I was able to see most of the segment. Nothing new that I noticed but they said something to the effect that the parents were on their way to a reunion so maybe even today they'll be able to see their kids. That would be great!

It was kind of a bust. Nothing new. They did show some pictures of the kids that looked like they were ripped from UM (one had the marble background). I was wondering if there was going to be an interview with the Baskins but no such luck.

So it was just a segment about it? Were the Baskins on it at all? I looked on the Today Show website but I haven't found a video link yet for it.

to the right at the top of the page. They actually show and talk to their parents. I'm so elated that these children have been found. You know they have to be reeling from this, I can't wait until we hear what all happened.

I think we should all keeps our eyes and ears open to any other news shows they'll be one and post them here. I'm hoping Dateline will do an hour long special about the case in the near future.

If I'm doing this right, this (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/29030597#29030597) should be a link to the actual video.

LOL they really did piggyback off the UM segment there and still got a number of things wrong. Those composites are several years old (not weeks old as TODAY claimed) and there is no chance in hell that Marvin Maples is seventeen years old.

Yeah, I had to do a double take on the Tivo when she said he was 17

That would be awesome. I'd love to see that. It would be a way of putting all the pieces together as to what happened when.

I can't watch this video at school so I'll have to wait until I get home.

This page has a news story plus 2 video links about the case:

Both Marvin Maple's bartender and his neighbor say the same thing--"He must have had a good reason for doing what he did." While I can appreciate the bewildered state someone would be in upon finding out that a guy you knew for so long and thought was harmless was accused of something like this, I hope that they are able to get the full facts of the case before they automatically take his side.

It appears that the Baskins are flying out to California today to reunite with their children. Here's hoping it goes as smoothly as possible.

The headline makes it sound like the reunion has already happened. Then later says that they aren't sure if the baskin's will see the "kids". Then it says the kids were abducted in 1978.

I think I'll wait too, to see what REALLY happens.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who heard her say that Marvin was 17 yrs old! lol I was like... huh?!

Seems like news people are jumping the gun here and trying to get the story out that they're making mistakes here and there. They should really get their story straight before they say or post stuff.

Mystery Lover, the reason I said they appeared to be going to California is because not only does the story indicate it, but the video segment shows the Baskins getting into a car--I took that to mean they were driving to the airport in the early morning hours. Perhaps I was mistaken.

I agree with those who say that contradictory accounts and stories are cropping up due to what appears to be oversight or rushedness (though I think the anchor who said Marvin Maple is 17 simply misread the teleprompter). I will hold off on posting anything else unless I think it's truly offering new information, and I'll try to maintain a skeptic's eye.

Duece... when I wrote what I wrote about jumping the gun and posting stuff I didn't mean us here. I meant the news articles and the tv people. Thats where I'm hearing and seeing the mistakes. Seems like us here on the boards know more than the reporters! lol Sorry if it seemed like I was talking about someone on here.

Don't hold off on posting anything. I for one would like to hear what anyone has to say. :-) You've been VERY informulated to us!! Keep the links and stuff coming. I've checked out everything that you've posted! And I appreciate it all!

ML, appreciate the dap. I did maybe misunderstand a bit, either way it's perhaps valid.

I'll probably maintain a low profile for the next day or two. Classwork + possible sickness coming on play a part in that.

I think a lot of the information is out there now, and over the next 48 hours it'll sort itself out, especially since it's been on a national news program. I'm hoping to hear mostly good things.

Well if he was able to disguise himself as a seventeen year old it would explain how he stayed hidden for so long  - Heck after Elizabeth Carmichael I'll believe almost anything.

I'm not surprised that Marvin's buddies down at the cafe or from his complex are siding with him. Personally I never thought either Marvin or his late wife Sandra Maples were a danger to society and that is what made this search take twenty years to bring to a conclusion. Its been stated many times over that Marvin and Sandra are the type of people who can move into a community, put down roots in a community and establish relationships within that community all the time mantaining this total farce that they have been perpetrating on their friends, neighbors and of course their grandchildren.

Marvin Maples may have been a very nice guy to many different people. But those of us who have followed the case for the past twenty years including the authorities have reason to believe that Marvin Maples is also a criminal by virtue that he kidnapped his grandchildren and probably a danger to them as well as its obvious that some degree of distortion of the facts have been done on the part of Marvin Maples so that his children no longer remember their parents.

So no I'm not surprised at all that Marvin's buddies think he's a great guy and I guess the only thing you can say in Marvin's defense is if he is every bit of the stand up character his supporters profess him to be and his intentions as to what he did in regards to this case are as honorable as they seem to think they are then the wheels of justice will spin his way and he will be exonerated.

The local 11:00 news, without using the Maple or Baskin names, showed the Baskins arriving at the airport in California. Mr. Baskin said he didn't know if his children would want to meet with them, but they wanted to be there to show their support of reconciliation and healing. Mrs. Baskin came across just as sweet as in the Unsolved Mysteries segment, tearing up as she said what a "blessing" it was to see her children's pictures and how she never stopped loving them. It's hard to imagine any reason or excuse for depriving two such wonderful parents of their children, particularly when you look at some of the dipwads allowed to keep their kids! And with no legal grounds whatsoever, as they doubtless knew they wouldn't have a leg to stand on in attempting to smear the Baskins! The report did give Marvin's age, which was young for a grandfather of children that age but considerably over 17! He was in court today...hopefully getting the book thrown at him! :smash:
