SEOUL (AFP) – A dogged South Korean grandmother has failed her driving test 771 times, police said Thursday, but a local newspaper reported she will keep trying.

The 68-year-old, identified only by her last name Cha, has taken the test almost every working day since 2005 in the southwestern city of Jeonju. She failed again Monday for the 771st time.

"It was a record-breaking number here," Choi Yong-Cheol, a police sergeant supervising the test in the city's Deokjingu district, told AFP.

"I wonder if she will try it again for a 772nd time."

The Korea Times said Cha will in fact be back for another attempt.

Choi said that Cha cannot pass the preliminary written section of the test, averaging scores of 30-50 whereas the pass mark is 60 out of 100.

Local media said that Cha sells food and household items door to door at apartment complexes, carrying the items in a handcart, but wants to get a car for her business.

Police estimate she has spent almost five million won (3,600 dollars) to take the written test, with each test costing 6,000 won in addition to other expenses.

"I feel sorry every time I see Cha fail. When she passes, I'll make a commemorative tablet myself and give it to her," one officer was quoted as saying.

Now I don't feel so bad after failing three times (I got my license on the fourth try). You have to hand it to her for not giving up!!

I got my license on the 2nd try. I blew the parallel parking the first time.(two wheels on the sidewalk - oops!!) But I'm sure I would have given up long before 771 attempts had it taken that many!!!

Well, it's a good thing she's not in North Korea otherwise Kim-Jong il would have had her head after failing the 1st time.

I know Paul (MrCleveland) was bummed out about not passing his driver's test for a long time (he finally got his license last week). I can't wait to hear his reaction to this story.

wouldn't it have been cheaper for her to take a driver's ed class that will help her study and pass the test?

...unless she actually is going for the record.

Just read this on Yahoo news:

SEOUL, Feb 21 – A South Korean woman who has failed the driver's exam 775 times is not about give up on her hope of buying a truck one day to go into her own business, whether other drivers want her on the road or not.

Cha Sa-soon, 68, has been trying since 2005 to pass the written portion of the test to get a licence, but she has so far failed to get the 60 percent required to clear it.

"I've looked up some guidebooks to get a driver's licence, and they were saying it takes at most five years to get this," Cha said in North Jeolla province, where farmers on tractors or cows can be just as common on country roads as motor vehicles.

"It's already been four years, so I might pass the test next time. That's what I hope for."

Driving schools in South Korea offer courses to enable applicants to walk away with a licence in a week. Cha has not been fortunate enough to set foot in such a class, which tends to congregate more in busy metropolitan areas, but she remains unfazed, even after having spent more than 10 million won ($6,800) on test applications.

"I believe you can achieve your goal if you persistently pursue it," she says. "So don't give up your dream, like me. Be strong and do your best."

Yeah, I totally agree with you on that one.

I took my written test the first time and passed.

But uh, I haven't had much practice as to driving so I have to renew the learner's permit..

BTW, I passed the test a few years ago then took a two hour course in the driving. I didn't like the guy showing me because half the time he was on the cell phone. Someone called him.

I didn't ask any questions but he did ask me if I did practice, which I didn't. My mom is too nervous to have me practice with her in the car.
