View Full Version : Once Great Cable Channels That Have Gone Downhill
*AMC post 2001, when they started becoming more of a "general movies" channel (hell, they once played "Catwoman" for Christ's sake) instead of a classic film channel. It was also around this period, that they became an advertiser-supported network (which as result, meant that the movies had to be edited for objectionable content).
*BET some time after Viacom took over
*Cartoon Network whenever they started showing live-action stuff
*Disney Channel post 2002, when they stopped being a general audience channel (hence, the elimination of "Vault Disney") in favor of tween fare (which also came at the expense of animation)
*ESPN sometime after Disney took over
*ESPN Classic post 2004, when it became awfully apparent that they weren't trying anymore
*G4 shortly after Neal Tiles became the president of the network
*MTV post 1997
*Nickelodeon post 1999
*TV Land whenever they started showing current reality shows (e.g. "Extreme Makeover") and movies (when the channel should be devoted to classic TV programming)
*VH1 post 2001 (when they started relying too much on pop culture nostalgia like "Best Week Ever" and the "I Love the..." series and crummy reality shows)
ekkostar 02-05-2009, 08:53 AM Disney Channel and Nickelodeon aren't bad, just because you grew up and are no longer their demographic does not mean they now suck. Stop wearing the nostalgia goggles.
browneyes106 02-05-2009, 10:20 AM The Disney Channel original movies used to be really good. Another cable channel that has gone downhill is CMT which is owned my MTV.
Penny Lane 02-05-2009, 10:57 AM TVLand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
brownie87 02-05-2009, 11:05 AM TV Land, because it went from showing great classic TV shows to showing nothing but crappy reality shows, movies, "Scrubs", '90s shows and the only "classic" shows they show are shows from the '50s. GET A CLUE, TV LAND!!!!!

Yeah...MTV circa-1997 with the arrival of TRL!!! More like "T and A"RL thanks to Britney Spears and The Spice Girls!!! Actually, MTV started sucking hardcore around 1992 with the arrival of "The Real World". Now, all MTV seems to show are either tweeniebopper videos, or pointless reality shows. I even miss "Celebrity Deathmatch". Then VH1 started with all the stupid reality TV crap and eventually got worse than MTV with shows like "The Surreal Life", "Flava/Rock of Love", "Celebrity Rehab", "Celebrity Fit Club", "My Fair Brady", "Scott Baio: 46 and Pregnant (and P-Whipped)", "Tool Academy", la-la, all these dumba$$ reality programs. Then all these crappy pop culture-obsessed shows like "Best Week Ever", "The Fabulous Life", "Celebrity Eye Candy", "All-Access"...OYE!!! Now, VH1 Classic is starting to fall into the same trap, showing nothing but movies, Metal-oriented crap, "Rock Star" infommercials...ARGH!!! What can't they just show music videos and music-related shows anymore???
MickeyMac 02-05-2009, 06:49 PM TV Land, because it went from showing great classic TV shows to showing nothing but crappy reality shows, movies, "Scrubs", '90s shows and the only "classic" shows they show are shows from the '50s. GET A CLUE, TV LAND!!!!!
I couldnt have said it better myself.
I would also include American Movie Classics. They have abandoned their classic format as well and the furthest they go back with their movies is the 1980's.
I couldnt have said it better myself.
I would also include American Movie Classics. They have abandoned their classic format as well and the furthest they go back with their movies is the 1980's.
I've already mentioned AMC at the top of my first post.
MrCleveland 02-06-2009, 10:31 AM The Family Channel When it became Fox Family.
Toon Disney When it eliminated all the 80's cartoons.
Boomerang When it played 90's cartoons.
What SHOULD happen...
The Disney Channel should make a Classic Channel like Boomerang.
Boomerang should keep their old shows and CN should make a Cartoon Cartoons Channel.
TV Land should make a Retro Station.
VH1 and MTV should make a video station.
Nickelodeon should get on the ball and launch NickRewind.
TV ****ed with our shows...they should NEVER **** with our stations!
Doodyville10019 02-06-2009, 12:37 PM I agree - MTV should just go back to being a strictly music video channel - PERIOD (or at least revamp TRL). Same with VH1. They should have a separate channel dedicated to just their reality shows (like Fox Reality).
catlover79 02-06-2009, 12:43 PM I agree with all of them. BOOOOO!!!
MickeyMac 02-06-2009, 01:07 PM I've already mentioned AMC at the top of my first post.
Must have missed it, sorry :)
MickeyMac 02-06-2009, 01:08 PM *BET some time after Viacom took over
I have to admit I have never been a fan of this channel. My buddy says BET stands for "you bet your ass I aint watching this". I'm inclined to agree with him.
dawsongirl 02-06-2009, 05:38 PM I nominate all of them.
megamanj2004 02-07-2009, 12:19 PM In one way or another, cable channels are eventually gonna sell out and down Crapper Avenue.
But here's some others in my list you could mention:
GSN (formerly known as Game Show Network) - When they started picking up all those Million Dollar Game Shows, starting w/ Millionaire in 2002. But that's step one of its evolution into the Crapper Zone.
It got really worse in March 2004 w/:
- The brand name change from Game Show Network to GSN
- Overplaying their promos into Annoyance-ville, especially during the closing credits, and speaking of them....
- They crunched the closing credits to the point where you can't see them anymore and it got even worser there in Summer 2005 when they would only play 30 seconds of the closing credits (in Crunched Mode) and cut to the next show without them even getting a chance to finish.
- They brought in those horrific Reality Shows and Poker Shows that had no business on the network. Luckily, they ditched the reality shows after awhile, but those lame Poker Shows are still there! BOOOOO!
At least once Rich Cronin left GSN in 2007, some of GSN became a part of the old Game Show Network again...but still:
- There are annoying credit crunches
- And them overkilling people's ears and eyes with their promos
- And they still sometimes speed-up the shows on Alvin Speed.
- And too many acquisitions of Modern Game Shows, instead of classics.
megamanj2004 02-07-2009, 12:27 PM Others:
Any Viacom-owned channel will automatically go down Crapper Avenue.
EX's:
TV Land - thanks to Viacom's pressuring them into bringing them the $$$, that's why we have all those horrific reality shows that have no business on the channel
MTV - even though they've long stopped catering to playing music or let alone play music as much as they've used to, they did have some good shows like Beavis and Butt-Head, Daria, and Celebrity Deathmatch. But once 2002 or so rolled into town, MTV really got worse and worse with all those stupid spoiled, teeny-bopper shows like Sweet 16, Yo Mama! (when are they gonna realize Mama Jokes are too old now?!), etc.
VH1 - Is like MTV, but twice as bad. Waaaaaay too many horrific reality shows just so a bunch of dingbat knuckleheads crying about going on their stupid dating shows and crying about getting dumped and blah, BLAH, BLAAAAAAAH and wash-up has-beens to get their glory on 15 minutes of fame.
catlover79 02-07-2009, 12:35 PM ^ I'm guessing you're not a Viacom fan. ;)
Chocoholic 02-07-2009, 12:38 PM Another one is USA. They used to show a variety of different shows and movies. Now all they seem to have is crime shows and House.

I agree w/ you both on TV Land & GSN. GSN was much better 10 yrs ago when I first saw it, and it had B&W Sunday Night and would also occasionally show classics like the only existing eps of shows like Personality & Eye Guess. It has gotten better since the bad old days a few years ago when it was showing Star Search and Amazing Race. Fortunately for fans like me, Amazing Race reruns tanked in the ratings, and GSN had to dump the reruns into its B&W Overnight hour to burn them off. Now B&W Overnight is back 7 nights a week.
I really hate most of the changes in TV Land as well. If I want to see movies, I'll watch TMC. Also I hate how GSN doesn't even bother to run crunched down credits anymore, retyping them into tiny credits so it can take up more screen space w/ promos for its latest crappy reality show! At least Good-Life TV still shows a few real classics!
megamanj2004 02-07-2009, 07:35 PM Another one is USA. They used to show a variety of different shows and movies. Now all they seem to have is crime shows and House.
And on top of that, most of their shows that used to be on their channel are now leftover scraps sent on the Slueth Channel as of January '09.
And speaking of Slueth...
Sleuth jumped this past January, maybe a little bit before that.
This year for a fact, when they axed all of their classic '70s and '80s and even '90s dramas in favor of picking up a chunk of USA's leftover scraps of their shows (ex's: Monk, Walker, Texas Ranger, House, etc.)
catlover79 02-07-2009, 07:38 PM USA is the only cable channel that I remember showing reruns of Just the Ten of Us. Those were the days. ohno:
megamanj2004 02-07-2009, 07:39 PM ^ I'm guessing you're not a Viacom fan. ;)
Not as long as that callus butt-hole Sumner Redstone and his new puppet Phillipe Dauman are running the company. ;)
megamanj2004 02-07-2009, 07:42 PM USA is the only cable channel that I remember showing reruns of Just the Ten of Us. Those were the days. ohno:
And that they had some great lineups of game shows, too! :)
And they didn't have to play games and screw people from seeing certain game shows like GSN does. ohno:
steevo 02-07-2009, 10:24 PM What I used to love about TV Land was the fact that they showed old classic commercials along with the classic programming. Nowadays, it's too cluttered with 90's programming and reality TV (like we need more of that  ) as mentioned elsewhere on this thread. Another unforgivable thing they have recently done was to begin running infomercials (infomercials!) in the early morning hours, replacing Star Trek, of all things.
To me, that's SACRELIGE, I tell ya!
I hardly watch Sci-Fi anymore either. Other than Galactica, it's mostly crappy horror movies.

If TV Land wants to air movies, they should only air those that are based on classic TV shows. On the contrary, they should also air a film and then the TV show based on said film back to back in a four hour block.
jimpickens 02-08-2009, 06:16 AM USA only thing keeping it afloat is wrestling
SPIKE when CBS took over it started to go downhill see USA comment
SC FI
HBO and SHOWTIME use to be about movies concerts and sporting events now it's mostly crappy TV shows
TBS boy has that station gone downhill over the past 8years
TNT same as TBS
wkomorow 02-08-2009, 12:01 PM UniHD used to have Northern Exposure, Enterprise, Odyssey Five. Green used to have a number of good original series. Now it is mostly repeats.
Yeldarb 02-08-2009, 01:53 PM Safe to say, cable television in general has become a programming wasteland.
Nickelodeon: After about 1998, when most of their game shows and Nickcoms were already disappearing, and when some of their newest Nicktoons were getting lame.
Nicktoons TV: When they stopped airing the "older" Nicktoons (which I thought was the whole purpose of this channel as Nick continued airing newer shows), and began making their own.
Boomerang: When they stopped airing Looney Tunes too.
Cartoon Network: 2004-05, when they removed Looney Tunes from their schedule, and began airing live-action programs.
The Disney Channel: 2001-02, when "Zoog Disney" took over. No longer "America's Family Network", as it now caters strictly to tweens.
Prevue Channel: When it became the TVGuide Channel, and they got rid of all that cool interstitial music.
MTV: 2003, After they cancelled Clone High and stopped airing Daria and Celebrity Deathmatch.
repeatshistory 02-08-2009, 05:35 PM I hardly watch Sci-Fi anymore either. Other than Galactica, it's mostly crappy horror movies.
I haven't watched Sci-Fi Channel since they cancelled Farscape in favor of the cheaper and crappier Starcrap SG-1.
repeatshistory 02-08-2009, 05:37 PM USA only thing keeping it afloat is wrestling
This is the one network that I don't necessarily agree with all of you on. USA has some terrific new original series, like Burn Notice and Psych. Even Monk is ok, though perhaps a bit long in the tooth at this point.
Although, I will admit, I miss Rhonda Shear and USA Up All Night....
repeatshistory 02-08-2009, 05:49 PM Also, while I wholeheartedly agree with you all that AMC has gone drastically downhill in the past few years, in their defense on showing movies from the 60s through the 90s: When Ted Turner bought the MGM/UA film library and started TCM, it damaged AMC's ability to acquire the licensing to show those films, and then Turner sold out to Warner Brothers, thereby getting the ENTIRE Warner film library, virtually crippling AMC's ability to get older movies, especially classics like Casablanca (Warner Brothers). Faced with this debilitating blow, AMC was forced to find 'new classics' like some of the Steve McQueen movies from the 70s, etc.
However, one of the biggest mistakes I think AMC ever made was cancelling Remember WENN, their FIRST Emmy award winning original series. Listening to them tout Mad Men as their first foray into 'cinematic, award-winning television' (a paraphrase from the president of AMC's interview with Entertainment Weekly earlier this year) makes my stomach hurt. They have VERY short memories, and that's part of why they went downhill.
catlover79 02-08-2009, 05:56 PM ^ I never knew all that. I still remember watching AMC at Grandma's house...Laurel & Hardy, Orchestra Wives, Sun Valley Serenade, This Property is Condemned, Love Story, Midnight Lace...*SIGH* Those were the days!!!!
MickeyMac 02-08-2009, 06:05 PM I forgot about Sci Fi. They used to show Dark Shadow, Time Tunnel, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, Lost In Space.
Those were the days.
howierules86 02-08-2009, 08:48 PM Besides the ones already mentioned...
BBC America - Where have all the Britcoms gone? Seriously? I do admit I like to watch UK Gladiators, though.
icecream 02-08-2009, 11:38 PM I hardly watch Sci-Fi anymore either. Other than Galactica, it's mostly crappy horror movies. :rolleyes:Do you like Early Edition? It's coming to Sci-Fi weekdays at 4PM starting March 9. my favorite show of all time. Plus Sci-Fi aired a wonderful Mork and Mindy marathon Thanksgiving weekend. So it's not all horror movies.

But let's not forget that they're airing a frickin' wrestling show from the WWE department.
Now why on god's green earth would Sci-Fi put the current ECW (it's a WWE entity) on their channel, when it's supposed to be mostly Sci-Fi things!
Not Sci-Fi...Wrestling!
catlover79 02-09-2009, 12:21 AM WWE & Sci Fi?? Who's running the store there??

Although, I will admit, I miss Rhonda Shear and USA Up All Night....
Even so, USA managed to lose wrestling to Spike TV (or TNN at the time) from 2000-2005. I also miss the "USA Cartoon Express" by the way.:p
jimpickens 02-09-2009, 04:02 AM The WWE moved to TNN/SPIKE in 2000 Due to USA at the time wanting Vince to tone down some of the racier content they had on their programing at the time ( this was during the anything goes attitude era of the WWE ) so Vince McMahon decided to leave USA and during that five year stint USA's rating were at its lowest and never went up until 2005 when the WWE left SPIKE and returned to USA after all there is just so much of Law And Order and Walker Texas Ranger that one can watch without wanting to smash ones TV set.
Goldilocks 02-09-2009, 12:10 PM Another one is USA. They used to show a variety of different shows and movies. Now all they seem to have is crime shows and House.
I know! It seems everytime I turn it to USA, "House" is on. Geez! How many marathons of this can they show?!
Another cable network I haven't seen mentioned that's seriously gone downhill is A&E. They used to show those wonderful biographies and critically acclaimed dramas (Law and Order, MI-5, Third Watch) and great movies. Now, as with everyone else, they joined the rest of the sheep in the reality herd! Oh wait, they do show CSI-Miami umpteen times per day.
megamanj2004 02-09-2009, 03:38 PM E! - Jumped when someone deicded to make into another gossip tabloid channel. Even their E! - True Hollywood Stories suck now as well. The E! THS shows used to be about a variety of people and even great TV shows. Nowadays, if they do air an E! THS story, majority of the time it's about one of today's spoiled celebs like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Kim Kardashian, etc. And other times it's just a straight trashy tabloid marathon of sorts.

"The Soup" is pretty much the only show on E! these days worth watching.
browneyes106 02-10-2009, 02:19 AM I agree with a few of you about AMC. Sometime back they played the Halloween Resurecction movie.
Tubehead 02-10-2009, 10:29 PM tv land went crazy after they started airing reality show. they have high shcool rueion, she got the look and family forman. who cares? pluse they took away i love lucy. then they have marthron of the cobsyshows. they also air extream makeove and keep showing moives thats on other staition. i stoped watching tv land two months ago.
cartoon netwrok. onlyshow i liked that they aired were goessbumps. thats was the only show. one time i turned in and it was batman with michrel kenton. i can't stand some of the shows. i tryed watching Johhny test it was ok show. i never cared to watched the other shows .
steevo 02-10-2009, 11:21 PM I haven't watched Sci-Fi Channel since they cancelled Farscape in favor of the cheaper and crappier Starcrap SG-1.

No actually I have never seen a complete episode of Early Edition, but it's premise does look intriguing, so I will have to check it out. Thanks for the heads-up.
What I miss seeing on Sci-Fi though are the classic shows like Lost In Space, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, Dark Shadows, and The Six Million Dollar Man.
treky 02-11-2009, 01:54 AM well, besides TV LAND and NICK AT NITE of course (I won't talk about them; since there's been LOTS of posts bashing them). there's AMC.
comedyfreak 02-11-2009, 06:29 AM *AMC post 2001, when they started becoming more of a "general movies" channel (hell, they once played "Catwoman" for Christ's sake) instead of a classic film channel. AMC-They started showing commercials TCM is way better than AMC.
Cartoon Network when they stopped showing classic cartoons. Now they're showing movies like TVland does.
I don't like TVland's original programming or movies. They also show programs that are really not considered classics.
Goldilocks 02-11-2009, 12:07 PM "The Soup" is pretty much the only show on E! these days worth watching.
Amen to that!
Zebra 3 02-12-2009, 01:36 AM Safe to say, cable television in general has become a programming wasteland.
I'll go as far to say today's TV in general is mostly crap.
TV Land site: The evildoers have recently geo-blocked their online eps. to everyone outside the US.
Spike TV: Used to watch about eight years ago when it was called TNN. Back then there was no spammy TV network incrustations at the bottom right of the screen and aired Starsky & Hutch (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=556) eps. twice daily! Then the evildoers went spam crazy with their infamous black bar. Now Spike TV is suppose to be a TV network for men, yet the movies are censored and there's absolutely no swearing or spitting allowed.

Great article! They said what I mentioned in my earlier post:
"Today A&E should be called the CSI: Miami channel, airing re-runs of the show with frightening regularity, culminating with occasional weekly marathons of the show that last entire days. The worst part is, these 24 hour marathons consist of the same 3 or 4 episodes airing in a loop, all day long. The few times the channel isn't airing CSI Miami, it's airing one of the 5 following shows: The First 48, Crossing Jordan, American Justice, Dog The Bounty Hunter or Cold Case Files."
MikeLutton 02-12-2009, 03:02 PM hd does got the crime investating channell old crime shows on there once n while swat kind like true tv but does got some good shows it on direct tv
right now wgn my fav channell hope it stays that way
Heidi Dawn 02-13-2009, 05:32 PM TNN (now SpikeTV) was a lot better when it was a country music station that aired reruns of 'Dallas', 'The Dukes of Hazzard', and 'The Waltons'.
In Canada, we had a channel called Prime (now TVTropolis). Prime had all the classic sitcoms: MASH, Three's Company, McHale's Navy, Hogan's Heroes, All In The Family, Petticoat Junction, The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Taxi, Bewitched, I Dream Of Jeannie, and Who's The Boss. When they changed it to TVTropolis, they took all the good classic shows off and put on all the shows that I think is garbage: Seinfeld, The Nanny, Fraiser, Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, Family Guy, and any other show made after 1989. The only shows worth watching on this channel are the documentary shows like: Whatever Happened To, TV Tales, Fanatical, etc.
MikeLutton 02-13-2009, 06:06 PM no channell is safe anymore it sad wwor was also good back in the day bunch of reruns now everything is dvd or on hulu so sad anyone see my tv schedule
i made up that way a tv line up schould be n use to be anyone want see might bring back some memories
megamanj2004 02-14-2009, 04:53 AM Just goes to show once too many of these corporate tycoons started getting involved, cable TV has become a Corporate War Zone for TV.

catlover79 02-14-2009, 05:23 AM Here's a perfect article that I just found concerning this subject:

Thanks for sharing that article; it makes some EXCELLENT points!!
storrs19 02-14-2009, 01:28 PM All of them except for Fox Movie Channel, Turner Classic Movies, History International, The Science Channel. I can remember having too much to watch. Now I have 200 channels and nothing on any of them. Except for a few of the same old tired shows if it is pre circa-1992 forget seeing it anywhere. There are just too many channels to list that have gone down the dumper.
catlover79 02-14-2009, 01:40 PM ^ Reminds me of the Bruce Springsteen song, "57 Channels (And Nothin' On)". It's probably the most honest song he's ever recorded.
barne1962 08-14-2009, 10:02 AM What about Hallmark channel they have gone down hill to with all of the Golden Girl,MASH,Touch by an angle. They have these shows on to much.

I know,i mean the airings are really getting excessive as of late.
Retro4Life 08-14-2009, 10:36 PM I've been terribly disappointed in AMC, Sy Fy (!), USA, and Cartoon Network in the last couple of years.
Oh, and TVLand, too. They might as well just come clean and admit they don't really consider themselves a "classic TV" outlet anymore.

USA is EXCELLENT these days. I love In Plain Sight, and Royal Pains. Plus they have the biggest cable hit, Burn Notice. USA even had their highest rated week last week! I don't call that downhill.
I do agree with Cartoon Network though.
spunkygirl 08-14-2009, 10:46 PM SOAPnet-The channel created for soaps, now airs movies that have NOTHING to do with Soaps and not to mention all the stupid reality shows they air
MTV, VH1

I'll take your word for it, I admit I haven't tuned into to anything from USA in quite a while.
I guess I just miss the homey goofiness of old stuff like Commander USA's Groovy Movies and USA Up All Night, not to mention the incredible Night Flight.
