Italian.
88survivor 02-09-2009, 11:05 AM That's okay. You all said Olivia Newton-John's Physical. Well, there was a much worse song than Physical. Somewhere in 1982, there was a Holland chick named Vanessa that tried to cash in on the Olivia Newton-John fitness craze. It turned out the English was sub-par in that eerily disgusting disco-sounding song called "Upside Down"...Not to be confused with Diana Ross(even though that song deserves some nodding heads), it was one of the first waves of 80s pop singers from Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Austria, etc. that tried to sound English for once. Usually, it falls flat. I prefer the singer to sing in their native language when it was originally sung and not to attempt English on a foreign tune that was originally in the European languages. But here it is. Holland's own Paris Hilton mixed with Mash' Hot Lips of the 80s and a travesty of a song: Upside Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zmQR45bkBs)

Yikes! a music video I've never seen and I now regret that I clicked the link. That was definitely worse than "Physical" puke:
88survivor 02-09-2009, 03:50 PM You forgotten some of these songs from the 80s...
Phil Collins- Another Day In Paradise echoes so much of Ms. Patti Labelle's If You Ask Me To. Come on, the beat is identical (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfZqXLnBYb4)
Genesis-Mama is much more worse than Land of Confusion, though winner goes to That's All! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_OI7WJ0hI4)
Abba- Super Trouper or any of Abba's cheesy poppy 80s songs.
MickeyMac 02-09-2009, 04:10 PM Kokomo- The Beach Boys puke:
Also put me down as another person who is not into U2 much.

Oh man! I LOVE that song!
It makes me want to go on a carribean vacation - same with the old Club Med "Hands Up". I like those upbeat, lighthearted songs - great for vacations, like Madonna's "Holiday".
Good - you're in my "I Don't Get U2" club though! ;)
TripperFan 02-09-2009, 05:27 PM You can mark me down as the third person who doesn't like U2. I've never understood the appeal of REM either.
Yep - that's another one: REM and, for me, Prince. I still think he's really gay (not that that matters) but I don't get how other artists think he's the best thing since the Beatles ????????????????????????????
I thought it was a chick singing "When Doves Fly" (or whatever it's called). And then the whole garbage with the name change to a freakin symbol!!! (How 'bout I change my name to "#")? And then back again.
Like P. Diddy, Snuff Daddy or whatever he calls himself this week - they tend to lose credibility when they're still sorting out who the hell they are to themselves!!
Cactus Jack 02-09-2009, 06:34 PM I like REM LOL Another horrible 80s song* A Little Respect-Erasure, so awful LOLHas anyone seen the Scrubs episode where the surgeon whos obsessed with that song plays it in the surgery room and the patient, right before getting the mask thing put on him goes "I hate that song"* LOL
Cactus Jack 02-09-2009, 06:35 PM I like Prince and U2 too
MickeyMac 02-09-2009, 10:05 PM I can do without REM myself, but I like Prince especially his early stuff.
ekkostar 02-09-2009, 10:10 PM I'm glad that Addicted to Love isn't on this list or you may see me in rage mode.

Snuff Daddy.
And it was Cry, not Fly. lol Though either way it really wouldn't have mattered...like 4 people saw Purple Rain.

I like that one. Though in one of their music videos they were like flying around or something...that was odd.
But gay and the 80s was happenin man. :D
catlover79 02-10-2009, 12:18 AM Snuff Daddy.

Genesis-Mama is much more worse than Land of Confusion, though winner goes to That's All!
Land of Confusion was a great song and video
Mama wasn't bad and That's All was also good.
If you really want to see some Genesis dreck then I suggest Illegal Alien (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqQv3qef21A) and Paperlate puke: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uC0Z5AStDWY)

I also think U2 is boring as hell.
88survivor 02-10-2009, 03:35 PM I forgotten about this band.......Katrina and The Waves- I'm Walking On Sunshine...smack someone who says they are walking on sunshine. This song is not pleasant, it is just one of those better than the rest of you guys because I am preppy all the time. Who wrote the lyrics to that song? One of the most grating songs from 1985. Give this song to prisoners or those convicted of felony......now that's torture.
Katrina and The Wave- I'm Walking On Sunshine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eONhto0x_nI)
Laura Branigan- Gloria (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9jErLwLX2I) Love Laura and her voice outshines as usual, but this was not one of her better songs. I mean, Gloria just killed herself by having her name mentioned more than once. Or it is probably a mad woman who is haunting Gloria in her dreams...who knows...

props: Yes! this is my number 1 most despised song of the 80's and for many of the reasons you mentioned.
MickeyMac 02-10-2009, 08:48 PM I cant stand that song "Walking On Sunshine" why was that a hit.
As for Genesis, no thanks :thumbsdow :thumbsdow :thumbsdow
88survivor 02-11-2009, 03:50 PM Another supposed dance-crazed song that was suppose to catch on, but never did thankfully, saved for the Super Mario Bros movie scene with Bob Hoskins and Big Bertha from 1993...
Was(Not Was)- Walk The Dinosaur (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyef-BItce8)

MrCleveland 02-11-2009, 05:40 PM "We Built This City" by Starship, most definitely!
dawsongirl 02-12-2009, 12:11 AM Another supposed dance-crazed song that was suppose to catch on, but never did thankfully, saved for the Super Mario Bros movie scene with Bob Hoskins and Big Bertha from 1993...
Was(Not Was)- Walk The Dinosaur (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyef-BItce8)
Open the door, get on the floor, everybody walk the dinosaur!!!
88survivor 02-12-2009, 12:13 AM That's when Grace Slick and Co. went commercial pop with their band. It was no longer a psychedelic band, but rather a 80s pop rock band. But then again, it went through changes with original members and such, so it is understandable.

Well said, but I still enjoy "Sara" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now". Sure it was cheese, but it was tasty cheese.

Race's Girl 02-16-2009, 11:44 AM I never really liked Flashdance or At this Moment, though.
I hate that song as well as Fame, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, West End Girls and Mickey

The Stevie Wonder track is especially disapointing considering all the great work he did previously to that.

I might have to duck a few times, but I never liked one single thing Wham! or George Michael did. puke:
And I too hate "We Built This City" by Starship with a passion. Around the time it was a hit (mid-80's) one local radio station inserted a promotion jingle into the beginning of the song while it was playing. Talk about cheesy.

hard to believe that they were once Jefferson Airplane.
Schmoopie 05-11-2009, 03:37 AM My favorites on this list are in blue and my least favorites are in red
1. Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes (1980)
2. The One That You Love - Air Supply (1981)
3. Truly - Lionel Richie (1982)
4. Flashdance...What A Feeling - Irene Cara (1983)
5. Let's Hear It For The Boy - Deniece Williams (1984)
6. We Built This City - Starship (1985)
7. The Next Time I Fall - Peter Cetera (1986)
8. At This Moment - Billy Vera (1987)
9. Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison (1988)
10. Milli Vanilli - Girl I'm Gonna Miss You (1989)
I'm sorry but I cannot stand that song "At This Moment". I've never been sure why, but it's probably my least favorite song of all. I find it way too slow and very boring.
However, I LOVE that "Pina Colada" song and the Peter Cetera song. I love him and I love the duet he does with Amy Grant.
I think what makes a song unappealing to me is the slowness of it. Some songs just seem to drag and aren't "catchy", but that's just me.

Me too! I was on a dance team/pep squad in the 9th grade and we did a pom pom routine to "Eye of the Tiger". God that was SOOOOO long ago and I still remember how it goes! How sad is that?!!!!
I love Sussudio as well! Phil Collins is awesome!
